Everyday People: Profiles from the Garden State ReviewThis review is long overdue. I picked up Al's book almost a year ago at a local book sale. I'm not a big reader, but having met Al in person led me to buy the book. I began skimming the book later on that night. Eventually, I stopped skimming and began reading. The profiles in this book are interesting. Yes, these are 'everyday people', but Al's insightful writing sheds electricity onto their lives. It was really like a breath of fresh air to read about the lives ordinary people lead. It's not everyday, in this fast-paced world of ours, when you take the time out to sit down and learn about the strangers who come and go. I highly recommend this pleasurable read.Everyday People: Profiles from the Garden State Overview

Over the End Line ReviewA teen boy Jonny, not very popular, plays soccer, not that well. He's usually warming the bench because he folds under the pressure of the game. His best friend, Kyle, is the star soccer player, straight A student, and is invited to all the cool parties and has all the cool friends. All season, Jonny works hard to improve his playing and makes the big score in the championship game. Afterwards, he's finally invited to "The Circle" for a party -- but something horrible happens. A girl gets raped -- a girl Jonny is friends with -- and Jonny saw it happen. And his best friend was involved.
This is a good book for those who are into sports as there are a lot of detailed descriptions of soccer games and practices. But even for those who aren't into sports (like me), this is a good story of determination. The other strand running through the story -- about the rape -- seemed to not fit so well. Though it adds tension as we wait to find out what happened and who was involved, I didn't see any foreshadowing that the kids were capable of this or that that kind of thing happened at The Circle. That part of the story seemed kind of tacked on to me. In any case, I did enjoy the story and Jonny as a character.Over the End Line Overview

Nature Walks in New Jersey, 2nd: AMC Guide to the Best Trails from the Highlands to Cape May ReviewThe most wonderful little book. It is easy to read, use, and follow with simple maps of the trails, as well as a locator map to find a trail within the state. Very well organized. The description of the trails include a little bit of history as well. I considered myself knowledgeable about the great outdoors in my area, until I got this book. It has opened my eyes to many beautiful marshlands, hikes, and waterfalls of New Jersey that I never knew about. I plan on doing all 40 walks/hikes (there is a nice mix of easy to challenging) by the end of the year. Everyone who lives in New Jersey should see these sites!Nature Walks in New Jersey, 2nd: AMC Guide to the Best Trails from the Highlands to Cape May Overview

New Jersey Shipwrecks: 350 Years in the Graveyard of the Atlantic ReviewIf you've never stood on deck and smelled fresh salt, if you haven't felt the surf break around your feet at the shore, get this book and you'll be hooked! Great illustrations and photographs are surrounded by scintillating writing from an author who obviously has had a long love affair with the ocean. This book may be non-fiction but it will grip your interest as much as any of the great classic sea novels.New Jersey Shipwrecks: 350 Years in the Graveyard of the Atlantic Overview

Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State ReviewIt's about time we have a book that New Jerseyans can be proud of. I'm not much of an outdoors type of person, but a friend recommended Wild NJ & I'm really glad she did! Whats great is that every chapter brings entirely new revelations about the Garden State. We get Manatees here!?!? Cranes & snowy owls & porcupines? I had no idea! But I also like how it is a call to action - get outside & do these things yourself! I have only been kayaking once but after reading about some of these places I will be getting out there again this summer. It's funny, I had always defended NJ against my friends from PA & NY but now I finally have some support. Anyone who's proud of being from Jersey, or at least knows theres a good side to it (not just Snooki - yuck) will enjoy this book.Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State Overview

AMC's Best Day Hikes Near New York City: Four-season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey ReviewFull disclosure -- I am the author's brother. That said, I genuinely enjoyed this book, and more importantly, have used it in planning local hikes for my two boys (ages six and three). The write-ups go beyond "follow the path for three miles and turn left at the bridge by the stream," as many guide books do. Readers get wonderful context to help enjoy an excellent selection of local hikes -- a great antidote for those of us in the NYC metro area who feel like there is no outdoors left. There is -- you just have to know where to go to find it. An easy exercise with this book.AMC's Best Day Hikes Near New York City: Four-season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey Overview

Birds of the Mid-Atlantic Region and Where to Find Them ReviewYou won't find another guide with ALL of this information so nicely organized and explained. The guidance on where to find the individual species you may have been longing to see but didn't know where to find is wonderful and most welcome. We also like to peruse all the excellent birding sites that the author describes to get ideas of promising bird outings to take. The photos are excellent and show the many species of the region to good advantage. A great guide for birders of all levels!Birds of the Mid-Atlantic Region and Where to Find Them Overview

Hiking New Jersey: A Guide to 50 of the Garden State's Greatest Hiking Adventures (State Hiking Guides Series) ReviewThis fine collection of hikes in New Jersey covers a fair sampling of outdoor treasures from all over the state. I purchased both the hard copy and the Kindle versions, and this Review discusses first the book and then using the guide in the Kindle version.
The hard copy version is a classic hiking guide, produced on good paper with colored covers and well bound. The extract provided on the "Look Inside" feature here on Amazon is a fair representation of the description of each hike: details of length and difficulty, directions to trail head, other users, dogs allowed, a simple map, and historical or environmental items of interest. There is a very useful discussion of hiking in the state generally, a suggestion to purchase more detailed maps, especially from the New York New Jersey Trail Conference (see first Comment), checklists of items to carry, a short but good bibliography, and a list of additional sources of information, primarily online.
The only criticism that occurs to me is that there is no GPS data for any of the hikes, but that data is not essential to the occasional hiker. On balance, this is a five star hiking and walking guide for New Jersey.
As an experiment, I purchased both the hard copy and downloaded the Kindle version, in the latter case to a Kindle 2, the Kindle PC and the Kindle iPhone app. I was particularly interested in how the Kindle version would work in practice. (I confess I've loved using paper guide books for over 40 years, and this version is perfectly acceptable for trail purposes; about a pound in weight, easy to carry and use even in wet weather (encased in a Ziplock bag), wide margins for writing, easily Xeroxable for even less weight, in short the classic hiker's approach.)
The Kindle version of the text is generally identical to the hard copy except that formatting is simplified in the Kindle version - double columns and inserts in the hard copy are converted to a single column text in the Kindle version. One troubling difference: a number of capital letters appear in lower case in the Kindle version, suggesting that there may be other typographical errors. My sampling proof reading didn't turn up any, but my sample was only 5% of the trail descriptions.
I used the guidebook on two hikes carrying my Kindle, and things went pretty well -- the text was perfectly visible but it is not possible to blow up the maps or the charts in the same way you can the text, the Kindle is a quarter the weight of the book, but costs 15 times as much and is pretty fragile. Ziplock pages protected it perfectly without affecting visibility or using the toggle or the keys -- however, protecting it from dings and dongs in the field is problematic -- my heavy duty carrying case brought the weight up to about the same weight as the book.
I considered taking the Kindle version on a third hike loaded onto a small HP computer, about 20 the cost of the book, and easily three times the weight including protective covering. The Kindle software is free and although there is less functionality on the PC than on the Kindle, the speed, the color pictures, back lighting and clearer text make this a real option to carrying the Kindle -- but ...
The Kindle app on the iPhone was an absolute triumph. The colored pictures appeared in full color; the text was crisp and easily readable, the ebook is stored on the iPhone so that it could be read even when there was no service (because of looming rock walls or high power lines), the maps were easily scalable using the pinch and pull features, making it easy to figure out small details of complex trail connections, and there is no additional weight - as a lone hiker by preference, I always carry a cell phone for security.
In addition, there are an enormous number of other apps for the iPhone that enhance the hiking experience: a compass, a fairly good GPS co-ordinator, a follow the crumbs back track, a flashlight, a notebook, Google Books and more to the point Google maps, and I'm sure many additional apps that I'll discover over time.
One small nuisance: I always carry a Xerox copy of my trail descriptions in addition to any maps and guide books. I've discovered a fairly cumbersome way of getting that bit of redundant security: make a screen shot of the page from the PC version of the guidebook, store that on my computer, then print the image. A better techie can undoubtedly describe how to do that step by step, and my son has offered to do so for me as a Christmas present. (I'll post the steps in a Comment in due course.)
In any event, much as I love hard copy guide books, my iPhone version is a real contender. I'll carry hard copy and iPhone versions for a few more hikes but my guess is that I'm already a convert to ebook hiking guide books. At least on the iPhone.
Robert C. Ross 2009
Addendum: After almost two months and four more hikes, I'm a convert to the iPhone version of hiking guide books, if they are available in that format. One pleasant discovery: it's great fun to read about new hikes (or treasure old) ones in the odd moments -- waiting in line, on the train, where ever I may be -- the cell phone is always with me -- and so are the hikes.

A Guide to Bird Finding in New Jersey, revised and updated ReviewThis book covers the vast majority (something like 80) of the popular bird watching sites in New jersey. It tells you what birds you are likely to see there and where the best places (and best times) are. It has lots of detail on rare birds. There is also a great section in the back that goes species by species and tells you where you are most likely to see them and how common they are in New Jersey. You still need a good field guide, but this is a great book for actually finding the birds in the area.A Guide to Bird Finding in New Jersey, revised and updated Overview

Birds and Birding at Cape May: What to See and When and Where to Go ReviewCape May is a peninsula, the southernmost point of New Jersey. It separates Delaware Bay from the Atlantic Ocean, and lies only fourteen miles north of Delaware. Consequently, millions of birds funnel through the area in the spring and fall of each year. There are a number of nature preserves and wildlife refuges nearby. The Cape May Bird Observatory is the center of birding activity in the area.
"If birds are an excellent judge of climate, Cape May has the finest climate in the United States, for it has the greatest variety of birds." Alexander Wilson was writing in 1812 before Texas, the current US record holder, joined the union. But the area is still one of the best places to watch birds in the United States.
The climate also attracts thousands of people to the area. There is a wonderful array of attractions, beaches, restaurants, hotels and camping spots available to birders and to any companions who may not share their passions.
The authors have dozens of birding books and articles to their credit. As a quick perusal of the extracts on Amazon proves, they know the area intimately, and describe it in clear, helpful language. They profile 33 birding locations, and discuss the histories of popular birding sites. Some of the best passages deal with some of the great birders who enjoyed this area: Alexander Wilson to Roger Tory Peterson to Pete Dunne. They add delightful accounts of their own experiences; the sighting of a Yellow-nosed Albatross is especially good.
There is simply no better single volume resource covering the birds, history and geography of this area. If you go, take along this book, and stop in at the Cape May Bird Observatory to see what is going on. BirdCapeMay can give you a head start before you leave home.
