Frommer's Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewFrommer's guidebook provides an excellent overview of the sights to see, things to do, and places to stay in the three Northern New England states of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. The overviews are very accurate and provide a good description of the places, making the book an excellent way to decide where to go in the areas, and a good guidebook once you arrive.
The biggest problem with the book is that there is not enough individual descriptions of each area. Chances are most tourists are not visiting several regions in all three states, but are choosing one or two to explore in-depth. For example, I went to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park in Maine, an area that was given around 20 pages of coverage. Therefore, more research on the specific areas you plan to visit will probably be necessary to help you get the absolute most out of your trip!Frommer's Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine (Frommer's Complete Guides) Overview

Fodor's New England, 28th Edition (Travel Guide) ReviewI took this 28th Edition with me on my August 10-day tour through Boston, New Hampshire & Maine. I also had with me: Frommer'sVermont, New Hampshire and Maine, However, hands down, Fodor's is the better of the two.
Do note, that both Fodor's and Frommer's target those who have some jingle in their pockets. Thus, if you are a student/backpacker/struggling worker/stock trader who specialized in Bear Stearns, you might want to consider getting Lonely Planet 2008. In Fodor's you will find very few restaurants (under $20) and fewer accommodations (under $80).
This guide starts out with Boston, the jewel of New England's cities. There is an ample seventy plus pages to get you around this great city. As the guide states, "bring your walking shoes," for much of Boston exists to be explored by foot. Throughout Fodor's when you see a "Fodor's Choice" next to a restaurant, hotel or site, do yourself a favor and take time to imbibe.I found Fodor's recommendations in New Hampshire and Maine to be "right on" and the writing was as informative as it was engaging.

Where this guide falters is with its maps (or lack of). There are no city maps for many of the most important cities. In fact outside of the four cities of Boston, Concord, Providence, Newport and Portland, there are no other city maps. This means you are on your own, and most of the time it is not easy find where the restaurants, hotels and sites are. It baffles me why would a quality guide skimp on something as important as maps? Duh.
Wait, the worse blunder is the total absence of anything that can help you understand the culture, customs, the people and politics of New England. AND, there is NO mention of history! I mean, New England does have a serious history, right Fodor's?I mean, does the birthplace of the nation ring a bell?
Wow this could have been a five star guide if they (editors/writer) coulda/woulda done it right. But, even with these significant shortcomings Fodor's still is a useful and reliable guide. Strongly recommendedFodor's New England, 28th Edition (Travel Guide) Overview

Fun Places to Go with Children in New England: 4th Edition, Over 500 Listings, Completely Revised & Updated ReviewA travel book cannot be all things to all people. This book tries, within the parameters set by the authors, to try to find places unique to New England, that are fun for parents and kids. In this, they do succeed.
But because they cover *all* the New England states, each section is necessarily full of capsule information, and no useful maps. (the state map of MA, for example, doesn't even show some of the towns mentioned in the text, or show where sites are located in relation to each other) It's basically a useful list with phone numbers, addresses and hours. The authors assume that the reader will have maps available, since written directions are nonexistent. So, I'm not sure if this a travel guide for native New Englanders, or visitors. Either way, it's damned inconvenient.
It did surprise me with some of the selections - like Harvard's Museum of Culture and Natural History and Myopia Polo; but coming from Boston myself, I noticed there wasn't a heck of a lot "new" in the MA section. In all fairness, it's hard to come up with new kid friendly sites in Boston. Most guidebooks cover that territory exhaustively. Restaurants are featured in each section (excellent idea) but no listing tells you how near the eateries are located to sites. Do you need to make special trips to eat out?
Another quibble I've got is that many of the sites chosen assume that readers are families with older children. However, it is angled for families going on weekends or vacations together, so I can't complain too much about the limited number of listings for those with toddlers in tow.
I sound pretty negative. I bought this book expecting to find lots more listings relevant to my needs (at this time), and am only partially satisfied. However, the authors have done their homework. You can tell that they visited the sites they mention, and that's no small thing. What they do say about the places they visited has a ring of authenticity, and I feel I can trust their word. Sea Kayaking along the New England Coast, 2nd ReviewA delightful collection of ocean kayaking trips along the entire New England coast, from Maine to Connecticut. The book describes more than 30 trips in detail: put-in spots, suggested route, possible lunch spots, scenery, caution areas, campsites, and local-knowledge items such as what tide is required for a passage, plus post-paddling eating establishments. Venn covers both day trips and multi-day camping expeditions. The author has clearly done her research in planning each trip, incorporating her own knowledge and experience with that of local paddlers who have done these trips for years. Venn's style is easy to read and follow, and if you have a navigational chart of the area it is very easy to map her suggested route using her text descriptions and the maps provided. The introduction contains very brief overviews of such general topics as equipment, navigation, and rescues, but because of the limited space delegated them, these topics are best covered elsewhere. Overall, this is an immensely useful book with enough detail so you know what to expect before you drive to the boat launch. Mobil 2009 Travel Guide New England (Forbes Travel Guide New England) ReviewI toured New England August 2008 and I took this guide with me (along with Frommer's and Fodor's). In my two weeks of driving through out this area I found the Mobil guide useless.
Up front, the guide is incomplete - for an example: Portsmouth, NH, where there are scores of great restaurants (travel.yahoo lists 564) the Mobil guide does not list any restaurants. Not one!
The guide often gives a recommendation but with no description, IE the write up of the recommended "Mike's City Diner" in Boston has two words, "American Menu". That's all.
Mobil Travel Guides give out Five-Star & Four-Star to the country's best Restaurant and Hotels. You want to know where and which ones - right? Well, good luck, as there is nothing to help you find them in the book. Also, there are no maps to help you to find the restaurants or hotels they do recommend. So when you get to a challenging city like Boston you're lost, unless you know the city or pay for a cab. Not good at all.
This is a guide that critical critiques other establishments but did not apply the standard of "excellence" to its own publication. What a disappointment. Black Portsmouth: Three Centuries of African-American Heritage (Revisiting New England) ReviewI grew up in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, immersed in the Colonial history the city proudly puts on display. Turns out that the city hid a key part of its history: Portsmouth was a major player in the slave trade. University of New Hampshire professor Valerie Cunningham compiled the research over several years. Author Mark J. Sammons used that research as the basis of this book. He does an admirable job detailing the extent of the slave trade, the roles that various prominent businessmen and statesmen (including Gov. John Langdon, a signer of the US Constitution), played in the trade, as well as the personal toll the trade took on enslaved Africans. Sammons also does an admirable job of tracing the evolution of Portsmouth and its surrounding communities. Best Hikes with Kids: Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine ReviewWhat better way can you think of to connect with your kids other than actually getting out and doing something with them like taking a hike? We're not talking hiking to a fast food restaurant to get an unhealthy meal and a little toy that will soon be lost in the shuffle or end up in your yard sale or chewed up by your dog. We're talking long term benefits, emotionally and physically.
According to the authors, hiking is "healthier than television, cheaper than downhill skiing . . . is within everyone's capabilities and will appeal to toddlers and teenagers, preschoolers and parents." This book also gives pointers on how to make hiking fun and enjoyable for the whole family. There are eighty-five hikes listed: twenty-four in Vermont, twenty-nine in New Hampshire and thirty-two in Maine.
There is a map legend in the front of the book. Scattered throughout the preliminary pages are boxed materials listing the pages containing "best hikes" for seeing a natural waterfall, following a stream, brook or river, beach walking or coast walking, investigating a pond or lake, swimming at a swimming hold or public beach, investigating caves, boulders, or unique geologic features, a summit or scenic vista (many with towers), for visiting a nature center or visitor center, loop hikes, overnight camping, with leashed dogs. You can effectively tailor your hike to your entire family, including your dog if you so desire!
Each hike listed has four main sections to browse and consider:
1. Before You Go . . . referral to a USGS map of the area and a telephone number to access current weather conditions
2.About the Hike . . . a day or overnight hike, how challenging it is for children, dates the hike can be undertaken, how long it is in miles, hiking time, high point/elevation gain and symbols to indicate what to expect
3. Specific directions on how to get there
4. A dialogue on what to expect while you are on the trail
This is a marvelous book! Whether you want to grab your picnic basket and take a leisurely stroll or do some serious hiking, the choice is yours. My choice would be the Ocean Trail, a mere 0.6 miles to Thunder Hole, one of my childhood favorites.Best Hikes with Kids: Vermont, New Hampshire & Maine Overview

Backroads of New England: Your Guide To New England's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures ReviewWhen fall comes in New England, the trees turn into a splendid mass of reds, oranges and yellows that temporarily distract us from the coming winter. At the same time, the first fresh snowfalls have a special beauty that New Englanders love as well. But the first blush of spring causes a special joy to burst out from our hearts. In the lazy days of summer, we love to watch the wind blow the grasses and trees from languid poses.
At any one of those times, I find myself thinking how much fun it would be to see some new sights in the context of those favorite New England conditions. In the forty years I've lived in New England, I've found many of my favorite locations purely by accident. The back roads are always the best. But I don't have the time to randomly drive all the back roads to find the best ones.
That's where Backroads of New England comes in. Kim Knox Beckius has found 30 delightful drives over back road that mix scenery, history, culture and just plain fun. I have taken about half of the drives in the book, so I can swear by those. I am looking forward to doing the rest now that I know where to go.
How can I tell I would like the others? First, Ms. Beckius provides helpful essays about where to begin, what to see, and what to stop and do along the way. She even includes some suggestions for hiking to beautiful waterfalls. Second, William H. Johnson's gorgeous photographs colorfully illuminate the main sights for each drive. Whether you love covered bridges, snow-capped peaks, delightful streams, pounding surf, or mysterious vistas, you can page through the book to find the places that speak mostly fervently to your soul.
The book is also organized by state. So if you are planning to go just to Maine and arrive by air in Portland, you can simply focus on the Maine trips and those in New Hampshire and northeast Massachusetts that are not too far away. If you live in New York, and want to drive for no more than two hours, you can focus on that radius in western Connecticut and Massachusetts.
I have been looking at travel guides for New England for many years. I've never seen a finer one for back roads adventures.

A Time Before New Hampshire: The Story of a Land and Native Peoples ReviewAmong other things I do, I sell fossils and minerals part time, and at an agricultural fair this past summer, my friend Gary lent me his copy of this book. I can not tell you what a pleasure it has been reading this work. The book covers from earliest geological times through the 1700's. Michael Caduto has done an excellent job of outlining all facets of NH history as best it can be reconstructed without benefit of written cultural history. If I could, I would give this book 5 stars for a fascinating read, 5 stars for creating a believable description of what life was like for our native peoples, and 5 stars for the resource information at the back of the book, which includes listings of NH museums, native language pronunciation, wildlife present during the times described, and so on.
