Inexpensive as it is, it gives a nice overview of the trails complete with fold out maps. Mountain Biking Michigan: The Best Trails in the Upper Peninsula (Mountain Biking Michigan's Best Trails) ReviewI've wanted to go mountain biking in the Upper Peninsula for a long time, but didn't know where to go until Mike McLelland's book came along.
With his book I was able to plan a seven-day vacation this summer (1998) and tour the U.P. with a couple of buddies. We went up to the Marquette/Munising area and spent a few days on Bruno's Run, McKeever Hills and Grand Island. Awesome trails!!!!
Then we headed west and went on the Ge-che trail and got into some hardcore downhill action at the Copper peak bike park. The chairlifts make short work of some otherwise gnarly uphills. Then your on the top and fly, baby, fly!!!!!
We had a great trip on some of the best trails this mitten state has to offer. I'm planning to bring my girlfriend up there this fall or next year. She's not as hardcore as I am, but Mike's book has trails for everyone's level. I'm planning a different trip for me and her.
Another good thing about the book was the maps and descriptions. I could rule out the trails that didn't sound good to me, and knew what to expect once out on the trail like rocks, water, hills, etc. Another good thing was its size. I put mine in my backpack to use as a reference on the trail.

Hiking Acadia National Park (Regional Hiking Series) ReviewThis is an invaluable guidebook for hikers at Acadia National Park. Our family -- including children ages 12, 9 and 3 -- visited Acadia for four days this summer and used this book to select a variety of trails. The authors describe the grade, distance, degree of difficulty and sights of nearly 150 miles of trails. Following their advice, we went along the Wonderland Trail to an enormous tidal pool, and chose the most appropriate route for our group up 1,200-foot Penobscot Mountain; there are many trails to the top of the mountain, and the book helped us choose the right one for our skill and fitness level. The older two children and one parent also climbed the cliffs of the Beehive; it's rightly described as a strenuous trail, but if you're not afraid of heights, the view of the coast is spectacular and the taste of wild blueberries at the top makes it special. (This hike is listed as one of the authors' favorites.) We found the book extremely useful. The book would also be useful for more experienced hikers; the authors have been on all of the park's trails, in all kinds of conditions. And the book fits neatly in a backpack, for handy reference in case you need to check the maps while hiking. Highly recommended.Hiking Acadia National Park (Regional Hiking Series) Overview

Frommer's Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard 2011 (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewI bought this at the last minute when I realized the people I was going with hadn't been there in 10-20 yrs! I benefitted from the restaurant reviews & detailed descriptions of several towns, with accompanying one-page maps for most of them AND: a pull-out map (main reason I bought the book!) that had at least the major highways numbered for the whole Cape (although some were shown but were not numbered which was confusing!) and included lighthouses, ferry routes and beaches.
I've used Frommer's books for other trips and have been pleased as well.
I supplement all my travel guides with a look at TripAdvisor.com because (contrary to what Arthur Frommer says) I value opinions from travelers like me and if you use some common sense when evaluating the legitimacy of the reviews, the reward is there. By looking at TA, I compared the reviews to those in this book and they proved to be spot on. Also, I found several great restaurants (& not new ones, either) that were totally omitted from this book...or I would give the Frommer's 5*'s.

Best Hikes Near Chicago (Best Hikes Near Series) ReviewWe have lived on the north shore of Chicago for 30 years and driven by many of the hiking locations but never stopped to enjoy them. We have a lab named Murphy and wanted some information about new adventures we could have with him. This book lays out lovely hiking spots many of which are within a half hours drive of our home. We are able to check before we leave the house to see if the location allows dogs. That is a big help. The individual descriptions of the trails is also very helpful. As members of the nearly retired generation we are not looking for difficult hikes but of course this is Illinois so the topography is quite gentle. Never-the-less we were very pleased to find some elevations changes on our first hiking adventure. The trail was exactly as described in the book and so we were prepared...

Due to rapid development in the suburbs around Boston, I know of at least two excellent trails that are now, no longer rideable. We were delighted with all of the recommendations. Though we stayed in Hyannis we traveled and visited towns across the Cape and took a day trip to Nantuckett. We visited several (4-5) 'Fodor's Choice' restaurants of various price levels and were delighted with what we found! We also tried out several beaches based on Fodor's recomendations and our four year old had an excellent time.
