Catskill Summer Things ReviewPete Senterman's book shows that he's well acquainted with the area's peaks, trails, rivers and lakes, and he shares that knowledge with the reader wishing to sample the Catskills experience. It serves as a good quality introduction to what the Catskills has to offer the outdoorsman. There are plenty of activities here to keep somebody busy for at least one or two summer seasons.
The book covers a good variety of venues, ranging from family walks, day hikes and bicycling excursions to adventures on the water. There are succinct black and white, pen and ink maps that show the roads, trails, streams and lakes discussed in the book. Most of the activity descriptions offer good road directions and information on parking. Mr. Senterman also suggests additional reading for those who want additional details and adventures.
I just bought the book a month ago, and used it last week on my seventh week-long summer trip to the area. We did the Red Hill hike, located NE of Grahamsville near the Rondout Reservoir, to enjoy the view from the fire tower. Mr. Senterman classified this as a good hike for a family. I only had my two oldest boys with me (16 and 15), and we all agreed that this would not be a hike appropriate for smaller children. The trail to Red Hill is nearly all uphill, quite rocky/"rooty", and in a couple of places quite steep, not really suited to young kids unless you want to wind up carrying them. Also, it would have been helpful to indicate that the parking area was at the bottom of the hill along the steep dirt approach road, and that it's an official NYS parking lot. We wound up parking at the split of the public and private roads, at the top of the hill.
My one other complaint about the book is the lack of an overall Catskills area map to give geographic context to the suggested activities. I had to constantly look up where each hike was located on another map to figure out how far away they were from where we were staying, nearing Wurtsboro.
Overall, this is a very good book, that could use some improvement by adding a regional map and some refinement to the directions and parking area descriptions. I'll be using it many times.Catskill Summer Things Overview

Hike Alabama: An Atlas of Alabama's Greateast Hiking Adventures (Hike America Series) ReviewThe state of Alabama is a natural wonder. From clear gulf waters kissed by blindingly beautiful white sand beaches, to rugged canyons and graceful mountains, Alabama truly has it all. Joe Cuhaj's book "Hike America: Alabama," covers enough trailblazing experiences in this well written and easy to follow guidebook to last a lifetime. The maps are clearly drawn and the text contains a wealth of information on everything from the local flora and fauna to the best restaurants in the area. Particularily nice are the individual hike profile maps, side elevation of the trail that can tell the novice more about the roughness of the terrain in a glance than squinting at a contour map all day. This is not the first book on hiking Alabama trails that I have bought, but it is by far the best.Hike Alabama: An Atlas of Alabama's Greateast Hiking Adventures (Hike America Series) Overview

Best Easy Day Hikes Adirondacks (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) ReviewThe selection of trails is nicely varied, both in scenery and difficulty. But, like all books of this general type, too must attention is paid to the high peaks region, while trails in the southern half of the Daks, which is the better commute for most people, are lacking. The addition of GPS data is a good help in locationg the trail heads, as that is often the hardest part of the trip.Best Easy Day Hikes Adirondacks (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) Overview

Portland City Walks: Twenty Explorations In and Around Town ReviewMuch like her earlier book, Portland Hill Walks, this is much more than a list of scenic strolls through Portland and its suburbs. She gives an amazing amount of detail on the history of the locations, architecture of its buildings, and other interesting bits of trivia that even us locals don't know! She will even get down to the history behind a single house which might otherwise not even be noticed while walking by it.
Even better, without the hills these walks are more accessible to beginners.

Best Hikes Near New York City (Best Hikes Near Series) ReviewThis book was published just in time for the start of optimal hiking weather in New York. I'm an amateur hiker (if even that), and this guide is perfect. It's well organized (with hikes rated by difficulty -- easy for me, thanks), with just the right amount of information: maps, GPS coordinates, brief histories of the trail, photos, and one-page hike-spec boxes that include directions and trail contact info. This isn't a dry ol' hiking guide; the different hike descriptions are actually engaging and fun. Who knew that awesome hikes are just a subway ride away?! I can't wait to dog-ear this book and hike out of the city!Best Hikes Near New York City (Best Hikes Near Series) Overview

AMC's Best Day Hikes Near New York City: Four-season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey ReviewFull disclosure -- I am the author's brother. That said, I genuinely enjoyed this book, and more importantly, have used it in planning local hikes for my two boys (ages six and three). The write-ups go beyond "follow the path for three miles and turn left at the bridge by the stream," as many guide books do. Readers get wonderful context to help enjoy an excellent selection of local hikes -- a great antidote for those of us in the NYC metro area who feel like there is no outdoors left. There is -- you just have to know where to go to find it. An easy exercise with this book.AMC's Best Day Hikes Near New York City: Four-season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey Overview

Best Hikes Near Chicago (Best Hikes Near Series) ReviewWe have lived on the north shore of Chicago for 30 years and driven by many of the hiking locations but never stopped to enjoy them. We have a lab named Murphy and wanted some information about new adventures we could have with him. This book lays out lovely hiking spots many of which are within a half hours drive of our home. We are able to check before we leave the house to see if the location allows dogs. That is a big help. The individual descriptions of the trails is also very helpful. As members of the nearly retired generation we are not looking for difficult hikes but of course this is Illinois so the topography is quite gentle. Never-the-less we were very pleased to find some elevations changes on our first hiking adventure. The trail was exactly as described in the book and so we were prepared...
I would recommend this book to dog owners...for sure.Best Hikes Near Chicago (Best Hikes Near Series) Overview

Afoot and Afield: San Diego County: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide ReviewJerry Schad is a remarkably prolific outdoor author. He has written extensively on hiking in southern California including the wildlands within Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. But San Diego is where Schad's heart truly lies and it shows in every edition of 'Afoot and Afield San Diego.' I have owned each one since the first in 1986 and this book just keeps getting better and better. The 4th edition (2007) features over 250 hikes and is sure to keep outdoor enthusiasts busy.
Most of the 30 or so hikes new to this edition are in the chapters dealing with Beaches and Bays and the Coastal Strip/Foothills sections. In the last 20 years San Diego County has made remarkable progress at putting aside open space for recreation and this version of Afoot and Afield chronicles many new preserves that have appeared over the last decade. New hikes include the Hosp Grove, a walk among Eucalyptus Trees just south of Oceanside, the addition of three new routes in Mission Trails Regional Park (along with the banishment of one path up Cowles Mountain), and multiple new trails in the Alpine/Jamal area.
While urbanized areas have seen many changes, the mountain and desert portions of the book are similar to previous editions. In Rancho Cuyamaca State Park, only one new hike was added, a pleasant jaunt along Cuyamaca Reservoir. Sadly, although the book has not changed much, the surrounding mountain landscape has. The 2003 Cedar fires destroyed much of the park and Schad's assessment that it will recover in a decade or two seems highly unlikely. As an aside, I was disappointed that Schad repeated the park claim and attributed the fire to "a century of fire suppression." That was, of course, part of the problem. But rampant mismanagement by the state park also shares the blame. Thinning, controlled burns, and spraying for bark beetles would have done much to mitigate the 2003 catastrophe. Happily, Palomar Mountain State Park has learned from the disaster that overtook Rancho Cuyamaca and is returning to active management of its resources, beginning with clearing away brush and downed wood. Because of this careful management, the many beautiful trails and cross country routes Schad describes on Palomar will be safeguarded for generations to come.
In conclusion, this is a very good guidebook. It retains most of the best features of earlier guides and all of the best hikes. I miss the little icons that appeared in previous editions, but the heading for each hike provides all the information you need in a concise, readable format. The trail sketch maps are also for the most part adequate, but you will want to supplement these with more detailed recreational maps where available. Still, this is the most comprehensive guide to San Diego County, a four season outdoor wonderland. If you want to explore the region, you would do well to get this book.Afoot and Afield: San Diego County: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide Overview

The Appalachian Trail--Onward to Katahdin ReviewThe author showed a tendancy for too much self-pity in his first book (based on the first half of his AT hike), but in this one he lies down in the middle of the trail and wallows in it. Curran approaches things in a way that is rational, carefully thought out, even scientific. The essence of this book is his efforts to apply this method to figuring out his relationship with God. It's a bit like trying to paint a cloud.
For those interested in the actual hiking itself, Curran comes off as a bit too harsh in his judgments of people and businesses he encounters along the way. His comments hint that he often doesn't feel properly respected or treated. I wonder if it has something to do with his being a retired Army colonel, and if he realizes that the world doesn't know or even care about that.
Not enough real substance here for my taste. The Appalachian Trail--Onward to Katahdin Overview

Hiking New Jersey: A Guide to 50 of the Garden State's Greatest Hiking Adventures (State Hiking Guides Series) ReviewThis fine collection of hikes in New Jersey covers a fair sampling of outdoor treasures from all over the state. I purchased both the hard copy and the Kindle versions, and this Review discusses first the book and then using the guide in the Kindle version.
The hard copy version is a classic hiking guide, produced on good paper with colored covers and well bound. The extract provided on the "Look Inside" feature here on Amazon is a fair representation of the description of each hike: details of length and difficulty, directions to trail head, other users, dogs allowed, a simple map, and historical or environmental items of interest. There is a very useful discussion of hiking in the state generally, a suggestion to purchase more detailed maps, especially from the New York New Jersey Trail Conference (see first Comment), checklists of items to carry, a short but good bibliography, and a list of additional sources of information, primarily online.
The only criticism that occurs to me is that there is no GPS data for any of the hikes, but that data is not essential to the occasional hiker. On balance, this is a five star hiking and walking guide for New Jersey.
As an experiment, I purchased both the hard copy and downloaded the Kindle version, in the latter case to a Kindle 2, the Kindle PC and the Kindle iPhone app. I was particularly interested in how the Kindle version would work in practice. (I confess I've loved using paper guide books for over 40 years, and this version is perfectly acceptable for trail purposes; about a pound in weight, easy to carry and use even in wet weather (encased in a Ziplock bag), wide margins for writing, easily Xeroxable for even less weight, in short the classic hiker's approach.)
The Kindle version of the text is generally identical to the hard copy except that formatting is simplified in the Kindle version - double columns and inserts in the hard copy are converted to a single column text in the Kindle version. One troubling difference: a number of capital letters appear in lower case in the Kindle version, suggesting that there may be other typographical errors. My sampling proof reading didn't turn up any, but my sample was only 5% of the trail descriptions.
I used the guidebook on two hikes carrying my Kindle, and things went pretty well -- the text was perfectly visible but it is not possible to blow up the maps or the charts in the same way you can the text, the Kindle is a quarter the weight of the book, but costs 15 times as much and is pretty fragile. Ziplock pages protected it perfectly without affecting visibility or using the toggle or the keys -- however, protecting it from dings and dongs in the field is problematic -- my heavy duty carrying case brought the weight up to about the same weight as the book.
I considered taking the Kindle version on a third hike loaded onto a small HP computer, about 20 the cost of the book, and easily three times the weight including protective covering. The Kindle software is free and although there is less functionality on the PC than on the Kindle, the speed, the color pictures, back lighting and clearer text make this a real option to carrying the Kindle -- but ...
The Kindle app on the iPhone was an absolute triumph. The colored pictures appeared in full color; the text was crisp and easily readable, the ebook is stored on the iPhone so that it could be read even when there was no service (because of looming rock walls or high power lines), the maps were easily scalable using the pinch and pull features, making it easy to figure out small details of complex trail connections, and there is no additional weight - as a lone hiker by preference, I always carry a cell phone for security.
In addition, there are an enormous number of other apps for the iPhone that enhance the hiking experience: a compass, a fairly good GPS co-ordinator, a follow the crumbs back track, a flashlight, a notebook, Google Books and more to the point Google maps, and I'm sure many additional apps that I'll discover over time.
One small nuisance: I always carry a Xerox copy of my trail descriptions in addition to any maps and guide books. I've discovered a fairly cumbersome way of getting that bit of redundant security: make a screen shot of the page from the PC version of the guidebook, store that on my computer, then print the image. A better techie can undoubtedly describe how to do that step by step, and my son has offered to do so for me as a Christmas present. (I'll post the steps in a Comment in due course.)
In any event, much as I love hard copy guide books, my iPhone version is a real contender. I'll carry hard copy and iPhone versions for a few more hikes but my guess is that I'm already a convert to ebook hiking guide books. At least on the iPhone.
Robert C. Ross 2009
Addendum: After almost two months and four more hikes, I'm a convert to the iPhone version of hiking guide books, if they are available in that format. One pleasant discovery: it's great fun to read about new hikes (or treasure old) ones in the odd moments -- waiting in line, on the train, where ever I may be -- the cell phone is always with me -- and so are the hikes.

Five-Star Trails in the Adirondacks: A Guide to the Most Beautiful Hikes ReviewThis book made the difference between an OK vacation and a great vacation. The selection of the best hikes meant that we concentrated all our time on the best hikes in the area at the levels we were comfortable with . They have preselected and catalogued all the best areas to hike. They rated the hikes based on scenery, difficulty, children, and solitude The directions were easy to follow---and we wouldn't have found at least one of the best trailheads without their directions. The only caveat I have is that their idea of a "moderate to difficult" hike and mine is not the same----forget the moderate. We paired this with a book about Adirondack Waterfalls and were able to further select hikes to include interesting waterfalls.Adirondack Waterfall Guide: New York's Cool CascadesFive-Star Trails in the Adirondacks: A Guide to the Most Beautiful Hikes Overview

60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Diego: Including North, South and East Counties ReviewThe author of this guide has put together a sensory smorgasbord for anyone who loves the outdoors. She details the flowers and plants you'll see (no more do you have to wonder what that fuzzy gray-green plant is, she tells you!), birds and other wildlife, challenges of the terrain, and where to find a spectacular view. Cross-referenced lists help you choose which hike to do (or helps you prioritize--I want to do all of them!) Best of all, she covers the damage from the 2003 wildfires around San Diego, so the book is way ahead of other guides right now. This guide took this New Englander from "Man, southern California is so dry" to amazement at the variety the San Diego area has to offer, from coastline to forest to mountains.60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Diego: Including North, South and East Counties Overview

60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Chicago: Including Aurora, Northwest Indiana, and Waukegan ReviewThe title of the book caught my eye, and the book itself more than lived up to it! I live in downtown Chicago and was looking for hikes that could be done as day trips - the 60 hikes included are within this distance. The book makes it easy to search by type - for example, river hikes, lake hikes, hikes for wildlife viewing, hikes with children, and then also by distance (1-3 miles, 3-6 miles, and 6+ miles). Each hike has a trail map, directions, a full description, and key info at a glance (e.g. length, configuration, difficulty, scenery, facilities, and even exposure - shady, sunny etc.).60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Chicago: Including Aurora, Northwest Indiana, and Waukegan Overview
