Hike Alabama: An Atlas of Alabama's Greateast Hiking Adventures (Hike America Series) ReviewThe state of Alabama is a natural wonder. From clear gulf waters kissed by blindingly beautiful white sand beaches, to rugged canyons and graceful mountains, Alabama truly has it all. Joe Cuhaj's book "Hike America: Alabama," covers enough trailblazing experiences in this well written and easy to follow guidebook to last a lifetime. The maps are clearly drawn and the text contains a wealth of information on everything from the local flora and fauna to the best restaurants in the area. Particularily nice are the individual hike profile maps, side elevation of the trail that can tell the novice more about the roughness of the terrain in a glance than squinting at a contour map all day. This is not the first book on hiking Alabama trails that I have bought, but it is by far the best.Hike Alabama: An Atlas of Alabama's Greateast Hiking Adventures (Hike America Series) Overview

Campfires and Loon Calls: Travels in the Boundary Waters ReviewI enjoyed this book, and learned some helpful canoe-camping tips. I'm planning our first-ever Boundary Waters trip so I'm reading several books. This is not the very best "how-to" Boundary Waters book (Michael Furtman's Canoe Country Camping is more comprehensive), but this book is worth the money and I'm glad I bought and read it. Do not expect this book to suggest routes or include maps, it's not a route book. Instead, the author describes his experiences canoe-camping with his son over the years, and he provides helpful advice and dos-and-don'ts, things to bring and things to leave. Lots of black&white photos. Author's description of rough water, leaky tents, and camping in rain are particularly informative for first-timers.Campfires and Loon Calls: Travels in the Boundary Waters Overview

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Western Region ReviewThe latest edition is a step backward in quality in my opinion.
I am nostalgic to be sure. That alone I am sure creates bias in my review. I still have the canvas #3Duluth Pack with the rugged leather straps from my teen years. It has a slight musty scent and one can still smell the leather to this day. There is perhaps a hint as well of a campfire when one breathes deep. And, unlike me, it still has retained its strength over all these years. Every time I pull the pack off the shelf and inhale; I am reminded of some of my fondest memories.
The same sentiment is true for my collection of Beymer BWCA guidebooks. Over the years I have spent hours paging through the various routes. With the help of Beymer's books I have lead scores of youth and adults on myriad trips through the BWCA over the last two decades. Through his books, Robert Beymer, has been a true friend.
Part of the fun was in the planning. I loved reading through the routes and tracing them out on the PREVOIUSLY INCLUDED 21x14 inch map that was provided in the prior editions. The map was just the right size to get a flavor of the route. The new book has essentially a worthless map printed in the pages at the beginning of the book.
This new edition may have a few new updates, but has lost the charm.
Here is what I miss:
-The separate map.
-The bold font of the lake & river names in the route descriptions. That was nice to help quickly trace out a route. IT MAY SOUND TRIVIAL, BUT THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR DID THAT FOR A REASON!
-The glossy pages of photos. The rare photos in this latest addition are "blah" and unappealing.
-The slightly slimmer field book profile. The earlier editions slipped nicely into a vest pocket. I always took the Beymer guide on every trip in case a route deviation ensued.
- The cover. Although not hardbound, the previous editions had a sturdier cover that could stand a few water splashes.
-Popularity rankings. I actually found the rankings a way to avoid the more "popular" routes. Some folks gravitate to the more popular entry points thinking them the "best"; others (like me) found the rankings a way to avoid a bunch of traffic. When I read, "readers can build their own personal popularity rankings", I saw it as a copout for not wanting to review the data. It is certainly not useful advice for the BWCA neophyte.
Ultimately, I am sure many a coureur du bois will continue to find these books quite worthy, but for those that have the older editions - the lack of quality may be a bit of a letdown.Boundary Waters Canoe Area Western Region Overview

The Best in Tent Camping: Missouri and Ozarks: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Best Tent Camping) ReviewAs the title suggests, this book is an EXCELLENT resource if you, like me, love to find the beautiful, out-of-the-way, quiet places to camp away from the RV crowds. I found this book in my local library, and checked it out 3 times for trips to Missouri, and now have finally purchased my own copy.
Each trip I was able to use this book to plan my itinerary in advance, pick exactly the places I wanted to camp and even the best campsites, as well as the hiking and other activities I wanted to do while in the area. With each campground featured you get a good idea of what makes that spot special, a detailed description (and map) of the campground so you can select the site that best fits your tastes, and a description of hiking trails and natural features to check out in the area. There are good directions, and side bars that summarize the details: cost, number of campsites, facilities available, contact and reservation info, etc.
This is a book I will use again and again as I camp! The Best in Tent Camping: Missouri and Ozarks: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Best Tent Camping) Overview

Yellowstone Treasures: The Traveler's Companion to the National Park ReviewOf all the travel books I've ever used for sightseeing, this is by far the best of them all. All other travel books, especially the consistently mediocre Frommers and Fodors could learn a lot by Chapple's layout and content. We had several books with us for Yellowstone, but this was the only one we needed - every leg of Yellowstone is clearly laid out with mile markers regardless of which direction you are traveling, which is only one of the things that separates this book from the competition. It also covers surrounding areas (entrance cities) of the park, as well as maps, the animals, geography, geology and history, all in a compact fashion. It is extremely thorough and well written. Buy this book for your Yellowstone trip - you won't regret it.Yellowstone Treasures: The Traveler's Companion to the National Park Overview

Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton (Outdoor Family Guides) ReviewI purchased this book and several others for my trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. This book was very informative on lodging, trails, sightseeing and travel. This guide was a time saver as well giving me ideas of the trails and difficulty and estimated time. Many things to do and lots of recommendations for children but its so much more. Definately a keeper and will use next time im planning a vacation to the area. Oh by the way, i do recommend a trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone. The tetons were breathtaking and definately do the trip accross Jenny Lake. Yellowstone, WOW the gysers, wildlife, fishing it was terrific. Have Fun. Jeff
Update: I have carried this book with me to Teton/Yellowston NP the last 5 years and its still releavant even if it is older. This is a great companion book to other more detailed books or newer books available, well worth the $$$....Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone and Grand Teton (Outdoor Family Guides) Overview

The Best in Tent Camping: New England: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos ReviewThis is without a doubt the best book on tent camping in New England that we've found (and we've done a lot of looking). We moved to Massachusetts from California, and after we arrived here and started looking for places to camp that would give us the same kind of wilderness-oriented car camping that we loved to do in the West, we started feeling very disappointed -- every guidebook we read seemed oriented toward RVers and people who are looking for a lot of "amenities" (shuffleboard courts, swimming pools, paved paths, etc.) when they go camping. Then this summer we discovered Lafe Low's book, and our camping outlook brightened considerably -- this is a wonderful resource for people who enjoy the same kind of tent camping that we do.
One particularly nice feature of this book is that it doesn't just describe each campground in general terms, it also describes in detail the specific campsites at each campground, and gives recommendations for which sites will give tent campers the most privacy, quiet, scenery, etc. This is such helpful information to have when planning a trip -- we used it when going to Harold Park State Forest here in Massachusetts this summer, and we got a beautiful campsite that really suited us.
If you tent camp in New England, buy this book -- it's excellent! The Best in Tent Camping: New England: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos Overview
