The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories ReviewWhen I read the short stories in this book, it reminded me of a time as a kid when I loved to hear tales spun and delivered by story tellers that could bring the characters and drama to life. Indeed, story-telling was a true art form and the memory of this is captured in "The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories".
There are some classics here: "That Spot" by Jack London relates the uneasiness of two young prospectors working hard to find their fortune while trying to shake one of their sled dogs who turns out to be more of a curse than a blessing.
"The End of the Trail" by Clarence Mulford has Hopalong Cassidy chasing down a rustler who tried to kill one of his partners. Mulford brings out the language and diction of a long in America that has long since passed but still resonates with us.
There are other great stories included here by Zane Grey and Adirondack Murray that work great both in reading them and in telling them. The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories Overview

New Mexico and Arizona State Parks: A Complete Recreation Guide ReviewDon and Barbara Laine have done an outstanding job in this book. I live in New Mexico and we just bought a camper, so I went to the library to get some book on where to go camping. I borrowed a couple of guides for the Southwest, but this book is the only one that anybody ever needs. Every State Park is listed in detail, even little maps for each Park are included. Furthermore they tell you exactly what to expect from each park and what there is to do. This comes in handy when travelling with kids.Equipped with this book we already went to 2 State Parks and found exactly what the Laines had described. This book is a must have for anybody that wants to explore Arizona and New Mexico.New Mexico and Arizona State Parks: A Complete Recreation Guide Overview

Hike Alabama: An Atlas of Alabama's Greateast Hiking Adventures (Hike America Series) ReviewThe state of Alabama is a natural wonder. From clear gulf waters kissed by blindingly beautiful white sand beaches, to rugged canyons and graceful mountains, Alabama truly has it all. Joe Cuhaj's book "Hike America: Alabama," covers enough trailblazing experiences in this well written and easy to follow guidebook to last a lifetime. The maps are clearly drawn and the text contains a wealth of information on everything from the local flora and fauna to the best restaurants in the area. Particularily nice are the individual hike profile maps, side elevation of the trail that can tell the novice more about the roughness of the terrain in a glance than squinting at a contour map all day. This is not the first book on hiking Alabama trails that I have bought, but it is by far the best.Hike Alabama: An Atlas of Alabama's Greateast Hiking Adventures (Hike America Series) Overview

The Best in Tent Camping: New York State: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Best Tent Camping) ReviewI had set great hopes on this book, as we love tent camping and "hate RVs, concrete slabs and loud portable stereos" (the book's subtitle).
I spent a great deal of time reading this book, making notations, going on [...] (DEC campground rez website) and finally selected Brown Tract Pond in Raquette Lake, the Adirondacks--site 69, to be specific. There were factual errors in the book (no showers at this campground, for one thing) and long story short, I don't know when the authors last visited this particular campground but site 69, described as having "breathtaking views of the pond and wilderness" was so overgrown you could not see the lake or much of anything else, and it was sandwiched between two other sites and was literally 5 feet away from other campers (one of whom had a loud dog.) There were a great many exposed tree roots cobbling site 69, so bad that you could not pitch a tent--and the site was at a huge slant--totally not level--no mention of this at all in the book. Luckily, the caretaker at the campground let us drive around and select another campsite that was open for the time period we had booked, otherwise we would have been miserable. So, I'd say this book it "OK", that it definitely gives you a broad idea, but it's not the end-all and it definitely has accuracy issues. The Best in Tent Camping: New York State: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Best Tent Camping) Overview

AMC's Best Day Hikes Near New York City: Four-season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey ReviewFull disclosure -- I am the author's brother. That said, I genuinely enjoyed this book, and more importantly, have used it in planning local hikes for my two boys (ages six and three). The write-ups go beyond "follow the path for three miles and turn left at the bridge by the stream," as many guide books do. Readers get wonderful context to help enjoy an excellent selection of local hikes -- a great antidote for those of us in the NYC metro area who feel like there is no outdoors left. There is -- you just have to know where to go to find it. An easy exercise with this book.AMC's Best Day Hikes Near New York City: Four-season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey Overview

Campfires and Loon Calls: Travels in the Boundary Waters ReviewI enjoyed this book, and learned some helpful canoe-camping tips. I'm planning our first-ever Boundary Waters trip so I'm reading several books. This is not the very best "how-to" Boundary Waters book (Michael Furtman's Canoe Country Camping is more comprehensive), but this book is worth the money and I'm glad I bought and read it. Do not expect this book to suggest routes or include maps, it's not a route book. Instead, the author describes his experiences canoe-camping with his son over the years, and he provides helpful advice and dos-and-don'ts, things to bring and things to leave. Lots of black&white photos. Author's description of rough water, leaky tents, and camping in rain are particularly informative for first-timers.Campfires and Loon Calls: Travels in the Boundary Waters Overview

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Western Region ReviewThe latest edition is a step backward in quality in my opinion.
I am nostalgic to be sure. That alone I am sure creates bias in my review. I still have the canvas #3Duluth Pack with the rugged leather straps from my teen years. It has a slight musty scent and one can still smell the leather to this day. There is perhaps a hint as well of a campfire when one breathes deep. And, unlike me, it still has retained its strength over all these years. Every time I pull the pack off the shelf and inhale; I am reminded of some of my fondest memories.
The same sentiment is true for my collection of Beymer BWCA guidebooks. Over the years I have spent hours paging through the various routes. With the help of Beymer's books I have lead scores of youth and adults on myriad trips through the BWCA over the last two decades. Through his books, Robert Beymer, has been a true friend.
Part of the fun was in the planning. I loved reading through the routes and tracing them out on the PREVOIUSLY INCLUDED 21x14 inch map that was provided in the prior editions. The map was just the right size to get a flavor of the route. The new book has essentially a worthless map printed in the pages at the beginning of the book.
This new edition may have a few new updates, but has lost the charm.
Here is what I miss:
-The separate map.
-The bold font of the lake & river names in the route descriptions. That was nice to help quickly trace out a route. IT MAY SOUND TRIVIAL, BUT THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR DID THAT FOR A REASON!
-The glossy pages of photos. The rare photos in this latest addition are "blah" and unappealing.
-The slightly slimmer field book profile. The earlier editions slipped nicely into a vest pocket. I always took the Beymer guide on every trip in case a route deviation ensued.
- The cover. Although not hardbound, the previous editions had a sturdier cover that could stand a few water splashes.
-Popularity rankings. I actually found the rankings a way to avoid the more "popular" routes. Some folks gravitate to the more popular entry points thinking them the "best"; others (like me) found the rankings a way to avoid a bunch of traffic. When I read, "readers can build their own personal popularity rankings", I saw it as a copout for not wanting to review the data. It is certainly not useful advice for the BWCA neophyte.
Ultimately, I am sure many a coureur du bois will continue to find these books quite worthy, but for those that have the older editions - the lack of quality may be a bit of a letdown.Boundary Waters Canoe Area Western Region Overview

The Best in Tent Camping: Missouri and Ozarks: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Best Tent Camping) ReviewAs the title suggests, this book is an EXCELLENT resource if you, like me, love to find the beautiful, out-of-the-way, quiet places to camp away from the RV crowds. I found this book in my local library, and checked it out 3 times for trips to Missouri, and now have finally purchased my own copy.
Each trip I was able to use this book to plan my itinerary in advance, pick exactly the places I wanted to camp and even the best campsites, as well as the hiking and other activities I wanted to do while in the area. With each campground featured you get a good idea of what makes that spot special, a detailed description (and map) of the campground so you can select the site that best fits your tastes, and a description of hiking trails and natural features to check out in the area. There are good directions, and side bars that summarize the details: cost, number of campsites, facilities available, contact and reservation info, etc.
This is a book I will use again and again as I camp! The Best in Tent Camping: Missouri and Ozarks: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Best Tent Camping) Overview

Best Easy Day Hikes Milwaukee (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) ReviewThis short booklet will take you to 20 different parks in the greater Milwaukee area. Each chapter/walk gives info on location and GPS coordinates, whether it is pet-friendly, if admission is charged, length of trail in miles and approximate time, and gives directions on how to get there. There is also usually something of a blurb about the details of the trail or walk itself, sometimes more informative (or accurate) than others. Additionally, small maps are provided of the walks; these are so basic that they are occasionally deceptive in larger parks such as Lapham Park or Grant Park, but so be it.
All of the parks are accessible by car, and all are pretty simple to get around in; this is not adventure hiking by any means. But if you are looking for a change of pace from your routine dog walk, and are willing to drive a little bit and maybe pay a park fee, you might give this booklet a try.
My biggest complaint is that, at $10, this seems a little bit overpriced.Best Easy Day Hikes Milwaukee (Best Easy Day Hikes Series) Overview

The Best in Tent Camping: New England: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos ReviewThis is without a doubt the best book on tent camping in New England that we've found (and we've done a lot of looking). We moved to Massachusetts from California, and after we arrived here and started looking for places to camp that would give us the same kind of wilderness-oriented car camping that we loved to do in the West, we started feeling very disappointed -- every guidebook we read seemed oriented toward RVers and people who are looking for a lot of "amenities" (shuffleboard courts, swimming pools, paved paths, etc.) when they go camping. Then this summer we discovered Lafe Low's book, and our camping outlook brightened considerably -- this is a wonderful resource for people who enjoy the same kind of tent camping that we do.
One particularly nice feature of this book is that it doesn't just describe each campground in general terms, it also describes in detail the specific campsites at each campground, and gives recommendations for which sites will give tent campers the most privacy, quiet, scenery, etc. This is such helpful information to have when planning a trip -- we used it when going to Harold Park State Forest here in Massachusetts this summer, and we got a beautiful campsite that really suited us.
If you tent camp in New England, buy this book -- it's excellent! The Best in Tent Camping: New England: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos Overview

Quiet Water Canoe Guide: New York ReviewAn immense compendium of the pristine paddling spots left in New York State. The authors looked for lakes with one goal in mind: find places where the water has not been spoiled by development, pollution, or powerboats. Unquestionably, they succeeded. The book describes over 100 trips across the state, with an expectedly high concentration in the Adirondack Mountains. For each trip, the authors describe launch locations, scenery, notable areas on the lake, and any interesting wildlife seen during their paddle. Many of the lakes are a bit small for a full day trip, but if one only has a few hours to paddle, these are certainly places to go. The authors did a good job of including sites from across the entire state, and tried to include a number of lakes near New York City. Unfortunately, the authors almost ignored flat river paddling, but a few calm rivers and streams did make their way into the book. Overall, if you are a New Yorker who loves getting away from it all, this is one book to have.Quiet Water Canoe Guide: New York Overview

Sierra North: Backcountry Trips in Californias Sierra Nevada ReviewI finally replaced my 1988 5th edition with the current 9th edition by Kathy Morey, Mike White and the usual Wilderness Press accomplices.
It is physically larger and heavier, but I have finally realized that it is ok to cut out just the trip I am doing and take it with me, so weight is not an issue.
There are a couple of big improvements. The most significant one for me is the organization by major highway. i. e. Interstate 80 trips, Highway 89 trips, Highway 50 trips, etc. Makes it much easier to select possible trips for a short amout of time off. The other improvement is the use of text on grey background to indicate such things as chapter tabs, Notes that are a supplement to the trail text and so forth. It makes the book more interesting to the eye.
The maps in my 5th edition were in a pocket at the back of the book. Now they are a full page in imbedded in the text with the associated trail description. They still have the trail elevation profiles that are still an important part of my trip planning. The bigger book size allows more and larger black and white photos.
On the trail descriptions themselves, I have recently hiked all the PCT segments, and reading after the fact, find the descriptions accurate. On all the Wilderness Press guides, I sometimes find myself puffing up a steep grade and thinking "why didn't they tell me about this?". Assume that the descriptions are done by an experienced, acclimated hiker and don't assume the first day or two will be easy
A friend just told me about a new hiking area where he had found a great view, so I looked up Thunder Mountain in Sierra North, and found out all about it.
They have GPS waypoints on the trailheads. I find that where I need them is on these obsure trail junctions - maybe something for the 10th edition.
Definitely a good book for your hiking shelf.Sierra North: Backcountry Trips in Californias Sierra Nevada Overview
