Acadia: The Complete Guide: Mt. Desert Island & Acadia National Park ReviewThe pictures and descriptions were excellent. My husband and I made a trip to Acadia last September, and I wish I had this guide while we were there. I sent copies to my mother and mother-in-law, and though they are unable to make the trip, they really enjoyed reading about the history of Bar Harbor and the descriptions of the park. The pictures depicted the beautiful scenary in the park, and anyone lucky enough to visit the area should take this book with them as a reference.Acadia: The Complete Guide: Mt. Nature in the City Seattle ReviewWe love this town, and this book has given us even more reasons to do so. I've lived in Seattle for 20 years, and my wife was born here. The authors' descriptions of the places we know are dead-on accurate, so I'm confident that the places we don't know about are described equally well. And so many! Who'd have thought that we have so much exploring to do? 'Nature in the City: Seattle' is a fun and unique collection of human & natural history, all in the context of a guide to every place in town that you can visit for a dose of nature. It's also a great sourcebook of things to do and places to go with your kids.
There are directions on how to get everywhere - including detailed directions for taking city buses, and most of their walks are close in.
We're going to buy multiple copies, and give them to all of our family members who live here, along with sending some copies to friends who are thinking of moving here.
I recently read that 75% of Seattle residents cite the natural surroundings as the reason they live here. (It's true for me!) So if you're planning on visiting: The way to see the REAL Seattle is to buy this book.Nature in the City Seattle Overview

Hiking Oregon's Geology (Hiking Geology) ReviewThis is a great book for anyone wanting to take hikes to see representative geology and to read a geological description of what they're seeing. The author details ninety hikes, mostly day hikes, in all corners of the state. The 'trailhead' directions are clear and easy to follow as are the descriptions of the trails. The book opens with an excellent 14 page introduction to Oregon's geological history and a nice appendix on indentifying rocks minerals. Dr. Bishop also wrote the 'In search of ancient Oregon', an outstanding overview of the states geological history.Hiking Oregon's Geology (Hiking Geology) Overview

Birding Rocky Mountain National Park ReviewThis summer while stopped at an overlook on Trail Ridge Rd. in Rocky Mountain National Park, we spoke with a Park Ranger who had Scott Roederer's Birding Rocky Mountain National Park book in her vehicle. She told us that Scott's book was the best book on birding in RMNP. She uses it as a reference for park visitors who have questions about different birds and where to find them. It also is very well illustrated. I would definitely recommend this book for birders who visit this magnificent Park.Birding Rocky Mountain National Park Overview

Glacier Day Hikes, revised edition ReviewGlacier Day Hikes was one of two guides I purchased prior to a recent trip to Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes (the sister park in Canada). There are 34 hikes listed here broken down by geographic regions inside Glacier. At the beginning of each hike listing, there is some basic information such as length in miles, level of difficulty, and best time of year to complete the hike. The maps and detailed descriptions are clear and relatively easy to use.
Overall, this is a good guide and if it was the only one I had purchased, I probably would have been pretty happy with it. Since I had the opportunity to compare it to another book, however, certain flaws became rather apparent. First, this book is too large to fit in a pocket so you can't easily bring it on the trail. Second, the elevation change (or amount of climbing) during the hike is not given either in the summary or the detailed description. This is a huge factor in determining the difficulty of a hike and should be included. Their difficulty rating is nice, but I prefer to gauge some aspects of the hike myself. Another quirk in the book is that the geographic categories don't make a lot of sense. Glacier National Park has several areas that lend themselves to this kind of distinction but in some cases the book made up its own boundaries instead and I found this very confusing to use. Finally, the book includes no hikes from Waterton, so if you go to the Canadian side, you will get no guidance here.
Comparing Glacier Day Hikes to the Best Easy Day Hikes Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks, 2nd (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) it's pretty easy for me to say that the Falcon Guide was more helpful. It had none of the flaws that Glacier Day Hikes did and was the one that I carried with me during the whole trip including the hikes themselves. This book does list more hikes within Glacier, but they are all longer hikes that many people won't want to try anyway. This is certainly not a bad book; it has a lot of useful information. But it is not as helpful as "Best Easy Day Hikes" so I can't recommend it.Glacier Day Hikes, revised edition Overview

Accessible Trails in Washington's Backcountry: A Guide to 85 Outings ReviewFor those of us who aren't able to trek up tough mountain trails...this book guides us through the trails that go to some beautiful spots in the backcountry...but that you can still take a wheelchair. The book includes detailed descriptions of the trails, and directions how to get there...And they've checked for things like the width of the trail and how steep---and have rated them by how easy it would be to get a wheelchair up them. A really valuable book---and the other cool thing is that this book has raised awareness and committment for the Forest Service to keep up the wheelchair accessible trails.Accessible Trails in Washington's Backcountry: A Guide to 85 Outings Overview

Best Hikes with Kids: Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine ReviewWhat better way can you think of to connect with your kids other than actually getting out and doing something with them like taking a hike? We're not talking hiking to a fast food restaurant to get an unhealthy meal and a little toy that will soon be lost in the shuffle or end up in your yard sale or chewed up by your dog. We're talking long term benefits, emotionally and physically.
According to the authors, hiking is "healthier than television, cheaper than downhill skiing . . . is within everyone's capabilities and will appeal to toddlers and teenagers, preschoolers and parents." This book also gives pointers on how to make hiking fun and enjoyable for the whole family. There are eighty-five hikes listed: twenty-four in Vermont, twenty-nine in New Hampshire and thirty-two in Maine.
There is a map legend in the front of the book. Scattered throughout the preliminary pages are boxed materials listing the pages containing "best hikes" for seeing a natural waterfall, following a stream, brook or river, beach walking or coast walking, investigating a pond or lake, swimming at a swimming hold or public beach, investigating caves, boulders, or unique geologic features, a summit or scenic vista (many with towers), for visiting a nature center or visitor center, loop hikes, overnight camping, with leashed dogs. You can effectively tailor your hike to your entire family, including your dog if you so desire!
Each hike listed has four main sections to browse and consider:
1. Before You Go . . . referral to a USGS map of the area and a telephone number to access current weather conditions
2.About the Hike . . . a day or overnight hike, how challenging it is for children, dates the hike can be undertaken, how long it is in miles, hiking time, high point/elevation gain and symbols to indicate what to expect
3. Specific directions on how to get there
4. A dialogue on what to expect while you are on the trail
This is a marvelous book! Whether you want to grab your picnic basket and take a leisurely stroll or do some serious hiking, the choice is yours. My choice would be the Ocean Trail, a mere 0.6 miles to Thunder Hole, one of my childhood favorites.Best Hikes with Kids: Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine Overview
