Lonely Planet Boston Encounter ReviewThe LP Boston guide is fine. It's encyclopedic in nature with all the detail you'll ever need ... and more. Everything in it is accurate and quite interesting, and the restaurant suggestions are all quite good. It's clearly written by people who know and love the city. But, and here's the reason for my 3-star rating, I find it a bit overwhelming and without a sense of prioritization. If you know the city already, hey, the extra stuff is a bonus. But if you're visiting and not intending on becoming a scholar on Beantown, I'm not sure you need everything in this book. And it's hard to sift through what you need to know and what you don't. So bottom line: if you are looking for more of a reference-type guide book on Boston, this one's for you. If you're looking for a single-volume I'm-going-to-take-it-with-me-everywhere book to bring while visiting Boston, I'd look at Frommer's or Michelin first.Lonely Planet Boston Encounter Overview

Fodor's New England, 28th Edition (Travel Guide) ReviewI took this 28th Edition with me on my August 10-day tour through Boston, New Hampshire & Maine. I also had with me: Frommer'sVermont, New Hampshire and Maine, However, hands down, Fodor's is the better of the two.
Do note, that both Fodor's and Frommer's target those who have some jingle in their pockets. Thus, if you are a student/backpacker/struggling worker/stock trader who specialized in Bear Stearns, you might want to consider getting Lonely Planet 2008. In Fodor's you will find very few restaurants (under $20) and fewer accommodations (under $80).
This guide starts out with Boston, the jewel of New England's cities. There is an ample seventy plus pages to get you around this great city. As the guide states, "bring your walking shoes," for much of Boston exists to be explored by foot. Throughout Fodor's when you see a "Fodor's Choice" next to a restaurant, hotel or site, do yourself a favor and take time to imbibe.I found Fodor's recommendations in New Hampshire and Maine to be "right on" and the writing was as informative as it was engaging.

Where this guide falters is with its maps (or lack of). There are no city maps for many of the most important cities. In fact outside of the four cities of Boston, Concord, Providence, Newport and Portland, there are no other city maps. This means you are on your own, and most of the time it is not easy find where the restaurants, hotels and sites are. It baffles me why would a quality guide skimp on something as important as maps? Duh.
Wait, the worse blunder is the total absence of anything that can help you understand the culture, customs, the people and politics of New England. AND, there is NO mention of history! I mean, New England does have a serious history, right Fodor's?I mean, does the birthplace of the nation ring a bell?
Wow this could have been a five star guide if they (editors/writer) coulda/woulda done it right. But, even with these significant shortcomings Fodor's still is a useful and reliable guide. Strongly recommendedFodor's New England, 28th Edition (Travel Guide) Overview

The roots of settlement in Maine may go back to the earliest days of European exploration in North America, but the coastline itself is the star here. From the expansive beaches south of Portland to the shopping mecca of L.L. Bean in Freeport to the magnificently rocky Acadia National Park to the remote towns and villages by the Canadian border, Coastal Maine has much to entertain.
This Moon Handback is a useful mixture of maps, photographs, travel narrative and practical information. Nangle divides the coastline into seven segments: The Southern Coast, Greater Portland, Mid-Coast Region, Penobscot Bay, Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle, Acadia Region, and the Down East Coast. In each segment, she explores the tourist highlights, entertainment possibilities, shopping, accomodations, and dining. Sidebar items address unusual features such as the tremendous tidal range in Eastern Maine or the unique accent of Downeast Mainers. The guide comes in a compact and easy to use format and includes lists of useful websites for further research.
"Moon Handbooks Coastal Maine" is very highly recommended as a planning and traveling resource for those headed for Downeast Maine.Moon Coastal Maine (Moon Handbooks) Overview

I found it extremely insightful as to the most quaint New England towns to visit, which are the best routes to get there, practical information on the restaurants in town as well as their price ranges for any type of budgets - as well as advice on the many different bed and breakfasts that are available. This book caters to all travel styles, preferences and budgets. I planned most of my vacation with this book because it had phone numbers, prices, excellent directions... I could probably go on and on. Definitely a must for anyone who is traveling and not familiar with the area. It's like talking to someone who has lived in New England their whole life and is on hand to give you all the practical information you need to have a successful and fun/relaxing vacation. Fun Places to Go with Children in New England: 4th Edition, Over 500 Listings, Completely Revised & Updated ReviewA travel book cannot be all things to all people. This book tries, within the parameters set by the authors, to try to find places unique to New England, that are fun for parents and kids. In this, they do succeed.
But because they cover *all* the New England states, each section is necessarily full of capsule information, and no useful maps. (the state map of MA, for example, doesn't even show some of the towns mentioned in the text, or show where sites are located in relation to each other) It's basically a useful list with phone numbers, addresses and hours. The authors assume that the reader will have maps available, since written directions are nonexistent. So, I'm not sure if this a travel guide for native New Englanders, or visitors. Either way, it's damned inconvenient.
It did surprise me with some of the selections - like Harvard's Museum of Culture and Natural History and Myopia Polo; but coming from Boston myself, I noticed there wasn't a heck of a lot "new" in the MA section. In all fairness, it's hard to come up with new kid friendly sites in Boston. Most guidebooks cover that territory exhaustively. Restaurants are featured in each section (excellent idea) but no listing tells you how near the eateries are located to sites. Do you need to make special trips to eat out?
Another quibble I've got is that many of the sites chosen assume that readers are families with older children. However, it is angled for families going on weekends or vacations together, so I can't complain too much about the limited number of listings for those with toddlers in tow.
I sound pretty negative. I bought this book expecting to find lots more listings relevant to my needs (at this time), and am only partially satisfied. However, the authors have done their homework. You can tell that they visited the sites they mention, and that's no small thing. What they do say about the places they visited has a ring of authenticity, and I feel I can trust their word. Hiking Acadia National Park (Regional Hiking Series) ReviewThis is an invaluable guidebook for hikers at Acadia National Park. Our family -- including children ages 12, 9 and 3 -- visited Acadia for four days this summer and used this book to select a variety of trails. The authors describe the grade, distance, degree of difficulty and sights of nearly 150 miles of trails. Following their advice, we went along the Wonderland Trail to an enormous tidal pool, and chose the most appropriate route for our group up 1,200-foot Penobscot Mountain; there are many trails to the top of the mountain, and the book helped us choose the right one for our skill and fitness level. The older two children and one parent also climbed the cliffs of the Beehive; it's rightly described as a strenuous trail, but if you're not afraid of heights, the view of the coast is spectacular and the taste of wild blueberries at the top makes it special. (This hike is listed as one of the authors' favorites.) We found the book extremely useful. The book would also be useful for more experienced hikers; the authors have been on all of the park's trails, in all kinds of conditions. Snow is falling all over the island during Christmas season, and Nash Cortez is stirring up trouble with the animal rights protectors. Later, a dead body is found, and our hero is hired by the girlfriend of the deceased to find the killer. He warns her, she might not like what he finds... a premonition of what is to come. This book was full of enjoyable aspects, and every chapter was a pleasure to read. As with all of Philip Craig's books, you will work up an appetite salivating over the food descriptions too. There are excellent high quality photos of the bugs on the left hand side with info about the bugs habitat, etc... Also you get pictures of at least three corresponding flies with tips on how to fish them. The book covers Caddis, Mayflies, Stones, Terrestrials. Connecticut Wildlife: Biodiversity, Natural History and Conservation ReviewThis is a great reference book for Connecticut wildlife, from deer to aphids, and trees to lichens.
Many of the entries are written in a conversational tone, with the author sharing his experiences with that species in Connecticut. He will say something like, "I have often seen this species breeding in shallow pools of Milford in April" or "This species is limited to the traprock ridges of central Connecticut". That is what makes this book different from so many other reference books out there.
The book is not necessarily an identification key, although it would certainly be helpful when trying to identify a species. It is more a description of the species found in the state and how they live. That is certainly handy when all you've got is a guide for, say, trees of North America and many of the trees shown do not even live in Connecticut. Here you would find out that Chinquapin oak or yellow oak are rare on limestone ridges and ledges in western Connecticut, that scarlet oak is shade intolerant, and black oak is typical of dry, sandy soils.
There is also general information about wildlife and the many types of ecosystems found in Connecticut. You can use this book to learn about vernal pools, salt-marshes, or the Connecticut River. There is a discussion about how insects tolerate being frozen and another on how galls are made.
There are a lot of pictures in the book, but there is not a picture of each species listed, which I think is a drawback.

Turns out, I'd only been sticking my toe into a lake that is much broader and deeper than I'd imagined! This is a resource with a compilation of natural places, woods, lakes, farms, parks, etc. that you can't find on the internet--certainly not on one (or ten) sites, and not with the care and design put into this book.
Wish I'd had it long ago, but now I have much to look forward to!

Sea Kayaking along the New England Coast, 2nd ReviewA delightful collection of ocean kayaking trips along the entire New England coast, from Maine to Connecticut. The book describes more than 30 trips in detail: put-in spots, suggested route, possible lunch spots, scenery, caution areas, campsites, and local-knowledge items such as what tide is required for a passage, plus post-paddling eating establishments. Venn covers both day trips and multi-day camping expeditions. The author has clearly done her research in planning each trip, incorporating her own knowledge and experience with that of local paddlers who have done these trips for years. Venn's style is easy to read and follow, and if you have a navigational chart of the area it is very easy to map her suggested route using her text descriptions and the maps provided. The introduction contains very brief overviews of such general topics as equipment, navigation, and rescues, but because of the limited space delegated them, these topics are best covered elsewhere. Overall, this is an immensely useful book with enough detail so you know what to expect before you drive to the boat launch. Moon Vermont (Moon Handbooks) ReviewThis book is one of many guides about Vermont. I would not rate this one as the "best" guide I've seen, but it is also not the worst. Not enough info on hotels, motels and B and B's, but good suggestions on nice country drives and of course the standard fare on all the "hot" tourist places around Vermont.
It is printed in larger print, so retired RV'ers coming to Vermont during leaf season might want to consider this book as their primary guide. After all, since they are driving an RV they won't need motel info anyway so this book will give them more of what they are looking for without having to sort through info that would seem irrelevant to an RVer anyway.

Mobil 2009 Travel Guide New England (Forbes Travel Guide New England) ReviewI toured New England August 2008 and I took this guide with me (along with Frommer's and Fodor's). In my two weeks of driving through out this area I found the Mobil guide useless.
Up front, the guide is incomplete - for an example: Portsmouth, NH, where there are scores of great restaurants (travel.yahoo lists 564) the Mobil guide does not list any restaurants. Not one!
The guide often gives a recommendation but with no description, IE the write up of the recommended "Mike's City Diner" in Boston has two words, "American Menu". That's all.
Mobil Travel Guides give out Five-Star & Four-Star to the country's best Restaurant and Hotels. You want to know where and which ones - right? Well, good luck, as there is nothing to help you find them in the book. Also, there are no maps to help you to find the restaurants or hotels they do recommend. So when you get to a challenging city like Boston you're lost, unless you know the city or pay for a cab. Not good at all.
This is a guide that critical critiques other establishments but did not apply the standard of "excellence" to its own publication. What a disappointment.
