Northwest Garden Style: Ideas, Designs, and Methods for the Creative Gardener ReviewThe writer starts out by saying "gardening, like politics, is the art of the possible". This book is written "to help non-professionals solve their landscaping problems by showing how other home gardeners have dealt with similar landscaping issues".
Written for the gardener in the Pacific Northwest, this book offers ideas, designs and methods for the creative gardener. In each of the eight chapters the writer introduces the topic, provides some background and context, then describes and illustrates two or three gardens where the owners have successfully faced similar issues. Some chapters, for example "Gardens in Small Spaces" and "Gardening on a Slope", address problem sites that some gardeners are faced with, others, such as "Waterwise Gardens" and "Gardens for Attracting Wildlife", help gardeners implement their choices in design. Each chapter has a plant list (and, mercifully, it's quite compact), a checklist to guide planning - sometimes with how-to-do-it diagrams - and some additional ideas to enrich this style of garden.
The writer is knowledgeable about the problems and possibilities facing the gardener in the Pacific Northwest and writes with clarity, always maintaining a balance between the lyrical and the practical.
L. Quartermain Younker's photographs illustrate the richness of northwest gardens and focus on some of the successful treatments of daunting sites and the applications of environmentally friendly principles.

Seabirds: A Natural History ReviewI really enjoyed reading this book and I'm currently perusing it a second time. The author is a biologist who writes very well for a general audience. One of the strengths of the book is that it presents a decidedly "big picture" view of seabirds - comparing seabird natural histories around the globe, through time, and with other groups of animals. It asks and attempts to answer many "why" questions about seabird life history strategies in an entertaining and thoughtful way. I highly recommend this book to birders and naturalists who are interested in these fascinating and sometimes mysterious birds. I caution, however, that this book is not about the field identification of seabirds and does not treat particular families of seabirds in a specific way - but there are more and more field guides and books that cover that area separately.Seabirds: A Natural History Overview

Temple Stream: A Rural Odyssey ReviewOften the journey is more important than the destination, and that's the sort of journey author Bill Roorbach traveled in writing this delightful book. In 1992 Roorbach and his wife bought an old house on the banks of the Temple Stream in rural Maine. Their occupancy of the house was frequently interrupted by career needs, but they always returned to their stream-side home with joy and relief.
The Temple Stream rises from a well-hidden artesian spring (sorry, that COULD be seen as a spoiler) on Day Mountain in Avon, my town, and gathers influence on its trip through Temple to join the Sandy River in Farmington, and from there to the Kennebec River, Merrymeeting Bay, and the Gulf of Maine. In the 19th century the stream drove dozens of mills -- sawmills, gristmills, fulling mills. Products of the mills were consumed locally or shipped downstream, bringing wealth back upstream. All that industry washed away when the railroad came, providing a means for raw ingredients to be transported to central mills. Roorbach refers to this change as "the true down-trickle of economics" (p. 14).
Fascinated by the natural history of the region, Roorbach formed the intention of traveling the full length of the Temple, by canoe and on foot. He began this project in the summer of 1999 and completed it at the winter solstice in late 2000.
Temple Stream: A Rural Odyssey is the story of that quest, interspersed with his personal history, the history of the local settlements, and a Pandora's box of the rich environment around the stream. Roorbach observes the beavers and describes their impact on the stream; consults a field botanist for more detailed understanding of the flora of the region; calls on his lifelong interest in bird-watching; and grows in appreciation of our watery planet through a chance encounter with an elderly hydrologist, found barefoot in a flood pipe with her long skirt rucked up. Local characters and customs are whimsically described, some of them "composites;" I won't meet the Thoreau-quoting giant Earl Pomeroy or the mad house-sitter Mrs. Bollocks on my errands in town but their ways are familiar.
All these characters, all the small renewals of nature, even the birth of Roorbach's daughter are presented in a gentle and contemplative style and loosely marked off by solstice and equinox. There are no real denouements here, but if you've ever lost yourself for a while in a stream and wondered where it's going, this book may bring you some of the pleasure it brought me. If you have any interest in memoirs of rural life, I recommend this book to you.

Field Guide to Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores: Cape Hatteras to the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the Caribbean (Peterson Field Guide Series) ReviewWhere Kaplan's "Coral Reefs" manages to take a difficult field guide topic and conquer it, "Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores" Takes an impossible task and muddles it. I don't know what the people at Peterson's Field Guides was thinking! The topic is far to broad to include in one book, and Kaplan seems to try and make it broader. He includes coral reefs and things distinctly NOT on the shore as well as including topics already in other field guides. I do NOT want to belittle Kaplan (whom I enjoy) or Peterson's (who I think makes the best mass consumption field guides available) but unless you really need it, I would stay away from this book. Condit is not forgiving of the reader-- prepare to learn more than you might have planned about caissons, load-bearing structural systems, windows, etc.-- but on the other hand there's little or no sense of being instructed in "good taste" here, either. Condit makes a plain-speaking argument and provides the information to support it. Those who wish to delve deeper will want to look to Condit's two-volume study of architecture in Chicago, long out of print but still available used. Conifers of the World: The Complete Reference ReviewFirst: This is a fine piece piece of work. Eckenwalder is known and respected throughout North America for his work with conifers, and has devoted many years to the preparation of this, his masterwork. The introductory chapters, accounting for 68 of 720 pages, are especially useful. The chapters on classification and names make a great primer on taxonomy for lay audiences. The chapters on habitat and morphology present excellent information, some of it never before published, on conifer botany. The bulk of the book, pages 69 to 631, addresses the families, genera, and species of conifers. Pretty good keys are presented to enable easy identification. The treatment of each taxon consists of two or three paragraphs that contain information needed for an accurate identification, followed by tidbits on subjects like ecology, uses, etc., but there is no systematic approach to this information. There are a few drawings and maps, many black-and-white photographs, and one section with 65 glossy color photos.
Second: Eckenwalder is a "lumper" and this volume identifies only 550 conifer species. This is 65 species less than in Farjon's superb A Handbook of the World's Conifers, and 100 species less than are recognized by many taxonomists. Each species is treated in rather cursory manner, and in general there is little information on any subject other than identification by means of morphology, which means that you don't actually learn much about these species - their ecology, their importance to people, and their evolution and history remain pretty much a secret. For this reason I am annoyed by the book's subtitle, "A Complete Reference;" it's just not true. I would have subtitled it "a guide to identification" because, for most taxa, that is this volume's primary strength. The black-and-white photographs are mostly not well reproduced and add little to the substance of the book, which is regrettable but probably helped to maintain a reasonable price.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this book for any one who is mainly interested in being able to identify the sort of trees that you are most likely to find in an arboretum. If you are interested in a general introduction to conifers as a group, you would be more happy with another Timber Press publication, A Natural History of Conifers. If you want to know more about the history, ecology, and uses of conifers, you are better off buying books about the species or region that interests you, or else coming up with the dough to purchase A Handbook of the World's Conifers, which addresses these subjects.Conifers of the World: The Complete Reference Overview

Chinese Architecture ReviewThis survey of pre-modern Chinese architecture is very similar to the other books ("Chinese Sculpture" and "Chinese Painting") in the Yale series: it's big and expensive; generously photographed in color; multi-authored; organized by usage type (palace, temple, other) within dynasty; and consists essentially of a parade of individual items (buildings, in this case) with commentary. If that's your thing, then go for it!
The book is very skimpy on technical topics like bracketing, joinery, roofing, and decorations. Its lack of a glossary, and its hit-and-miss index, are additional minuses. There are hardly any architectural drawings. It does have numerous site diagrams, although *none* of them has a distance scale attached.
In short, this book omits an awful lot of needful information, just in order to survey an endless parade of individual buildings. That's why I think it will be more often consulted in a university or public library, than purchased by individuals.Chinese Architecture Overview

Amphibians and Reptiles of Baja California, Including Its Pacific Islands and the Islands in the Sea of Cortés (Organisms and Environments) ReviewFirst, let me say that I have known Lee Grismer for many years and I know the passion he has for the Baja Peninsula and its natural wonders. I have been waiting a long, long time for this book. When I received it, I scanned the book and planned to read it cover to cover when I had the time. In the last weeks, I made the time and have nearly finished this tome.
Dr. Grismer has put his heart and soul into making this book the best herpetological reference on Baja California, bar none. Baja is a mysterious place with many influences flowing into it from the Pacific, the Colorado Desert and mainland México. In this book, Dr. Grismer takes great pains to delineate the geological influences which have helped to shape this strange land and the effects on the herpetology of this 1,000 km long peninsula.
I marvel at the time he has put in studying the many organisms extant on the peninsula and his obviously meticulous note taking. I am in awe of the relationships he has built up with local ranchers and fishermen over the last quarter century. Local people are a great source of information and Lee has used their knowledge and consciousness to build a reference source the likes of which has never before been devoted to a similar chunk of land.
I would love to write more but I feel that the book will speak for itself. It is a great read and not nearly as tedious as other scientific works I have read. Just for its reference value, this book deserves to be on the shelf of any serious student of herpetology.

America's National Wildlife Refuges: A Complete Guide ReviewOverall an excellent guide to our National Wildlife Refuges. Introductory chapters review the NWR history and key conservation issues. Then each of the refuges (over 500 of them) are described, state by state. The descriptions are generally quite thorough and interesting.
The biggest flaw with the book is a total lack of maps to show you where the refuges are located. If the section for each state just had a small map, the reader would instantly be able to visualize the refuge location. Also, the book is divided into "Featured refuges" and "Other refuges", with each section arranged by state. This sometimes makes finding a refuge confusing. It would be simpler if all the refuges for each state were grouped together, rather than in two different locations.
All in all a very good guide; I just wish there were some maps.

There is an impressive amount of interesting information here, and I would even recommend it to professional zoologists/herpetologists. The image quality is also very good overall.
