The 10 Best of Everything National Parks: 800 Top Picks From Parks Coast to Coast (National Geographic the 10 Best of Everything) ReviewThis book seemed like such a good idea until one starts using it and hitting many frustrating points.
A first glance it gives a decent overview of different aspects of the National Park system and then you realize, that in order to get more information you will have to start consulting other sources.
For example if you read the section on swimming holes it will simply tell you some information, but in no circumstances could you use this as a guide book, even being familiar with Shenandoah I could not picture where some of the trails and spots were from the book's descriptions.
So this might give you ideas on where to go to find its various 10 best everything: wildlife, natural wonders, land, sea, lake excursions, wildflowers, fall foliage, picnic spots, learning experiences, history, sleeping and eating places, places to say "I do", urban and island escapes.
The huge aggravation comes as you read some sections; for example unless you know where the Great Smokey Mountains are, in the many instances it is mentioned, the states it is in are not cited, and for some locations it just says Ohio River, so unless you know where a place like Brandywine Falls or the Cuyahoga Valley is, you are lost until you look it up elsewhere or find it in the back of the book.
Where is Lava Beds National Monument? - no clue is given. Where are the John Day Fossil Beds?
With great expectation I turned to the night skies section... 6 of the 10 have no clue as to what state they are in. There are many instances where pictures or additional information is several pages away from the listing.
This is a more exasperating experience in finding interesting National Park information than it is useful; unless you are already well acquainted with all of them. Mobil Travel Guide 2008 Southern Great Lakes: Illinois - Indiana - Ohio (Forbes Travel Guide Southern Great Lakes) ReviewThis is an example of how the internet and travel information sources directly from service providers have led to the degradation of this once venerable source of travel information. I would rate these guides as useless and will not in the future refer to them.
In this particular case I was fairly well familiar with the area. As a resident of a Chicago suburb I could rate my personal experience with that given in the Guide. In one case, Northbrook, IL, the Guide rated a restaurant with which we are very familiar for a period of over 40 years, only one of two for the town, which is soon to close. Many other suburban towns with excellent facilities were totally ignored. The downstate Illinois listings were totally inadequate. The Chicago listings could be equalled or bettered by purchasing a current issue of Chicago magazine.
I was overcharged by Amazon for this purchase (a billing error ?). To my surprise, however, I received an absolutely fantastic description of everything Iceland has to offer a first-time tourist. The book is packed with dozens of amazing, beautiful photographs that compel you to fly over there as quickly as possible.
The text not only covers a solid description of all the interesting places to visit, but dives into some of the history as well. Most importantly, the author makes available plenty of contact phone numbers and addresses (physical, e-mail, and web) that will help you better plan your trip.

Lonely Planet Taiwan (Lonely Planet Taiwan: Travel Survival Kit) ReviewI couldn't help but feel disapppointed in this book. It really seems to miss the point of foreign travel. For example, in the section on Taipei there are 23 listings for Western restaurants and only 13 for Chinese restaurants. Taipei is one of the best cities in the world for Chinese food, and the writer could only manage 13. This seems terribly unbalanced to me. To make it worse, some of the western restaurants introduced are Planet Hollywood (yeah, I went to Taipei to get the Hollywood experience), TGI Friday's, McDonald's and Subway (which in the author's own words, "needs no introduction" -- my point exactly). I went to Taiwan for the food, so this was a big shortcoming in my point of view. Another point , he only lists two teahouses and both are in (or near) a museum. He gives the excuse that teahouses are always closing all the time (of course that didn't stop him from listing a lot of nightclubs). It just seems like he wasn't interested in researching teahouses. He just couldn't be bothered. Also, he writes very little about the excellent night markets. In fact he devotes an equal amount of space to tell us about food courts. Come on!
It's sad, really. I've used a lot of Lonely Planet guides with good results before, which is why I bought this one without looking at it. However, I can't recommend this one unless your idea of a good vacation in Taipei is eating at TGI Friday's, having coffee at Starbucks, and going to a club (why are you going to Taipei? You can do that at home.) Well, to explain why I gave it two stars instead of one, the transportation and hotel information is useful, so I couldn't bring myself to trash it completely.Lonely Planet Taiwan (Lonely Planet Taiwan: Travel Survival Kit) Overview

I live in New Mexico and we just bought a camper, so I went to the library to get some book on where to go camping. I borrowed a couple of guides for the Southwest, but this book is the only one that anybody ever needs. Every State Park is listed in detail, even little maps for each Park are included. Furthermore they tell you exactly what to expect from each park and what there is to do. Lonely Planet Hiking in the Sierra Nevada (Walking) ReviewThis guidebook really is worthy of the award it won. It describes over 60 hikes in the Sierras the bulk of which are long day hikes or backpack trips. Each route has a topographical map included, detailed descriptions and alternative routes or side trips included. What makes this guide fairly unique are the many (very beautiful) color plates and some wonderful sidebars on local history, including a discussion of arborglyphs left by Basque sheepherders and the fight by the climbing community to save "Camp 4" in Yosemite Valley.
Nonetheless, I cannot give the book 5 stars. There are several minor errors in the book. Arrowheads have not been found atop Mt. Whitney: that is an apocryphal story that dates back to Clarence King. Similarly, the claim that Mt. Rose is the only 10,000 ft. peak with a trail to the summit in the Tahoe area is untrue. The Tahoe Rim Trail goes right over the summit of Relay Peak and this even appears on their own map of the Mt. Rose hike. The main drawback of this book, however, is that it really only covers the popular backcountry hikes in the range. The book lists only 8 hikes in Sequoia and Kings Canyon and these are the premier hiking parks in California. So, while this book is good if you really have no idea of what is available in the Sierras, hikers with some foreknowledge, or those seeking solitude, will need to supplement this book with other sources.Lonely Planet Hiking in the Sierra Nevada (Walking) Overview

Lonely Planet Dominican Republic & Haiti ReviewOnce more, Lonely Planet guidebooks set the standard, in providing essential advice, as well as wonderful insights on many issues, successfully targeting all kinds of travelers. Yet, as any first edition of a travel guidebook, this one could be substantially better than it is now - which, I am sure, will likely be achieved by the time the second edition comes out. Both sections on both countries are very good, though it must be remarked that the section on Haiti is - at least in my view - far less researched and refined than the impressive section on the Dominican Republic. The author of the Haiti section is obviously a real Haiti lover, and she provides plenty of wonderful facts about Haiti's history and present, culture and society, which she is eager to share with her readers. Yet, in my view, she fails to provide the best possible advice for travelers. Coverage on hotels and places to eat, and entertainment in general, is poor. On that, we add the fact that things are changing so rapidly in Haiti, which is beyond her control. The section on the Dominican Republic, in contrast, provides just-about any information and avice a traveler could desire when traveling to the country. Coverage of what to see and do in Santo Domingo, on hotels and restaurants, the many tips on how to behave (do's and dont's) etc, is truly excellent. Rocky Mountain National Park: The Complete Hiking Guide ReviewIn my life, I have literally read hundreds of hiking and climbing guidebooks from around the world. There are two things most of them have in common and are readily apparent. First, the author does not have intimate, first-hand knowledge of every location, every route; relying instead on other's trip reports and descriptions. Second, details important to the reader are brief, missing or just downright incorrect. This makes for a potentially deadly combination when a climber or hiker is facing darkness, dangerous weather conditions and fatigue.
Within Rocky Mountain National Park, an area I have explored and enjoyed over the past 25 years, I have carried and relied heavily upon guidebooks by 'renowned' local authors and on more than several occasions, have faced incredibly frustrating and sometimes harrowing circumstances, quickly coming to the realization the guidebook was worth less than the paper it was printed on.
Then, Lisa Foster entered the picture. Lisa established her credibility, professionalism and attention to detail long before writing this book, as a backcountry adventure columnist for the Estes Park Trail Gazette and as a host/guide in many local television and video productions; aimed at promoting safe and responsible adventure travel in Rocky Mountain National Park. This, coupled with her years of experience as a National Park Service Biological Field Technician, a top-notch alpinist and backcountry explorer, made her the perfect candidate to take on such a formidable challenge-to write a comprehensive guide to every named point in Rocky Mountain National Park as well as several areas on its borders.
Lisa was successful in accomplishing this totally unique objective, I feel, not by her wealth of knowledge nor years of experience as a writer-adventurer, but by her uncontrollable zeal for life and unconditional love of the outdoors; a passion for which I have never seen equaled.
The fruit of Lisa's tireless labor is in an extraordinarily beautiful book, both in appearance and in content. The guide is constructed so that both Park aficionado and newcomer will embrace it and find it an invaluable resource. Its layout is concise, easy to navigate and despite its 400 pages, easy to carry. Lisa's color photos are alluring, inspiring and illustrate the Park's beauty in all four seasons. The historical passages afford the reader a greater appreciation and better understanding of the area than any other reference I have studied.
I've written this not to be flattering nor to help the author sell a million books. My review is directed to you, the person with adventure in your heart, who is intelligent enough to read these reviews, diligent enough to do some research and wise enough to make an informed purchase. In the mountains, there is no room for error...you need to have the very best guidebook available, and this is it.
I live two miles from "Rocky", and thought I knew almost everything about it. Boy, was I wrong. Thanks to Lisa Foster and "Rocky Mountain National Park - The Complete Hiking Guide", I have been given the opportunity to experience this gem of the National Park System in an entirely different light - through Lisa's eyes. I can tell you with all sincerity, the journey so far has been nothing less than magical.

Hiking the Southwest's Canyon Country ReviewThe Mountaineers Books may just be the best publisher of guidebooks for the Southwest currently being published. I realize this is a strong statement, but I have had occasion to use Southwest related guidebooks for years and have found theirs to be absolutely the most informative, accurate and user-friendly of the lot. This third edition of a classic is no exception. The 150-plus hikes, 35 new to this edition, are described in seven chapters ranging from Desert Reef and River Tours, Mesa and Pueblo Tours, to Painted Desert and Canyon Tours and will take the reader from the Colorado Plateau to the Grand Canyon, from Zion and Bryce Canyon National parks to the banks of the Rio Grande, and just about every nook and cranny in between. If it's in the Four Corners region and remotely worth visiting, the chances are it's mentioned in this book. The newly added material on the San Rafael Swell area, as well as the Canyons of the Ancients, indicates the up-to-date status of the material.
I was pleasantly surprised to see a suggested hike in the newly designated Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in New Mexico. I visited the area this past summer and can vouch for the accuracy of the information.
Along with the hiking information there is background material on the region's geology, archeology, climate, flora and fauna there is an index, maps, color and black and white photos, a handy Contact information section for federal, state and local agencies and a suggested Further Readion section.
This is a comprehensive guidebook and trustworthy companion for hikers, backpackers, explorers and adventures of all skill levels seeking to experience the Four Corners region.

Moon Vermont (Moon Handbooks) ReviewThis book is one of many guides about Vermont. I would not rate this one as the "best" guide I've seen, but it is also not the worst. Not enough info on hotels, motels and B and B's, but good suggestions on nice country drives and of course the standard fare on all the "hot" tourist places around Vermont.
It is printed in larger print, so retired RV'ers coming to Vermont during leaf season might want to consider this book as their primary guide. After all, since they are driving an RV they won't need motel info anyway so this book will give them more of what they are looking for without having to sort through info that would seem irrelevant to an RVer anyway.

Scenic Driving New England ReviewIn 320 pages and 28 scenic drives Stewart Green leaves no stone (or should I say rock) unturned in describing each drive.
With this book, you'll not only get directions from one town to another along the route but everything that's in-between, and a fair dose of area history and stories. Stewart takes his role seriously in being your guide, and not just a "tour driver" regurgitating memorized facts.
I'm very familiar with many of the drives he describes and confess to discovering places and information even new to me.
This isn't a book to read cover to cover in one sitting. It's too dense, and the drives are much too varied as well. My suggestion is to have an idea where you'll visit and then read those scenic drives related to those areas. It'll provide insights and planning material for your trip as well.
The smaller format of the book begs for it to be taken on each trip with you. Many of the pages in my copy quickly became "dog-eared" and full of sticky notes.
I was a little disappointed with many of the pictures in my paperback edition. I found myself staring at photos of non-descript riverbeds with rocks. I'm sure in full color and glossy format they looked great, but in black and white on non-glossy paper many looked flat and over-indulgent.
But I didn't purchase the book for the photography.
If you're looking for a New England scenic drive book with all the directions and details to make sure you don't miss a thing along the way, then look no further than this book.Scenic Driving New England Overview

Frommer's Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard 2011 (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewI bought this at the last minute when I realized the people I was going with hadn't been there in 10-20 yrs! I benefitted from the restaurant reviews & detailed descriptions of several towns, with accompanying one-page maps for most of them AND: a pull-out map (main reason I bought the book!) that had at least the major highways numbered for the whole Cape (although some were shown but were not numbered which was confusing!) and included lighthouses, ferry routes and beaches.
I've used Frommer's books for other trips and have been pleased as well.
I supplement all my travel guides with a look at TripAdvisor.com because (contrary to what Arthur Frommer says) I value opinions from travelers like me and if you use some common sense when evaluating the legitimacy of the reviews, the reward is there. By looking at TA, I compared the reviews to those in this book and they proved to be spot on. Also, I found several great restaurants (& not new ones, either) that were totally omitted from this book...or I would give the Frommer's 5*'s.

Lonely Planet New England (Regional Guide) ReviewI have the 2008 edition of this guide book. As a lonely planet guidebook, it is not very good. As a guidebook in general, it is not the worst.
I have frequently used lonely planet guides in the past when traveling and have generally liked them but this one is lacking. As several other reviewers have mentioned, the hotels, places and even towns mentioned are predictable. Also, unlike most lonely planet guides, this one is not geared to the budget traveler or backpacker at all unless you consider a hotel around $150 to be "budget". Certainly, the writers could have done more research to seek out unique places to stay. If I wanted a travel book written for my parents, I would buy Frommers. This is practically the same thing. This book is good if you are driving through somewhere for a few hours and need a place (restaurant/pub) to stop and don't know the town at all. For instance, it pointed us to an excellent pub with lots of microbreweries in Portland, Maine that we otherwise would not have found since we were just passing through. But any guide should be able to do the same thing. Overall, the writing does not add much general insight to the regions being reviewed nor does it point out many unusual finds or destinations. Fodor's In Focus Cayman Islands, 2nd Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) ReviewI had an old book for Grand Cayman but wanted a newer version. This book was just published in 2011 so it was perfect. The book was great and gave a nice overall of the island. It has plenty of maps and reviews and suggestions of where you can visit during your trip. The restaraunt section and beaches section are especially nice. My book is already filled with book markers so I can pull it out and reference it while we are there. I would highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to Grand Cayman. Moon New England Hiking: The Complete Guide to More Than 400 of the Best Hikes in New England (Moon Outdoors) ReviewThis is an excellent guide. All the classic hikes are in there. The best part is that all the hikes are rated, and I have found that they are very accurately rated for both difficulty and scenic value.
There are no hiking maps in the book though, so be warned about that. For about 300 of the 400 trails, that's totally fine and you likely will not get lost. You should get a separate map for any of the longer-distance or above-treeline hikes. I highly recommend buying a separate map for the White Mountains and another for Acadia National Park.
Get out and enjoy this gorgeous region!

Backroads of New England: Your Guide To New England's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures ReviewWhen fall comes in New England, the trees turn into a splendid mass of reds, oranges and yellows that temporarily distract us from the coming winter. At the same time, the first fresh snowfalls have a special beauty that New Englanders love as well. But the first blush of spring causes a special joy to burst out from our hearts. In the lazy days of summer, we love to watch the wind blow the grasses and trees from languid poses.
At any one of those times, I find myself thinking how much fun it would be to see some new sights in the context of those favorite New England conditions. In the forty years I've lived in New England, I've found many of my favorite locations purely by accident. The back roads are always the best. But I don't have the time to randomly drive all the back roads to find the best ones.
That's where Backroads of New England comes in. Kim Knox Beckius has found 30 delightful drives over back road that mix scenery, history, culture and just plain fun. I have taken about half of the drives in the book, so I can swear by those. I am looking forward to doing the rest now that I know where to go.
How can I tell I would like the others? First, Ms. Beckius provides helpful essays about where to begin, what to see, and what to stop and do along the way. She even includes some suggestions for hiking to beautiful waterfalls. Second, William H. Johnson's gorgeous photographs colorfully illuminate the main sights for each drive. Whether you love covered bridges, snow-capped peaks, delightful streams, pounding surf, or mysterious vistas, you can page through the book to find the places that speak mostly fervently to your soul.
The book is also organized by state. So if you are planning to go just to Maine and arrive by air in Portland, you can simply focus on the Maine trips and those in New Hampshire and northeast Massachusetts that are not too far away. If you live in New York, and want to drive for no more than two hours, you can focus on that radius in western Connecticut and Massachusetts.
I have been looking at travel guides for New England for many years. I've never seen a finer one for back roads adventures.
