AMC Road Atlas (Road Atlas: United States, Canada, Mexico) ReviewIf you buy only one atlas for driving in the US, buy this one and you won't get lost! My family travels by car quite a bit,all over the US, and I am always the navigator. I have used many atlases until I found the American Map Company atlas, and now I won't use any other. I buy the new edition every year.
Some atlases are very confusing, in city interchanges especially, and this one is very easy to follow. It also shows points of interest in red along the way-- interesting tourist spots, museums,etc., that you may not have known were nearby if you are travelling through several states on vacation like we do. It also has maps of the national parks, which are good for pre-planning a visit. It also shows the location of rest areas on the interstates, which is very important if you have kids with you!!! I also like that it is spiral-bound, so you can just fold it neatly back to only show the map you want.
I have compared this atlas side by side with Rand McNally and others, and it is by far the easiest to read. So get this one before you head out on that cross-country road trip! You won't be sorry.AMC Road Atlas (Road Atlas: United States, Canada, Mexico) Overview

Hannah's House ReviewHANNAH'S HOUSE is a heavy book, both in terms of length (I'm guessing it's about 110,000 words) and heft in the hand. Because it's my habit to read last thing at night before bed, I was reluctant to begin the book, knowing it would take me a month or so to finish it...wrong. My normal 10-15 pages an evening quickly became 30-50 pages. This indicates how absorbed I was by the lives of Iris and Hannah--two protagonists separated in time by over a century but connected by place (the remains of Hannah's late-nineteenth century log dwelling are discovered by Iris behind her own twenty-first century tract house). The two homes meet a similar fate but with radically different outcomes for the women. It is the buildup to the outcome that made this a page-turner for me. Iris, divorced and vaguely involved with a man, is troubled by her grown daughter's distance and reluctance to provide Iris with a phone number or mailing address. Hannah and her mother, on the other hand, live and work together. The mother-daughter relationships explored in this book were intriguing and believable for me (I have a grown daughter). I could feel how Iris was perplexed and hurt by her daughter's choices, and at the same time understood and approved of the daughter's desire to have an independent life. Likewise, Hannah and her mother had a closeness I longed for with my own mother. Allen writes with the strength and clarity of someone born to the pen, and with wry humor when she's in Iris' point of view...a running commentary on life in the new millennium for a single professional woman. Allen's broad knowledge on topics as diverse as forestry, academia, and accelerants made this a particularly enjoyable read for me--I love learning as I'm entertained by a good story. All of it is fascinating, but the figure explaining how the barrier islands form is worth the cost alone. The ibis, once nesting abundantly on Boundary Island, have suddenly and sadly disappeared. 100 Classic Hikes in North Carolina: Coastal Carolina/ Piedmont/ Blue Ridge Parkway/ Pigsah National Forset/ Great Smoky Mountains ReviewI love this book. I have taken 3 hikes in the book and really enjoyed them. I plan on trying all the hikes just to get out and explore North Carolina. Each hike has a brief introduction to the trail and area, then he takes you on the hike, mostly directions of where to go, etc. There is a map of each trail and area but it's not as detailed as the trail map, so you need to pick up a map before you go just to be safe. Each hike also gives you an elevation gain, mileage, difficulty level, and estimated time it should take you.
In the beginning of the book there is a full page spread of NC that shows you where all the hikes are. I use it often to plan my next hike, starting close to my house then I'll get further away.
