Boundary Waters Canoe Area ReviewI have frequently recommended this book for anyone who is considering a trip in this region. His descriptions of the diverse routes are clear, accurate (we've made many of the trips ourselves), and very helpful in getting a sense of the region. In addition, he includes basic information (climate, map needs, entry points, etc.) that make this an invaluable source of informationBoundary Waters Canoe Area Overview

Catskill Summer Things ReviewPete Senterman's book shows that he's well acquainted with the area's peaks, trails, rivers and lakes, and he shares that knowledge with the reader wishing to sample the Catskills experience. It serves as a good quality introduction to what the Catskills has to offer the outdoorsman. There are plenty of activities here to keep somebody busy for at least one or two summer seasons.
The book covers a good variety of venues, ranging from family walks, day hikes and bicycling excursions to adventures on the water. There are succinct black and white, pen and ink maps that show the roads, trails, streams and lakes discussed in the book. Most of the activity descriptions offer good road directions and information on parking. Mr. Senterman also suggests additional reading for those who want additional details and adventures.
I just bought the book a month ago, and used it last week on my seventh week-long summer trip to the area. We did the Red Hill hike, located NE of Grahamsville near the Rondout Reservoir, to enjoy the view from the fire tower. Mr. Senterman classified this as a good hike for a family. I only had my two oldest boys with me (16 and 15), and we all agreed that this would not be a hike appropriate for smaller children. The trail to Red Hill is nearly all uphill, quite rocky/"rooty", and in a couple of places quite steep, not really suited to young kids unless you want to wind up carrying them. Also, it would have been helpful to indicate that the parking area was at the bottom of the hill along the steep dirt approach road, and that it's an official NYS parking lot. We wound up parking at the split of the public and private roads, at the top of the hill.
My one other complaint about the book is the lack of an overall Catskills area map to give geographic context to the suggested activities. I had to constantly look up where each hike was located on another map to figure out how far away they were from where we were staying, nearing Wurtsboro.
Overall, this is a very good book, that could use some improvement by adding a regional map and some refinement to the directions and parking area descriptions. I'll be using it many times.Catskill Summer Things Overview

Quetico: Near to Nature's Heart ReviewI first paddled into Quetico Park, north of Minnesota's BWCA, when I was at camp before 9th grade. In the many years since then I have returned to this Ontario Park as it is truly as Jon Nelson describes 'Nature's Heart'. Nelson's book takes the reader back to Ice Age formations and the earliest inhabitants, on through first nations guardians of the land, voyageurs and those of us who paddle and portage into the home of current dwellers including 4 leggeds, those who crawl, swim and fly. Quetico- Near to Nature's Heart is a beautiful, informative and exciting read. This is my gift to friends and family this year for Christmas! I know that many of my friends have not been in Quetico Park but the rich and powerful view of North America's land and people is insightful to all of us who want to move beyond driving the freeways to experiencing the land, lichens, loons and the spirituality of our land.

Sea Kayaking along the New England Coast, 2nd ReviewA delightful collection of ocean kayaking trips along the entire New England coast, from Maine to Connecticut. The book describes more than 30 trips in detail: put-in spots, suggested route, possible lunch spots, scenery, caution areas, campsites, and local-knowledge items such as what tide is required for a passage, plus post-paddling eating establishments. Venn covers both day trips and multi-day camping expeditions. The author has clearly done her research in planning each trip, incorporating her own knowledge and experience with that of local paddlers who have done these trips for years. Venn's style is easy to read and follow, and if you have a navigational chart of the area it is very easy to map her suggested route using her text descriptions and the maps provided. The introduction contains very brief overviews of such general topics as equipment, navigation, and rescues, but because of the limited space delegated them, these topics are best covered elsewhere. Overall, this is an immensely useful book with enough detail so you know what to expect before you drive to the boat launch. If you live in New England, I highly recommend it.Sea Kayaking along the New England Coast, 2nd Overview

River Journey ReviewClarence Jonk's classic book is the story of a poor but idealistic young man and his adventures of living on the Mississippi River on a home-made houseboat during the Great Depression. Originally published in 1964, it has been re-released in 2003.
There is something about living by a big river that makes one wonder what the river leads to. It turns out that the destination is not so much a place as a state of mind. The power and magic of the river are transformative and when your journey is over you are better for it. I think that the same can be said for Clarence Jonk's River Journey - if you read it you will be better for it.River Journey Overview

Campfires and Loon Calls: Travels in the Boundary Waters ReviewI enjoyed this book, and learned some helpful canoe-camping tips. I'm planning our first-ever Boundary Waters trip so I'm reading several books. This is not the very best "how-to" Boundary Waters book (Michael Furtman's Canoe Country Camping is more comprehensive), but this book is worth the money and I'm glad I bought and read it. Do not expect this book to suggest routes or include maps, it's not a route book. Instead, the author describes his experiences canoe-camping with his son over the years, and he provides helpful advice and dos-and-don'ts, things to bring and things to leave. Lots of black&white photos. Author's description of rough water, leaky tents, and camping in rain are particularly informative for first-timers.Campfires and Loon Calls: Travels in the Boundary Waters Overview

Quiet Water Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, 2nd: Canoe and Kayak Guide (AMC Quiet Water Series) Reviewwe live in broad brook, connecticut and this is the first year we've had kayaks. in the early summer we met a woman on the scantic river near the somersville dam and she recommended this book. best tip of the year. there are so many great paddles in here that you'd never know about just by looking on a map. we'd been driving around, shooting in the dark, and mostly being disappointed by what we found. every paddle we've taken out of the book has been excellent. can't recommend it highly enough.Quiet Water Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, 2nd: Canoe and Kayak Guide (AMC Quiet Water Series) Overview

Paddling Pennsylvania: Kayaking and Canoeing the Keystone State's Rivers and Lakes ReviewI now understand why it has taken so long for a book on this subject to be published; it is simply a monumental undertaking, and Mr. Mitchell is to be congratulated for his effort. As he mentions in his introduction, PA has 'more waterway miles than any state except Alaska'. The real challenge in writing this book was deciding where to draw the line in the scope of what it would cover, and do it in such a way that the information would stay useful for a reasonable period of time.

"The Guide focuses primarily on sizeable flatwater rivers and streams...'this is not a guide to whitewater rivers and creeks'. Industrialized rivers, or those open to heavy commercial traffic are not included.

"There are 211 separate excursions described in the book, organized by watersheds. At the beginning of each section there is a watershed map showing all the trips described. Each individual trip includes a 'thumbnail' map showing access points. A data table for each trip shows pertinent USGS gages with suggested minimum levels, and a maximum recommended level where it applies; difficulty rating; hazards; scenery rating; notes on fishing and camping, with a narrative.

"Each description is designed to give the reader an overview, and a fair sense of what may be expected from the experience. It lacks exhaustive detail, but it is certainly more than adequate and will whet your appetite for exploring beyond your [geographical] comfort zone. This, coupled with a PA Gazetteer and maybe a AAA TourBook will put you well on your way to enjoying many new adventures on our state's waters."Paddling Pennsylvania: Kayaking and Canoeing the Keystone State's Rivers and Lakes Overview

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Western Region ReviewThe latest edition is a step backward in quality in my opinion.
I am nostalgic to be sure. That alone I am sure creates bias in my review. I still have the canvas #3Duluth Pack with the rugged leather straps from my teen years. It has a slight musty scent and one can still smell the leather to this day. There is perhaps a hint as well of a campfire when one breathes deep. And, unlike me, it still has retained its strength over all these years. Every time I pull the pack off the shelf and inhale; I am reminded of some of my fondest memories.
The same sentiment is true for my collection of Beymer BWCA guidebooks. Over the years I have spent hours paging through the various routes. With the help of Beymer's books I have lead scores of youth and adults on myriad trips through the BWCA over the last two decades. Through his books, Robert Beymer, has been a true friend.
Part of the fun was in the planning. I loved reading through the routes and tracing them out on the PREVOIUSLY INCLUDED 21x14 inch map that was provided in the prior editions. The map was just the right size to get a flavor of the route. The new book has essentially a worthless map printed in the pages at the beginning of the book.
This new edition may have a few new updates, but has lost the charm.
Here is what I miss:
-The separate map.
-The bold font of the lake & river names in the route descriptions. That was nice to help quickly trace out a route. IT MAY SOUND TRIVIAL, BUT THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR DID THAT FOR A REASON!
-The glossy pages of photos. The rare photos in this latest addition are "blah" and unappealing.
-The slightly slimmer field book profile. The earlier editions slipped nicely into a vest pocket. I always took the Beymer guide on every trip in case a route deviation ensued.
- The cover. Although not hardbound, the previous editions had a sturdier cover that could stand a few water splashes.
-Popularity rankings. I actually found the rankings a way to avoid the more "popular" routes. Some folks gravitate to the more popular entry points thinking them the "best"; others (like me) found the rankings a way to avoid a bunch of traffic. When I read, "readers can build their own personal popularity rankings", I saw it as a copout for not wanting to review the data. It is certainly not useful advice for the BWCA neophyte.
Ultimately, I am sure many a coureur du bois will continue to find these books quite worthy, but for those that have the older editions - the lack of quality may be a bit of a letdown.Boundary Waters Canoe Area Western Region Overview
