City Walks with Kids: New York: 50 Adventures on Foot ReviewOur family recently returned from a visit to Manhattan. We used 5 or 6 texts as well as this boxed set of walking tours. The set consists of 50 3-3/4 by 5-1/2 inch heavy stock cards and a folding master card that shows all the walks in the context of a five bouroughs map.
There are 3 walks in Central Park, 6 Midtown, none north of the park and 20 south of the Flatiron Building. Four walks cover The Bronx, one is in Queens and 4 in Brooklyn. Each walk card shows a moderately useful map on one side, which does not show all streets but does list subway and bus information as well as web and phone information; on the other side the text points out historic buildings, book stores and museums.
It was very convenient to grab a few cards as we went out the door. There is also information about kid-friendly restaurants, which was very helpful. We also had the City Walks set (for adults) and while there was overlap in areas covered, there was not much in content, which made this worthwhile.

Best Hikes With Children San Francisco Bay Area ReviewThis seems to be a great book for giving you ideas of where to go hiking with your kids. But the user should beware that as far as
I can tell, the information is at least 10 years out of date. I have gone on three of the hikes so far and they were all incorrectly described in the book. The first hike (Lookout Loop) described the parking lot to start from. But it turned out that the actual parking lot was CLOSED to the public and could only be used if you had previously made a group reservation. So we had to park on a twisty mountain road and walk to the closed parking lot. On another hike, the Palo Alto Baylands, the hike entails a long walk out on the catwalks over the marsh. As a local resident, I know for a fact that those catwalks have been closed to the public for AT LEAST ten years!! The descriptions of Shoreline Park are also out of date in that they describe duck blinds that have been gone for at least several years. Given all of this, I find the phrases "entirely updated" and "completely revised" that are on the back of the book very misleading. This is a good book to give you ideas of where to go. But be prepared for surprises because you are reading a hike guide from the early 90's (or even earlier)!Best Hikes With Children San Francisco Bay Area Overview

Best Hikes with Kids: San Francisco Bay Area ReviewYears ago my wife and I would take her then four year old granddaughter hiking. I'm glad we did. That little girl was better for it. Kids need to be exposed to nature up close. But hiking with a four year old is really challenging. "Look! I see an acorn! Look, there's another." Of course, the whole trail was littered with acorns and we collected as many as we could carry. One half mile and an hour plus later, we were back at the car, and I was somewhat grateful I never had kids of my own. Parenting takes patience, and never more so than when you try to introduce children to the out of doors.
The Bay Area, with its profusion of state, regional, county, and national parks has more places to take kids than most urban areas. Laure Latham's new book explores these areas with kids in mind. An extended introduction tells you how to introduce kids to nature, and what to expect from various age groups. In all, she describes 100 hikes appropriate for toddler to teens. Like many guide books to the Bay area, this one divides the region by county lines. A wide variety of hikes are included from paved level routes suitable for strollers to more challenging explorations of wooded areas. Each hike includes a decent sketch map and detailed route description.
In all, I think this is a decent book and worth a read, especially for parents who want to make sure their little prodigies don't suffer from the increasingly common nature deficit disorder. But honestly, I admire anyone who is so dedicated to their kids that they are willing to take them along on their own break times. Especially toddlers. You need patience to hike with little ones. And eventually you will be rewarded for it. This book gives you a glimpse of those rewards to come.Best Hikes with Kids: San Francisco Bay Area Overview
