Consider the horseshoe crab in the sandy coastal waters off New York, Delaware Bay & the Yucatan. their mad annihilation will grip your heart.
An unusual book with a unique perspective of our roaring cities with much to think about, much to chortle over & much, much about which to be regretful. The author writes much of history, urban & rural, architecture & locations, plagues & sewage, city limits & elastic boundaries. She quotes Darwin & Whitman, mayors & statisticians & the quiet, unassuming rescuers of the lost, beaten & bruised city wildlife.
Consider the billions of migrating birds that rush over North America twice a year, seeking breeding grounds & winter homes ... you can stand on Wall Street in the wee hours & listen to the migrants calling, faint & high, as they stream above the sleeping city.

The Architectural Guidebook to New York City ReviewThe most obvious reason to replace the AIA Guide with this book is size. Dealing with only one borough enables the author to go into more detail while reducing the size of the book. The AIA Guide is about half the size of a large yellow pages. The Architectural Guidebook to NYC is about the size of an average novel. That makes a big difference when you're stuffing it into your backpack or purse for a trip on subway or foot.
The more extensive entries are very welcome. In Union Square with this book and a view of the surrounding buildings, I was able to spend a pleasant and informative hour on a park bench, for free. That's a better bargain than the Staten Island Ferry.
Morrone keeps the architect's jargon to a minimum and knows his subject well. The historical insights and views on clashing aesthetics were skillfully presented. He pointed out a couple of museums of very high caliber that I wasn't even aware of. A book like this is a perfect jumping off point for thousands of topics, from neighborhoods to cultures to politics to construction.
I would encourage him to write similar books on the other buroughs, or better yet, an even more detailed work on each of the neighborhoods of Manhattan: each of them has at least a thousand buildings worth writing about.The Architectural Guidebook to New York City Overview

City Walks with Kids: New York: 50 Adventures on Foot ReviewOur family recently returned from a visit to Manhattan. We used 5 or 6 texts as well as this boxed set of walking tours. The set consists of 50 3-3/4 by 5-1/2 inch heavy stock cards and a folding master card that shows all the walks in the context of a five bouroughs map.
There are 3 walks in Central Park, 6 Midtown, none north of the park and 20 south of the Flatiron Building. Four walks cover The Bronx, one is in Queens and 4 in Brooklyn. Each walk card shows a moderately useful map on one side, which does not show all streets but does list subway and bus information as well as web and phone information; on the other side the text points out historic buildings, book stores and museums.
It was very convenient to grab a few cards as we went out the door. There is also information about kid-friendly restaurants, which was very helpful. We also had the City Walks set (for adults) and while there was overlap in areas covered, there was not much in content, which made this worthwhile.

We had friends to see, and entertainment to experience. The night life ultimately took a big chunk out of our day time activities. There is no way we would have seen as much as we did, if the little black book wasn't guiding us.
What I loved the most was:
1. It's size
2. The chapters - each chapter encompasses a particular area with places to see, places to eat and drink, where to shop, and where to stay.
3. Fold out maps. They are discreet, and perfect sized!

They have very good suggestions on Cabs, Subways, Buses, Eating, where to stay, suggested itineraries, etc. Loads and loads of contact information for museums and sights to see.

Central Park (Then and Now: New York) ReviewThis is a wonderful book, and very much worthy of the series. I'd like to point out just one small error, though. The Rachael Robinson Elmer postcard reproduced on p. 71 does not show any part of Central Park; in fact the site it depicts is one and a half cross-town blocks away from the Park. The postcard shows the staircase at the southeast corner of _Morningside_ Park, just north of the northwest intersection of Manhattan Avenue with 110th Street. The Ninth Avenue Elevated ran along 110th Street at this point and thus was visible from this staircase. The staircase is still there and instantly recognizable from Elmer's painting. The only Central Park staircase that afforded a view of the Elevated (though it was an angled view, not straight on as in Elmer's postcard), the one at the northwest corner of Central Park just across from where the Elevated curved north from 110th Street into 8th Avenue, also still exists and is of a very different construction from the one Elmer painted. At least two postcards exist that show that view from Central Park, but Elmer's is not one of them.

Tom's Job ReviewTom Howell, a ski-bum in Aspen, falls in love at 25. Fifteen years later, he's a divorced father and editor at a conference in New York, where he is supposed to host an esoteric discussion on property and casualty insurance, which is doomed to fail.
The questions, then, that Tom Howell poses are these: Can a nice guy who thrived in the freedom of Aspen make it in a work-a-day world, where his crazy boss runs a marginal company? Can Tom, who is basically a passive loner, find meaning in his busy life, which really just sort of happened to him?
Interestingly, Ethan Cooper takes the story of this sad-sack and finds both poignancy and hilarity, as Tom Howell fights back in New York and retains his sanity. Of course, it helps that the malingering Tom shirks his conference responsibilities and visits Central Park and the Jazz Standard, as well as accommodates an inebriated booth-babe, who passes out in his hotel room. Cooper is also smart to develop the character of Jim Schuster, a life-of-the-party type who is the master of any craziness.
This is the third Ethan Cooper novel that I've read and this one is my favorite. The reason: In SMOOTH IN MEETINGS and IN CONTROL, Cooper focused on very linear goal-oriented businessmen who actually lived very narrow lives. In contrast, Cooper's characters in TOM'S JOB range from a billionaire investor to Tom, a likable schlemiel. This range of personalities creates a very rich brew, where knowledge of, and affinity for, corporate life, aren't really necessary to appreciate a completely involving narrative. It's a fast read, too.
There's a great scene near the end, by the way, when Tom contemplates the pebbled texture of the ceiling in his hotel room. Read it... you'll see what I mean.

I was disappointed at this book. I was expecting something far better from National Geographic. More detailed explanations, legends for price ranges or at least a Manhattan map maybe. This book fails the reflect the variety of activities that you can do in New York. Instead it lists rules for not making noisy conversations or not leaning on the bars in subway. This insider tips were unsatisfactory. I referred to it only once or twice during the week we spent in New York. I'm not much of an outdoors type of person, but a friend recommended Wild NJ & I'm really glad she did! Whats great is that every chapter brings entirely new revelations about the Garden State. We get Manatees here!?!? Cranes & snowy owls & porcupines? I had no idea! But I also like how it is a call to action - get outside & do these things yourself! I have only been kayaking once but after reading about some of these places I will be getting out there again this summer. It's funny, I had always defended NJ against my friends from PA & NY but now I finally have some support. Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City ReviewSprinkled throughout this book are 12 digitally-rendered aerial "photos" of New York in 1409, often featured as before-and-after comparisons of present-day Manhattan. These are beautiful and utterly fascinating images and are the heart of this volume and the program behind it (WCS's Mannahatta Project).
The book is also chock-full of historic and computer-rendered maps, wildlife and ecosystem photos and other illustrations. Sanderson's text is informative, entertaining and not preachy.
Through this excellent book, the reader not only learns about the natural history of NYC but sees it as a microcosm of the human impacts on landscapes across the continent and world.
The writing style and tone remind me of the excellent "World Without Us" but with the added bonus of being heavily illustrated.
I only wish that there were more of the large-format digital before-and-after Manhatta Project photos... a coffee table book would be justified!
