Lonely Planet Discover Japan (Full Color Country Travel Guide) ReviewI lived in Japan for quite a few years, and while I don't need a travel guide to the country anymore I am always curious on how well new travel guides highlight all the madness and charm that can be found there. Consequently, I own a lot of travel guides to Japan. I have also hosted a lot of visitors in Japan, and have learned over the years what works and what doesn't.
I admit that I have never been a huge fan of the Lonely Planet series, as their books tend to be just lists of places with tongue-in-cheek humor but not a terrible amount of depth. I have the previous Japan (Country Guide) and this "Discover Japan" volume covers much of the same information, only updated with color photographs and some flash and pizzazz.
Right from the start, I had some problems with "Discover Japan." First off, it touts Japan as "one of the cheapest countries in the developed world" which is simply wrong. Japan is incredibly expensive to travel in, with Tokyo being one of the most expensive cities on the planet. Consider that this is a country whose smallest paper currency is equivalent to US $10 (1000 yen), and dollar coins (100 yen) are just chump change. I lived in the Kansai area, which is not as expensive as Tokyo, and even then it was hard to step out your door for less than a hundred dollars a day.
Along with this, it says that Visa and Mastercard are "widely excepted," which is completely untrue and a dangerous thing to say. Japan is an almost entirely cash-based society, and I have had to pay for more than one visitor who blindly ordered at a large restaurant just assuming they could pay with their credit card and being shocked when they are told "cash only." Even the ubiquitous convenience stores don't always take plastic, and the cash machines close at normal bank hours so you have to get used to carrying large sums of cash around with you.
Next, we are presented with a "Japan's Top 25 Experiences" list, with "Kyoto's Temples and Gardens" being in the number one position. (The photo included is actually the Torii path at Fushimi Inari Shrine, made famous in the film Memoirs of a Geisha but located outside of Kyoto city, so don't look for it there.) Probably my number one advice to visitors is "don't waste too much time in Kyoto."
Don't get me wrong, Kyoto has some beautiful areas, but the dreamy city sold to you by guidebooks simply doesn't exist, and those pockets of cherry-blossom lined streets are carefully tucked away in concrete urban sprawl. On top of that, some of Kyoto's most famous buildings, like the Golden Pavilion Kinkakuji, are nothing more than modern replicas of older structures. (The modern Kinkakuji was built in 1955, for example) The nearby Nara Park, on the other hand, with its sprawling wilderness, tame deer than can be hand-fed, and giant Todai-ji temple with the massive Great Buddha statue, is always much more of a crowd pleaser. There is decent coverage of Nara Park in the book, but it deserves more attention than its more famous neighbor Kyoto.
Temples and Shrines are very much the focus of "Discover Japan," and almost every regional chapter highlights the local version. This is the book for what we call the "green tea and onsens" traveler who wants to step back into Japan's past that they see in samurai films rather than the modern country. I love shrines and temples probably even more than the next guy, but every visitor I have had to Japan gets "templed-out" pretty quickly, and has more fun standing in the busy street of Dontonbori Osaka with the mechanical signs waving tentacles at you and pumping out steam and every street hawker shouting for your attention. Yet Dotonbori gets little more than a brief paragraph. I was happy to see the Osaka Aquarium get a mention on the "must see" list, but I have to admit that the Osaka Aquarium is nothing compared to the much-larger Okinawa Aquarium which deserves the spot instead.
There is a lot more that could be done here. For example, every area of Japan has its own regional food which could have been mentioned, or even cool things sake brewery tours or some of Japan's more unique attractions like the Studio Ghibli museum or the Instant Ramen museum or even some of the amazing roller coasters that Japan is famous for like the terrifying Eejanaika "4-D" roller coaster at Fuji-Q Highland amusement park near the base of Mt. Fuji. From reading this "Discover Japan" guidebook, you get the idea that Japan has not changed for a thousand years and you could expect to encounter shaven-headed men walking around in kimono and geta and white-faced geisha blushing around every corner.
The benefits of "Discover Japan" is that the book is really well put-together and visually beautiful. The pages are color coded for easy reference and the full-color pictures make a difference. There is a feature I really enjoyed, where a professional guide from each major region gives their personal "Top Ten" list of what to see. Also, the place names are written in the Japanese language, which is essential as the further you get away from Tokyo the less English-language signs you will see, especially on menus and in train stations.
My favorite Japan guidebook remains Gateway to Japan, which is admittedly out-dated and not ideal for a casual tourist but it is by far the most informative. Some of the local city guides, like Old Kyoto are also worth it and I have found some hidden gems there like the Japanese print dealer Nishiharu. If you plan on stepping into the steaming water of an onsen (and you are a fool to travel all the way to Japan and miss out on that!) then you will need How to Take a Japanese Bath. For visual splendor and to get you excited, the Japan (Eyewitness Travel Guides) is a good investment.
For me, even though it was well designed this "Discover Japan" book was just lacking too much, and only showed one face of the multi-faceted culture of Japan. Anyone planning a trip is better off picking up a few different books and making their own plans rather than following Lonely Planet's pre-set itineraries and experiences.Lonely Planet Discover Japan (Full Color Country Travel Guide) Overview

Yosemite Place Names: The Historic Background of Geographic Names in Yosemite National Park ReviewOne reviewer stated the names were Miwok, but they were actually Paiute. I can understand that people now believe that it was Miwok, but the truth is that the original ihabitants of Yosemite were Paiutes. Lafayette H. Bunnell was the man who tried to transcribe most of the early Native names of the Yosemite area, but they were to hard to translate from Paiute. Bunnell did write that Chief Tenaya's band were Paiutes. Not once did he write they were Miwoks. That was mistakenly written later by those who did not meet the original inhabitants of Yosemite, but met those who followed the soliders and miners, there guides, scouts and workers...the Miwoks. To see the original words try to buy Lafayette H. Bunnell's book the Discovery the Yosemites, 1851. It shows how Bunnell tried to get the original names from Chief Tenaya himself. Chief Tenaya was the founder of the Paiute Colony of Ahwahnee.Yosemite Place Names: The Historic Background of Geographic Names in Yosemite National Park Overview

Field Guide to Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores: Cape Hatteras to the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the Caribbean (Peterson Field Guide Series) ReviewWhere Kaplan's "Coral Reefs" manages to take a difficult field guide topic and conquer it, "Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores" Takes an impossible task and muddles it. I don't know what the people at Peterson's Field Guides was thinking! The topic is far to broad to include in one book, and Kaplan seems to try and make it broader. He includes coral reefs and things distinctly NOT on the shore as well as including topics already in other field guides. I do NOT want to belittle Kaplan (whom I enjoy) or Peterson's (who I think makes the best mass consumption field guides available) but unless you really need it, I would stay away from this book. It does win points for it's illustrations and Kaplan's knowledge and writing style.Field Guide to Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores: Cape Hatteras to the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the Caribbean (Peterson Field Guide Series) Overview

Best Easy Day Hikes Reno (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) ReviewBased on my experience with other books in this series ("Best Easy Day Hikes") I had expected some hikes that would be farther afield, longer, and more extensive. As the trail descriptions make clear, however, some of these trails are simply popular trails in public parks, and extend through suburban subdivisions. I did choose the hike that looked most challenging, the last in the book ("Fay Luther Interpretive Loop"), and was entirely happy with my hike (and I was able to continue much farther in the trail system than this specific hike). I was surprised to find that the trail was (a) better graded and maintained than the book suggested, and (b) much better shaded than the book suggested - which of course is not a bad thing, but just some extra information that I thought others might like to know. The Fay-Luther trail organization provides beautiful printed maps at the trailhead that you can carry with you or view online, which makes the experience all that much better. I'm curious why this book doesn't have any hikes in the Pyramid Lake area, which like the Fay-Luther area is not a long drive from Reno. Are there no trails at Pyramid Lake?Best Easy Day Hikes Reno (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) Overview

Boston's Gardens and Green Spaces ReviewI lived in Boston for more than 10 years, and thought I knew all the best natural spaces to explore, have fun, and relax in. Turns out, I'd only been sticking my toe into a lake that is much broader and deeper than I'd imagined! This is a resource with a compilation of natural places, woods, lakes, farms, parks, etc. that you can't find on the internet--certainly not on one (or ten) sites, and not with the care and design put into this book.
Wish I'd had it long ago, but now I have much to look forward to!

Lonely Planet Chicago Encounter ReviewI bought the Lonely Planet Encounter for New York City, and loved it. So, I decided to buy the Encounter for Chicago for an upcoming buisness trip. While the book lives up to its NYC counterpart in convenient size, easy to read maps, key attractions (and how to get there on public transit), I found the author's tone horribly distracting. He is very condesending of anything "touristy," "middle class," or "consumerist." The author seems to resent even having to mention things tourists might want to see like the Sears Tower or the Magnificent Mile. An entire half-page is devoted to a low income housing development that doesn't even exist anymore. He also wastes space writing about how Chicago is a great city when he could be informing us of what great things are in the city.
So, I would say get this guide as an easy to carry, fast to find what you're looking for guide, but just avoid reading too much of the author's commentary!Lonely Planet Chicago Encounter Overview

Top Trails: Yosemite: Must-Do Hikes for Everyone (Top Trails: Must-Do Hikes) ReviewWilderness Press originally conceived of the 'Top Trails' series as a set of hiking guides to the best trails in an area. This purpose sets these volumes apart from typical hiking guides which tend to fall into two categories: comprehensive guides to all trails in a region, or descriptions of short day hiking opportunities in an area. The idea was to give visitors to a region quick access to the best hiking and to facilitate ease of use. Perhaps no area of California needs a 'Top Trails' guide as much as Yosemite and very few authors are as qualified to write one as Jeffrey Schaffer.
This book is divided into seven chapters: one for each region of the park. Each chapter lists 5 to 8 hikes ranging in distance from the 1/2 mile walk at Bridalveil Falls to a 33 mile excursion among the High Sierra Camps. Obviously, some of these trails are more suitable for backpacking, a feature that distinguishes this book from others in the 'Top Trails' series. All the great hikes are included. Readers will find route descriptions for Half Dome, the Tuolomne Grove of Sequoias (my favorite grove in the park), Clouds Rest, Hetch Hetchy Resevoir, Glacier Point, and many more. In all, there are 45 trails and routes described here.
What makes this book so good are the standard features found in other 'Top Trails' guides and the expert commentary of Schaffer. Each chapter begins with an overview of the region, a trails summary page listing distance, difficulty, and some highlights of the trails, followed by detailed trail descriptions and carefully drawn maps. Schaffer is one of the top cartographers in the west and his maps are second to none. But in addition to these standard features, Schaffer also offers an extended commentary on the geology, geography, and plant and animal communities found in the park. His theory that Yosemite Valley's rock walls were formed by faulting and vertical fracture planes, not solely by glaciers, is explained in these pages, along with the evidence for it, so that non-specialists can easily understand what they observe as they hike. This sort of expert commentary adds immeasurably to the joy of hiking. That is why I strongly recommend this book by Schaffer. It can enhance any vacation to Yosemite.Top Trails: Yosemite: Must-Do Hikes for Everyone (Top Trails: Must-Do Hikes) Overview

Peaceful Places: Chicago: 119 Tranquil Sites in the Windy City and Beyond ReviewThis is a very unusual guide to an urban area, but a valuable one. The author finds serenity in destinations such as at the Bahai Temple, but also in tucked away corners of busy places. Serenity at the Chicago History Museum? Find it at the Chicago Diorama Gallery. At the Field Museum? Go to the Jade Gallery. Some of the choices are known only by immediate neighbors, such as the view of the lake from behind the Evanston Art Center. As very few guides do, this one ranges over the greater Chicago area, from Naperville to the Indiana Dunes. It selects destinations that usually aren't in the same list, such as beaches, harbors, cafes, and farms. If I only had time to visit them all!Peaceful Places: Chicago: 119 Tranquil Sites in the Windy City and Beyond Overview

American Insects: A Handbook of the Insects of America North of Mexico, Second Edition ReviewAs a naturalist and amateur entomologist, I found the first edition of this book especially useful for looking up unfamiliar genera and species of insects, to find out where they fit in the scheme of insect taxonomy.
Unfortunately, CRC Press, the publisher of the second edition, has cut corners by reducing the size of the index from 128 pages for 714 pages of text in the first edition to 57 pages for 931 pages of text in the second edition. This was accomplished by eliminating all but the major genera from the index. In my opinion, this seriously diminishes the value of the book. The best information in the world is useless if you can't access it efficiently. A book like this lives or dies by the quality of its index.
After purchasing the book in early January, 2001 and quickly discovering the problem, I wrote to the publisher to complain and to ask that they make available a complete index as a supplement. I have yet to receive a response from them. The book's author, Ross Arnett, was upset when the publisher of the first edition inadvertently left out the photo captions in proof and wouldn't restore them. I have to think he is spinning in his grave over the gutting of the index in the second edition, a much more serious affair.
I'd love to be able to recommend the second edition of this book. However, unless the publisher remedies the index problem, I can't. Unless you want it primarily for the keys, I suggest looking for a used copy of the first edition.American Insects: A Handbook of the Insects of America North of Mexico, Second Edition Overview

100 Classic Hikes in North Carolina: Coastal Carolina/ Piedmont/ Blue Ridge Parkway/ Pigsah National Forset/ Great Smoky Mountains ReviewI love this book. I have taken 3 hikes in the book and really enjoyed them. I plan on trying all the hikes just to get out and explore North Carolina. Each hike has a brief introduction to the trail and area, then he takes you on the hike, mostly directions of where to go, etc. There is a map of each trail and area but it's not as detailed as the trail map, so you need to pick up a map before you go just to be safe. Each hike also gives you an elevation gain, mileage, difficulty level, and estimated time it should take you.
In the beginning of the book there is a full page spread of NC that shows you where all the hikes are. I use it often to plan my next hike, starting close to my house then I'll get further away. So if you like hiking and want to explore NC, I highly recommend this book.100 Classic Hikes in North Carolina: Coastal Carolina/ Piedmont/ Blue Ridge Parkway/ Pigsah National Forset/ Great Smoky Mountains Overview
