Fun Places to Go with Children in New England: 4th Edition, Over 500 Listings, Completely Revised & Updated ReviewA travel book cannot be all things to all people. This book tries, within the parameters set by the authors, to try to find places unique to New England, that are fun for parents and kids. In this, they do succeed.
But because they cover *all* the New England states, each section is necessarily full of capsule information, and no useful maps. (the state map of MA, for example, doesn't even show some of the towns mentioned in the text, or show where sites are located in relation to each other) It's basically a useful list with phone numbers, addresses and hours. The authors assume that the reader will have maps available, since written directions are nonexistent. So, I'm not sure if this a travel guide for native New Englanders, or visitors. Either way, it's damned inconvenient.
It did surprise me with some of the selections - like Harvard's Museum of Culture and Natural History and Myopia Polo; but coming from Boston myself, I noticed there wasn't a heck of a lot "new" in the MA section. In all fairness, it's hard to come up with new kid friendly sites in Boston. Most guidebooks cover that territory exhaustively. Restaurants are featured in each section (excellent idea) but no listing tells you how near the eateries are located to sites. Do you need to make special trips to eat out?
Another quibble I've got is that many of the sites chosen assume that readers are families with older children. However, it is angled for families going on weekends or vacations together, so I can't complain too much about the limited number of listings for those with toddlers in tow.
I sound pretty negative. I bought this book expecting to find lots more listings relevant to my needs (at this time), and am only partially satisfied. However, the authors have done their homework. You can tell that they visited the sites they mention, and that's no small thing. What they do say about the places they visited has a ring of authenticity, and I feel I can trust their word. Best Hikes With Children San Francisco Bay Area ReviewThis seems to be a great book for giving you ideas of where to go hiking with your kids. But the user should beware that as far as
I can tell, the information is at least 10 years out of date. I have gone on three of the hikes so far and they were all incorrectly described in the book. The first hike (Lookout Loop) described the parking lot to start from. But it turned out that the actual parking lot was CLOSED to the public and could only be used if you had previously made a group reservation. So we had to park on a twisty mountain road and walk to the closed parking lot. On another hike, the Palo Alto Baylands, the hike entails a long walk out on the catwalks over the marsh. As a local resident, I know for a fact that those catwalks have been closed to the public for AT LEAST ten years!! The descriptions of Shoreline Park are also out of date in that they describe duck blinds that have been gone for at least several years. Given all of this, I find the phrases "entirely updated" and "completely revised" that are on the back of the book very misleading. This is a good book to give you ideas of where to go. But be prepared for surprises because you are reading a hike guide from the early 90's (or even earlier)!Best Hikes With Children San Francisco Bay Area Overview

If you are a parent and you are new to hiking with kids in the western Washington region this will probably be the only book you need. It is superbly written, with great details on the hike itself,knowing ahead of time what difficulty level you are facing is a must in my opinion, as well as directions on how to find the trail head, tips and tricks to hiking with your children in a way that you will all enjoy it and so much more. Frommer's Chicago with Kids (Frommer's With Kids) ReviewDuring a recent trip to Chicago, I used several guide books to plan our trip and to use during the visit; I found this particular reference was the one I used most frequently and the one I threw in the backpack as we headed out the door each day. This guide was indispensable, containing suggested itineraries, an overview of the city, great ideas for excursions -- tours, strolls, attractions, shopping and entertainment -- as well as a history of the city and superb chapters on hotels and restaurants. We even stayed at a hotel that was surprisingly inexpensive and in a great location, and one that our native Chicago friends didn't know about! The guide is written in a friendly style, is well-organized, has lots of maps, and is jam-packed with useful information.

Best Hikes with Kids: San Francisco Bay Area ReviewYears ago my wife and I would take her then four year old granddaughter hiking. I'm glad we did. That little girl was better for it. Kids need to be exposed to nature up close. But hiking with a four year old is really challenging. "Look! I see an acorn! Look, there's another." Of course, the whole trail was littered with acorns and we collected as many as we could carry. One half mile and an hour plus later, we were back at the car, and I was somewhat grateful I never had kids of my own. Parenting takes patience, and never more so than when you try to introduce children to the out of doors.
The Bay Area, with its profusion of state, regional, county, and national parks has more places to take kids than most urban areas. Laure Latham's new book explores these areas with kids in mind. An extended introduction tells you how to introduce kids to nature, and what to expect from various age groups. In all, she describes 100 hikes appropriate for toddler to teens. Like many guide books to the Bay area, this one divides the region by county lines. A wide variety of hikes are included from paved level routes suitable for strollers to more challenging explorations of wooded areas. Each hike includes a decent sketch map and detailed route description.
In all, I think this is a decent book and worth a read, especially for parents who want to make sure their little prodigies don't suffer from the increasingly common nature deficit disorder. But honestly, I admire anyone who is so dedicated to their kids that they are willing to take them along on their own break times. Especially toddlers. You need patience to hike with little ones. And eventually you will be rewarded for it. This book gives you a glimpse of those rewards to come.Best Hikes with Kids: San Francisco Bay Area Overview
