Lonely Planet Chicago Encounter ReviewI bought the Lonely Planet Encounter for New York City, and loved it. So, I decided to buy the Encounter for Chicago for an upcoming buisness trip. While the book lives up to its NYC counterpart in convenient size, easy to read maps, key attractions (and how to get there on public transit), I found the author's tone horribly distracting. He is very condesending of anything "touristy," "middle class," or "consumerist." The author seems to resent even having to mention things tourists might want to see like the Sears Tower or the Magnificent Mile. An entire half-page is devoted to a low income housing development that doesn't even exist anymore. He also wastes space writing about how Chicago is a great city when he could be informing us of what great things are in the city.
So, I would say get this guide as an easy to carry, fast to find what you're looking for guide, but just avoid reading too much of the author's commentary!Lonely Planet Chicago Encounter Overview
