some if out of date, the saltwater loactions to fish are still tehre but some are posted and maine charges $30 for a saltwater license now, the book says it is Free Fishing.
other than that the directions and everything are spot on, well worth the money to have with you and carry in the truck as you travel.Moon Spotlight Maine's Southern Coast: Including Portland Overview

Fodor's New England, 28th Edition (Travel Guide) ReviewI took this 28th Edition with me on my August 10-day tour through Boston, New Hampshire & Maine. I also had with me: Frommer'sVermont, New Hampshire and Maine, However, hands down, Fodor's is the better of the two.
Do note, that both Fodor's and Frommer's target those who have some jingle in their pockets. Thus, if you are a student/backpacker/struggling worker/stock trader who specialized in Bear Stearns, you might want to consider getting Lonely Planet 2008. In Fodor's you will find very few restaurants (under $20) and fewer accommodations (under $80).
This guide starts out with Boston, the jewel of New England's cities. There is an ample seventy plus pages to get you around this great city. As the guide states, "bring your walking shoes," for much of Boston exists to be explored by foot. Throughout Fodor's when you see a "Fodor's Choice" next to a restaurant, hotel or site, do yourself a favor and take time to imbibe.I found Fodor's recommendations in New Hampshire and Maine to be "right on" and the writing was as informative as it was engaging.

Where this guide falters is with its maps (or lack of). There are no city maps for many of the most important cities. In fact outside of the four cities of Boston, Concord, Providence, Newport and Portland, there are no other city maps. This means you are on your own, and most of the time it is not easy find where the restaurants, hotels and sites are. It baffles me why would a quality guide skimp on something as important as maps? Duh.
Wait, the worse blunder is the total absence of anything that can help you understand the culture, customs, the people and politics of New England. AND, there is NO mention of history! I mean, New England does have a serious history, right Fodor's?I mean, does the birthplace of the nation ring a bell?
Wow this could have been a five star guide if they (editors/writer) coulda/woulda done it right. But, even with these significant shortcomings Fodor's still is a useful and reliable guide. Strongly recommendedFodor's New England, 28th Edition (Travel Guide) Overview

Moon Coastal Maine (Moon Handbooks) ReviewHilary Nangle's enthusiastic guide to "Coastal Maine" captures the essence of what is still the relatively unspoiled and beautiful coastline between Kittery and Eastport. The roots of settlement in Maine may go back to the earliest days of European exploration in North America, but the coastline itself is the star here. From the expansive beaches south of Portland to the shopping mecca of L.L. Bean in Freeport to the magnificently rocky Acadia National Park to the remote towns and villages by the Canadian border, Coastal Maine has much to entertain.
This Moon Handback is a useful mixture of maps, photographs, travel narrative and practical information. Nangle divides the coastline into seven segments: The Southern Coast, Greater Portland, Mid-Coast Region, Penobscot Bay, Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle, Acadia Region, and the Down East Coast. In each segment, she explores the tourist highlights, entertainment possibilities, shopping, accomodations, and dining. Sidebar items address unusual features such as the tremendous tidal range in Eastern Maine or the unique accent of Downeast Mainers. The guide comes in a compact and easy to use format and includes lists of useful websites for further research.
"Moon Handbooks Coastal Maine" is very highly recommended as a planning and traveling resource for those headed for Downeast Maine.Moon Coastal Maine (Moon Handbooks) Overview

Temple Stream: A Rural Odyssey ReviewOften the journey is more important than the destination, and that's the sort of journey author Bill Roorbach traveled in writing this delightful book. In 1992 Roorbach and his wife bought an old house on the banks of the Temple Stream in rural Maine. Their occupancy of the house was frequently interrupted by career needs, but they always returned to their stream-side home with joy and relief.
The Temple Stream rises from a well-hidden artesian spring (sorry, that COULD be seen as a spoiler) on Day Mountain in Avon, my town, and gathers influence on its trip through Temple to join the Sandy River in Farmington, and from there to the Kennebec River, Merrymeeting Bay, and the Gulf of Maine. In the 19th century the stream drove dozens of mills -- sawmills, gristmills, fulling mills. Products of the mills were consumed locally or shipped downstream, bringing wealth back upstream. All that industry washed away when the railroad came, providing a means for raw ingredients to be transported to central mills. Roorbach refers to this change as "the true down-trickle of economics" (p. 14).
Fascinated by the natural history of the region, Roorbach formed the intention of traveling the full length of the Temple, by canoe and on foot. He began this project in the summer of 1999 and completed it at the winter solstice in late 2000.
Temple Stream: A Rural Odyssey is the story of that quest, interspersed with his personal history, the history of the local settlements, and a Pandora's box of the rich environment around the stream. Roorbach observes the beavers and describes their impact on the stream; consults a field botanist for more detailed understanding of the flora of the region; calls on his lifelong interest in bird-watching; and grows in appreciation of our watery planet through a chance encounter with an elderly hydrologist, found barefoot in a flood pipe with her long skirt rucked up. Local characters and customs are whimsically described, some of them "composites;" I won't meet the Thoreau-quoting giant Earl Pomeroy or the mad house-sitter Mrs. Bollocks on my errands in town but their ways are familiar.
All these characters, all the small renewals of nature, even the birth of Roorbach's daughter are presented in a gentle and contemplative style and loosely marked off by solstice and equinox. There are no real denouements here, but if you've ever lost yourself for a while in a stream and wondered where it's going, this book may bring you some of the pleasure it brought me. If you have any interest in memoirs of rural life, I recommend this book to you.

Fun Places to Go with Children in New England: 4th Edition, Over 500 Listings, Completely Revised & Updated ReviewA travel book cannot be all things to all people. This book tries, within the parameters set by the authors, to try to find places unique to New England, that are fun for parents and kids. In this, they do succeed.
But because they cover *all* the New England states, each section is necessarily full of capsule information, and no useful maps. (the state map of MA, for example, doesn't even show some of the towns mentioned in the text, or show where sites are located in relation to each other) It's basically a useful list with phone numbers, addresses and hours. The authors assume that the reader will have maps available, since written directions are nonexistent. So, I'm not sure if this a travel guide for native New Englanders, or visitors. Either way, it's damned inconvenient.
It did surprise me with some of the selections - like Harvard's Museum of Culture and Natural History and Myopia Polo; but coming from Boston myself, I noticed there wasn't a heck of a lot "new" in the MA section. In all fairness, it's hard to come up with new kid friendly sites in Boston. Most guidebooks cover that territory exhaustively. Restaurants are featured in each section (excellent idea) but no listing tells you how near the eateries are located to sites. Do you need to make special trips to eat out?
Another quibble I've got is that many of the sites chosen assume that readers are families with older children. However, it is angled for families going on weekends or vacations together, so I can't complain too much about the limited number of listings for those with toddlers in tow.
I sound pretty negative. I bought this book expecting to find lots more listings relevant to my needs (at this time), and am only partially satisfied. However, the authors have done their homework. You can tell that they visited the sites they mention, and that's no small thing. What they do say about the places they visited has a ring of authenticity, and I feel I can trust their word. It's hard work researching (esp with children in tow)...now if only they could fix up the flaws.Fun Places to Go with Children in New England: 4th Edition, Over 500 Listings, Completely Revised & Updated Overview

Hiking Acadia National Park (Regional Hiking Series) ReviewThis is an invaluable guidebook for hikers at Acadia National Park. Our family -- including children ages 12, 9 and 3 -- visited Acadia for four days this summer and used this book to select a variety of trails. The authors describe the grade, distance, degree of difficulty and sights of nearly 150 miles of trails. Following their advice, we went along the Wonderland Trail to an enormous tidal pool, and chose the most appropriate route for our group up 1,200-foot Penobscot Mountain; there are many trails to the top of the mountain, and the book helped us choose the right one for our skill and fitness level. The older two children and one parent also climbed the cliffs of the Beehive; it's rightly described as a strenuous trail, but if you're not afraid of heights, the view of the coast is spectacular and the taste of wild blueberries at the top makes it special. (This hike is listed as one of the authors' favorites.) We found the book extremely useful. The book would also be useful for more experienced hikers; the authors have been on all of the park's trails, in all kinds of conditions. And the book fits neatly in a backpack, for handy reference in case you need to check the maps while hiking. Highly recommended.Hiking Acadia National Park (Regional Hiking Series) Overview

E.B. White: A Biography ReviewHe's so much more than "Charlotte's Web" or "Stuart Little"! Read a volume of E.B. White's essays first and follow it up with this biography, and then you'll know almost everything about the man and his work. Author Scott Elledge was fortunate enough to have corresponded and visited with White; this work is therefore as accurate and as personal as one can be. It begins with the birth of Elwyn Brooks "Andy" White in Westchester County, N.Y., and follows his path to the West Coast as a young man and eventually back to New York and The New Yorker magazine, with diversions to a farm in Maine. The chapters about The New Yorker offices are the most interesting to those of us curious about how that publication works. And don't take that "Elements of Style" paperback on your bookshelf for granted! (And who *was* Strunk, anyway?) You'll learn here why White got involved in that project and what work went into its revision.
This book includes more than 30 pages of photos, illustrations, and original essay drafts. It's fascinating to see White's penciled editorial changes over his own typewritten paragraphs.
Recommended for fans of E.B. White, fans of The New Yorker magazine, and writers of all genres.E.B. White: A Biography Overview

Mobil 2009 Travel Guide New England (Forbes Travel Guide New England) ReviewI toured New England August 2008 and I took this guide with me (along with Frommer's and Fodor's). In my two weeks of driving through out this area I found the Mobil guide useless.
Up front, the guide is incomplete - for an example: Portsmouth, NH, where there are scores of great restaurants (travel.yahoo lists 564) the Mobil guide does not list any restaurants. Not one!
The guide often gives a recommendation but with no description, IE the write up of the recommended "Mike's City Diner" in Boston has two words, "American Menu". That's all.
Mobil Travel Guides give out Five-Star & Four-Star to the country's best Restaurant and Hotels. You want to know where and which ones - right? Well, good luck, as there is nothing to help you find them in the book. Also, there are no maps to help you to find the restaurants or hotels they do recommend. So when you get to a challenging city like Boston you're lost, unless you know the city or pay for a cab. Not good at all.
This is a guide that critical critiques other establishments but did not apply the standard of "excellence" to its own publication. What a disappointment. At best, it is only conditionally recommended. I did find Fodor's New England 2009 to be a super guide.Mobil 2009 Travel Guide New England (Forbes Travel Guide New England) Overview

Best Hikes with Kids: Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine ReviewWhat better way can you think of to connect with your kids other than actually getting out and doing something with them like taking a hike? We're not talking hiking to a fast food restaurant to get an unhealthy meal and a little toy that will soon be lost in the shuffle or end up in your yard sale or chewed up by your dog. We're talking long term benefits, emotionally and physically.
According to the authors, hiking is "healthier than television, cheaper than downhill skiing . . . is within everyone's capabilities and will appeal to toddlers and teenagers, preschoolers and parents." This book also gives pointers on how to make hiking fun and enjoyable for the whole family. There are eighty-five hikes listed: twenty-four in Vermont, twenty-nine in New Hampshire and thirty-two in Maine.
There is a map legend in the front of the book. Scattered throughout the preliminary pages are boxed materials listing the pages containing "best hikes" for seeing a natural waterfall, following a stream, brook or river, beach walking or coast walking, investigating a pond or lake, swimming at a swimming hold or public beach, investigating caves, boulders, or unique geologic features, a summit or scenic vista (many with towers), for visiting a nature center or visitor center, loop hikes, overnight camping, with leashed dogs. You can effectively tailor your hike to your entire family, including your dog if you so desire!
Each hike listed has four main sections to browse and consider:
1. Before You Go . . . referral to a USGS map of the area and a telephone number to access current weather conditions
2.About the Hike . . . a day or overnight hike, how challenging it is for children, dates the hike can be undertaken, how long it is in miles, hiking time, high point/elevation gain and symbols to indicate what to expect
3. Specific directions on how to get there
4. A dialogue on what to expect while you are on the trail
This is a marvelous book! Whether you want to grab your picnic basket and take a leisurely stroll or do some serious hiking, the choice is yours. My choice would be the Ocean Trail, a mere 0.6 miles to Thunder Hole, one of my childhood favorites.Best Hikes with Kids: Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine Overview

The Maine Woods (Penguin Nature Library) Review"The Maine Woods" relates three separate trips Henry Thoreau made to the Mount Katahdin and Allagash Wilderness Waterway region of Maine At 29 years old in 1846, at 36 years old in 1853, and at 40 years old in 1857. In each of the stories he travels with a friend by rail, steamboat, and coach to the starting point, hires a guide, and embarks on his adventure. Even for a reader familiar with the region, it is essential to keep a map handy to follow the author in his travels. In the first trip he hires a local outfitter as a guide, and poles up the West Branch of the Penobscot River, across lakes and up streams, as close to Mt. Katahdin as he can get, then climbs to the summit of what the Indians called Ktaadn, or "highest land," and now called Mt. Katahdin. His route up the mountain approximated what we now know as the Abol trail, though with no trail to follow, his experience was very different from today's Abol daypacker. He summited on a cloudy day, and missed out on the breathtaking views, though he did get infected with the spiritual bug, and he waxes philosophical as he makes his way back down. Thoreau's enduring memory of the region is "the continuousness of the forest." Thanks to the generous 209,501 acre gift of one of Maine's Governors, Percival Baxter, that memory of Thoreau's is also likely to be yours.
By contrast, the second story is less adventurous, being a canoe-camping trip on Chesuncook and surrounding lakes. Thoreau ends the story reflecting on man's vulnerability in the wilderness, and prays that man will not become "civilized off the face of the earth." I take this trip to be fundamentally a reconnaissance for the third and most ambitious of his trips, titled "The Allagash and East Branch." He went to Maine this time intending to make the standard Allagash Wilderness Waterway trip that many of us plan and few ever make. He lets himself get talked out of it and into a considerably more difficult trip. He starts as with the Chesuncook trip, but carries on northward into Chamberlain, Eagle, Telos, and Webster Lakes, and through Webster Stream to Second Lake and Great Lake Matagamon. From there it's flat water down the East Branch of the Penobscot. The Webster Stream segment was basically a ten mile portage. Fortunately he had hired a most remarkable Indian Guide, Joe Polis. Polis took his homemade birch bark canoe down through the Webster Stream rapids alone, and Thoreau and his companion (whom he unaccountably never names), fought their way through the thick underbrush and the jumble of trees along the riverbank. In summary, he takes the West Branch upstream as far as it goes, traverses the high elevation lakes over to the headwaters of the East Branch, and completely circles the Katahdin massif in the process.
Thoreau does not consistently delight the reader with is craft; his creative spirit is intermittent. But when inspired, he rises to the task:
Referring to the logs which get hung up along the shore, waiting for a freshet to carry them down to the sawmill, he writes, "Methinks that must be where all my property lies, cast up on the rocks along some distant and unexplored stream, and waiting for an unheard of freshet to fetch it down."
And about the noises he hears at night, "When camping in such a wilderness as this, you are prepared to hear sounds from some of its inhabitants which give voice to its wildness."
And his boatmen: "...so cool, so collected, so fertile in resources are they."
And anyone who has trod through the dark, damp woods between those lakes will recognize this: "It was impossible for us to discern the Indian's trail in the elastic moss, which like a thick carpet, covered every rock and fallen tree, as well as the earth.
And while experiencing one of the Allagash's classic thunderstorms: "I thought it must be a place where the thunder loved, where the lightning practiced to keep its hand in, and it would do no harm to shatter a few pines.

Backroads of New England: Your Guide To New England's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures ReviewWhen fall comes in New England, the trees turn into a splendid mass of reds, oranges and yellows that temporarily distract us from the coming winter. At the same time, the first fresh snowfalls have a special beauty that New Englanders love as well. But the first blush of spring causes a special joy to burst out from our hearts. In the lazy days of summer, we love to watch the wind blow the grasses and trees from languid poses.
At any one of those times, I find myself thinking how much fun it would be to see some new sights in the context of those favorite New England conditions. In the forty years I've lived in New England, I've found many of my favorite locations purely by accident. The back roads are always the best. But I don't have the time to randomly drive all the back roads to find the best ones.
That's where Backroads of New England comes in. Kim Knox Beckius has found 30 delightful drives over back road that mix scenery, history, culture and just plain fun. I have taken about half of the drives in the book, so I can swear by those. I am looking forward to doing the rest now that I know where to go.
How can I tell I would like the others? First, Ms. Beckius provides helpful essays about where to begin, what to see, and what to stop and do along the way. She even includes some suggestions for hiking to beautiful waterfalls. Second, William H. Johnson's gorgeous photographs colorfully illuminate the main sights for each drive. Whether you love covered bridges, snow-capped peaks, delightful streams, pounding surf, or mysterious vistas, you can page through the book to find the places that speak mostly fervently to your soul.
The book is also organized by state. So if you are planning to go just to Maine and arrive by air in Portland, you can simply focus on the Maine trips and those in New Hampshire and northeast Massachusetts that are not too far away. If you live in New York, and want to drive for no more than two hours, you can focus on that radius in western Connecticut and Massachusetts.
I have been looking at travel guides for New England for many years. I've never seen a finer one for back roads adventures.
Give it a try!Backroads of New England: Your Guide To New England's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures Overview

Maine's Golden Road: A Memoir ReviewBeing one who visits the Golden Road almost yearly, I purchased the book with enthusiasm. My experience was mostly positive.
Gould demonstrates vast knowledge about the area. He describes: the realities of the Maine woods experience, personalities of the inhabitants, varieties of visitors, wildlife, history and industry.
One area of disappointment was Gould's frequent choice of vocabulary and references. While reading, a dictionary had to be at my side. Also, frequently used french, latin and some historical references made reading more difficult and not fun.
Mr. Gould did at times poke fun at his intellectual perspective. However, his choice of words does not seem suited for most.
All in all, the book is a positive experience. One can take a trip to Maine's Golden Road, from their favorite arm chair.Maine's Golden Road: A Memoir Overview

Chimney Pond Tales: Yarns Told by Leroy Dudley ReviewThis collection of Penobscot tales is a real winner. I don't say this lightly. I am an Abenaki and there are few books out there by non-Indian writers/storytellers that are worth reading. This is definitely worth reading. It is the kind of book you think you will read and pass on to someone. Then you find that you don't WANT to pass on your only copy, so you buy more copies to pass on to others.
Rarely there comes along a book that is fitting for youngsters and adults. Chimney Pond Tales is one of those rare birds of a book that crosses the border of age. The "character" Pomola is a traditional trickster figure. He is trouble with a capital T. But you cannot help but side with him, even when he is being his most contentious self. Stories that feature tricksters do us humans a huge service: they show us our own frailties, allow us to be ok just as we are. We need this in a world where everything tires to be at odds with everything else. We need to be shown that sometimes we are just problems ourselves. This book of tales does that service in the world. Each tale is both entertaining and instructive.
Get yourself a copy. Buy a couple extras to give away. Read the tales when the weather is icky and you need to cheer yourself. Take it in the car to read when you are given a few precious moments you hadn't planned on. It is a treasure.
Chimney Pond Tales is in its 20th year. Why are you waiting to get your own copy?Chimney Pond Tales: Yarns Told by Leroy Dudley Overview
