Walking Home: A Traveler in the Alaskan Wilderness, a Journey into the Human Heart ReviewI have read all three of Schooler's books. And, of the three, this one is my favorite. Schooler has already proven to be a descriptive and effective storyteller, yet in this book, he shows the reader more of himself, his motivations, and his human side. His story is one of how a man can cope with loss and transition. And, Schooler is a man's man who has depth, insight and humility.
I recommend "Walking Home" to any man who is in transition; who is moving into that real or metaphorical wilderness of the soul. Who becomes aware of the unknown parts of the world, and of himself. I recommend Schooler's book to any woman who wants to better understand a man's journey of moving "into" a heavy heart, walking "through" the heaviness, and, ultimately, getting "beyond" the old story and accepting "the next" one.

Seabirds: A Natural History ReviewI really enjoyed reading this book and I'm currently perusing it a second time. The author is a biologist who writes very well for a general audience. One of the strengths of the book is that it presents a decidedly "big picture" view of seabirds - comparing seabird natural histories around the globe, through time, and with other groups of animals. It asks and attempts to answer many "why" questions about seabird life history strategies in an entertaining and thoughtful way. I highly recommend this book to birders and naturalists who are interested in these fascinating and sometimes mysterious birds. I caution, however, that this book is not about the field identification of seabirds and does not treat particular families of seabirds in a specific way - but there are more and more field guides and books that cover that area separately.Seabirds: A Natural History Overview

Rocky Mountains (Smithsonian Natural History Series) ReviewI wrote this book because I love the Rockies, and I wanted more people to know about their geologic history, climate, vegetation, and wildlife. The Rockies preserve some of the last, best patches of undisturbed wilderness in North America. They provide an oasis of cool, moist climate, flanked by prairies on the east, and by deserts on the west. As such, they provide refuge for thousands of species of plants and animals that are adapted to cool climates. The wildlife of the Rockies has to be tough to survive the long, cold winters, but at the same time the Rocky Mountain ecosystems can be incredibly fragile. My aim is to inform you about the wonders of the Rockies, in hopes that you will catch some of my enthusiasm. So whether you are an avid hiker/camper/outdoor enthusiast, or an 'armchair traveller,' I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.Rocky Mountains (Smithsonian Natural History Series) Overview

Temple Stream: A Rural Odyssey ReviewOften the journey is more important than the destination, and that's the sort of journey author Bill Roorbach traveled in writing this delightful book. In 1992 Roorbach and his wife bought an old house on the banks of the Temple Stream in rural Maine. Their occupancy of the house was frequently interrupted by career needs, but they always returned to their stream-side home with joy and relief.
The Temple Stream rises from a well-hidden artesian spring (sorry, that COULD be seen as a spoiler) on Day Mountain in Avon, my town, and gathers influence on its trip through Temple to join the Sandy River in Farmington, and from there to the Kennebec River, Merrymeeting Bay, and the Gulf of Maine. In the 19th century the stream drove dozens of mills -- sawmills, gristmills, fulling mills. Products of the mills were consumed locally or shipped downstream, bringing wealth back upstream. All that industry washed away when the railroad came, providing a means for raw ingredients to be transported to central mills. Roorbach refers to this change as "the true down-trickle of economics" (p. 14).
Fascinated by the natural history of the region, Roorbach formed the intention of traveling the full length of the Temple, by canoe and on foot. He began this project in the summer of 1999 and completed it at the winter solstice in late 2000.
Temple Stream: A Rural Odyssey is the story of that quest, interspersed with his personal history, the history of the local settlements, and a Pandora's box of the rich environment around the stream. Roorbach observes the beavers and describes their impact on the stream; consults a field botanist for more detailed understanding of the flora of the region; calls on his lifelong interest in bird-watching; and grows in appreciation of our watery planet through a chance encounter with an elderly hydrologist, found barefoot in a flood pipe with her long skirt rucked up. Local characters and customs are whimsically described, some of them "composites;" I won't meet the Thoreau-quoting giant Earl Pomeroy or the mad house-sitter Mrs. Bollocks on my errands in town but their ways are familiar.
All these characters, all the small renewals of nature, even the birth of Roorbach's daughter are presented in a gentle and contemplative style and loosely marked off by solstice and equinox. There are no real denouements here, but if you've ever lost yourself for a while in a stream and wondered where it's going, this book may bring you some of the pleasure it brought me. If you have any interest in memoirs of rural life, I recommend this book to you.

Connecticut Wildlife: Biodiversity, Natural History and Conservation ReviewThis is a great reference book for Connecticut wildlife, from deer to aphids, and trees to lichens.
Many of the entries are written in a conversational tone, with the author sharing his experiences with that species in Connecticut. He will say something like, "I have often seen this species breeding in shallow pools of Milford in April" or "This species is limited to the traprock ridges of central Connecticut". That is what makes this book different from so many other reference books out there.
The book is not necessarily an identification key, although it would certainly be helpful when trying to identify a species. It is more a description of the species found in the state and how they live. That is certainly handy when all you've got is a guide for, say, trees of North America and many of the trees shown do not even live in Connecticut. Here you would find out that Chinquapin oak or yellow oak are rare on limestone ridges and ledges in western Connecticut, that scarlet oak is shade intolerant, and black oak is typical of dry, sandy soils.
There is also general information about wildlife and the many types of ecosystems found in Connecticut. You can use this book to learn about vernal pools, salt-marshes, or the Connecticut River. There is a discussion about how insects tolerate being frozen and another on how galls are made.
There are a lot of pictures in the book, but there is not a picture of each species listed, which I think is a drawback.
Entries are organized by biological classification, for example, 'segmented worms', with a brief introduction of that group.Connecticut Wildlife: Biodiversity, Natural History and Conservation Overview

Life in the Cold: An Introduction to Winter Ecology ReviewThorough and scientific, this a good companion volume to Jim Halfpenny's excellent book on the same subject. Whereas Halfpenny's book is an excellent introduction for students and teachers of ecology, Marchand's book goes into more detail on physiological, behavioral, and biochemical adaptations to winter. It is therefore best suited to biology majors, graduate students, and naturalists with a desire for a complete explanation of how animals and plants adapt and survive in cold weather.Life in the Cold: An Introduction to Winter Ecology Overview

Prehistoric Native Americans and Ecological Change: Human Ecosystems in Eastern North America since the Pleistocene (Cambridge Studies in Ecology) ReviewFor anyone interested in the migration of early populations to the North and South American continents, this book is very satisfying. There are some minor problems noted, but overall, the beringia land theory of migration is pretty much set aside in favor of other routes. This book is very technical, over my head in quite a few spots, but it is obvious that this book emerged from years and various disciplines of research. I found myself agreeing with them on a number of points and allowing my own project of Indian environmentalism to go in new directions.Prehistoric Native Americans and Ecological Change: Human Ecosystems in Eastern North America since the Pleistocene (Cambridge Studies in Ecology) Overview

Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City ReviewSprinkled throughout this book are 12 digitally-rendered aerial "photos" of New York in 1409, often featured as before-and-after comparisons of present-day Manhattan. These are beautiful and utterly fascinating images and are the heart of this volume and the program behind it (WCS's Mannahatta Project).
The book is also chock-full of historic and computer-rendered maps, wildlife and ecosystem photos and other illustrations. Sanderson's text is informative, entertaining and not preachy.
Through this excellent book, the reader not only learns about the natural history of NYC but sees it as a microcosm of the human impacts on landscapes across the continent and world.
The writing style and tone remind me of the excellent "World Without Us" but with the added bonus of being heavily illustrated.
I only wish that there were more of the large-format digital before-and-after Manhatta Project photos... a coffee table book would be justified!
Highest recommendation (and a must-own if you live in or love NYC).Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City Overview

A Guide to Bird Finding in New Jersey, revised and updated ReviewThis book covers the vast majority (something like 80) of the popular bird watching sites in New jersey. It tells you what birds you are likely to see there and where the best places (and best times) are. It has lots of detail on rare birds. There is also a great section in the back that goes species by species and tells you where you are most likely to see them and how common they are in New Jersey. You still need a good field guide, but this is a great book for actually finding the birds in the area.A Guide to Bird Finding in New Jersey, revised and updated Overview

Wild America: The Record of a 30,000 Mile Journey Around the Continent by a Distinguished Naturalist and His British Colleague ReviewLet me just quote my favorite line from the book. It is when James Fisher, an Englishman, first sees the Grand Canyon:
"I went down there a few yards. The world ended; began again eight miles away. Between the ends of the world was a chasm."
Now I have never seen the Grand Canyon, but reading about it with such wonder through Mr. Fisher's eyes was extraordinary. It brought tears to my eyes. It goes to show how truly amazing and beautiful America is. I highly recommend this book, not just for the birds these two men see, but also for all the wonderful sights they come encounter. It made me want to retrace their route.Wild America: The Record of a 30,000 Mile Journey Around the Continent by a Distinguished Naturalist and His British Colleague Overview

Birds and Birding at Cape May: What to See and When and Where to Go ReviewCape May is a peninsula, the southernmost point of New Jersey. It separates Delaware Bay from the Atlantic Ocean, and lies only fourteen miles north of Delaware. Consequently, millions of birds funnel through the area in the spring and fall of each year. There are a number of nature preserves and wildlife refuges nearby. The Cape May Bird Observatory is the center of birding activity in the area.
"If birds are an excellent judge of climate, Cape May has the finest climate in the United States, for it has the greatest variety of birds." Alexander Wilson was writing in 1812 before Texas, the current US record holder, joined the union. But the area is still one of the best places to watch birds in the United States.
The climate also attracts thousands of people to the area. There is a wonderful array of attractions, beaches, restaurants, hotels and camping spots available to birders and to any companions who may not share their passions.
The authors have dozens of birding books and articles to their credit. As a quick perusal of the extracts on Amazon proves, they know the area intimately, and describe it in clear, helpful language. They profile 33 birding locations, and discuss the histories of popular birding sites. Some of the best passages deal with some of the great birders who enjoyed this area: Alexander Wilson to Roger Tory Peterson to Pete Dunne. They add delightful accounts of their own experiences; the sighting of a Yellow-nosed Albatross is especially good.
There is simply no better single volume resource covering the birds, history and geography of this area. If you go, take along this book, and stop in at the Cape May Bird Observatory to see what is going on. BirdCapeMay can give you a head start before you leave home.

Dragonflies and Damselflies of the West (Princeton Field Guides) ReviewBasics: 2009, 535 pages, softcover, 850+ color photos of all 348 species in western US and Canada, range maps
This is an exceptional book for any dragonfly enthusiast with a focus on identification. This is the most complete and best quality of any related book available.
As noted in the title, the "West" refers to all species found in (a) Alaska, (b) Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Nunavut and all provinces west, and (c) N/S Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and all other states west. This region encompasses 348 species, all of which are shown in this book.
All photographs are in color and of very good quality and size. All but 4 or 5 of the species are shown with at least 2 photos. Many species have 3 or 4 photographs. The photos show differences between male and female, adult and immature, and variations due to pruinose and heteromorphs. These photographs will be very helpful with the identification of most odonata you encounter - except for those frustratingly similar species. This is where the detailed text will be very informative and useful.
The text, ranging from ½ to a full page for each species, consists of 6 distinct sections. The bulk of the material is found in Description, Identification, and Natural History. A single, yet potent, sentence is given to each of the other three sections of Habitat, Flight Season, and Distribution.
The identification section does a good job of comparing similar species, giving pointers of how to differentiate between the finer points. The description of each can often be very detailed, which might be a bit too detailed for the novice or a person with a passing interest to know what to call that dragonfly flitting around the garden. To truly identify down to the species level, the book often describes the individual with terms of lateral thoracic stripes, postocular spots, abdomen black above S2-7, and other necessary "scientific" descriptors.
Expanding on this detail are wonderful drawings of the abdominal tips and appendages, which are sometimes the only means for identification.
The book has other brief sections on research, collecting, naming, anatomical labels (to help with terms in the identification section), and natural history.
Lastly, a distribution map is supplied for each individual. Where relevant, the maps zoom in to the restricted ranges for many of the species. The boundaries for the states and provinces are shown, which help with better detail.
This is, by far, the best odonate book available for the US. I certainly hope an eastern companion will follow in the near future.
I've listed several related books below...
1) Common Dragonflies of the Southwest by Biggs
2) Dragonflies and Damselflies (Odonata) of Texas, Volume I by Abbott
3) Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the South-Central United States by Abbott
4) Dragonflies and Damselflies of California by Manolis
5) Dragonflies & Damselflies of the Border Southwest by Behrstock
6) Dragonflies of Alaska by Hudson

Chimney Pond Tales: Yarns Told by Leroy Dudley ReviewThis collection of Penobscot tales is a real winner. I don't say this lightly. I am an Abenaki and there are few books out there by non-Indian writers/storytellers that are worth reading. This is definitely worth reading. It is the kind of book you think you will read and pass on to someone. Then you find that you don't WANT to pass on your only copy, so you buy more copies to pass on to others.
Rarely there comes along a book that is fitting for youngsters and adults. Chimney Pond Tales is one of those rare birds of a book that crosses the border of age. The "character" Pomola is a traditional trickster figure. He is trouble with a capital T. But you cannot help but side with him, even when he is being his most contentious self. Stories that feature tricksters do us humans a huge service: they show us our own frailties, allow us to be ok just as we are. We need this in a world where everything tires to be at odds with everything else. We need to be shown that sometimes we are just problems ourselves. This book of tales does that service in the world. Each tale is both entertaining and instructive.
Get yourself a copy. Buy a couple extras to give away. Read the tales when the weather is icky and you need to cheer yourself. Take it in the car to read when you are given a few precious moments you hadn't planned on. It is a treasure.
Chimney Pond Tales is in its 20th year. Why are you waiting to get your own copy?Chimney Pond Tales: Yarns Told by Leroy Dudley Overview
