Fun Places to Go with Children in New England: 4th Edition, Over 500 Listings, Completely Revised & Updated ReviewA travel book cannot be all things to all people. This book tries, within the parameters set by the authors, to try to find places unique to New England, that are fun for parents and kids. In this, they do succeed.
But because they cover *all* the New England states, each section is necessarily full of capsule information, and no useful maps. (the state map of MA, for example, doesn't even show some of the towns mentioned in the text, or show where sites are located in relation to each other) It's basically a useful list with phone numbers, addresses and hours. The authors assume that the reader will have maps available, since written directions are nonexistent. So, I'm not sure if this a travel guide for native New Englanders, or visitors. Either way, it's damned inconvenient.
It did surprise me with some of the selections - like Harvard's Museum of Culture and Natural History and Myopia Polo; but coming from Boston myself, I noticed there wasn't a heck of a lot "new" in the MA section. In all fairness, it's hard to come up with new kid friendly sites in Boston. Most guidebooks cover that territory exhaustively. Restaurants are featured in each section (excellent idea) but no listing tells you how near the eateries are located to sites. Do you need to make special trips to eat out?
Another quibble I've got is that many of the sites chosen assume that readers are families with older children. However, it is angled for families going on weekends or vacations together, so I can't complain too much about the limited number of listings for those with toddlers in tow.
I sound pretty negative. I bought this book expecting to find lots more listings relevant to my needs (at this time), and am only partially satisfied. However, the authors have done their homework. You can tell that they visited the sites they mention, and that's no small thing. What they do say about the places they visited has a ring of authenticity, and I feel I can trust their word. Stripers and Streamers ReviewRay's book is my favorite on fly fishing for stripers. He keeps it simple, yet includes all the essential info that will get fish on your line. I can think of a couple of pricier hardcovers that take a lot more pages to go over the same info that Ray lays out in a much simpler and more homespun fashion. And despite a prior reviewer's opinion on the patterns included, any self-respecting Northeast saltwater flyfisher knows that the Ray's Fly is a classic along the New England shore. Fly Rodding Estuaries: How to Fish Salt Ponds, Coastal Rivers, Tidal Creeks, and Backwaters ReviewFly Rodding Estuaries is Ed Mitchell's third book and represents a more detailed extension of some of the same topics from his previous work. Thus, if you own either or both of these other fine volumes, ESTUARIES will probably not tell you a lot you do not already know. However, if you are a flyrodder who strives to constantly push your level of expertise, this is not a bad place to go.
The book begins with a definition of estuaries and then discusses various conditions one can expect to encounter and what these mean for the fishing. Variables include tidal range and times, salinity, currents etc and these are important in sorting through otherwise "big empty bodies of water." The book then goes on to break down estuarine bodies of water into several types including salt ponds, lagoon, inlets, bays and coves, tidal creeks and marshes. There are also chapters on getting around in these environments, thoughts on tackle, flies and techniques.
The book is 148 pps long and is attractivley and durably printed on heavy gloss stock. All graphics are in color and add a lot to the otherwise fine content. While the concepts involved are applicable to all estuarine environments, the author's considerable experience in the Northeast, particularly Connecticut and Rhode Island is apparent. It is not however, a "where to go" book, but is instead focused on water types and techniques.
Overall, this book is well worth acquiring. The information is sound and generally well presented. I personally would have liked a little more on nightime approaches and worm hatches, although these are both covered. These are minor points however.
