The Architectural Guidebook to New York City ReviewThe most obvious reason to replace the AIA Guide with this book is size. Dealing with only one borough enables the author to go into more detail while reducing the size of the book. The AIA Guide is about half the size of a large yellow pages. The Architectural Guidebook to NYC is about the size of an average novel. That makes a big difference when you're stuffing it into your backpack or purse for a trip on subway or foot.
The more extensive entries are very welcome. In Union Square with this book and a view of the surrounding buildings, I was able to spend a pleasant and informative hour on a park bench, for free. That's a better bargain than the Staten Island Ferry.
Morrone keeps the architect's jargon to a minimum and knows his subject well. The historical insights and views on clashing aesthetics were skillfully presented. He pointed out a couple of museums of very high caliber that I wasn't even aware of. A book like this is a perfect jumping off point for thousands of topics, from neighborhoods to cultures to politics to construction.
I would encourage him to write similar books on the other buroughs, or better yet, an even more detailed work on each of the neighborhoods of Manhattan: each of them has at least a thousand buildings worth writing about.The Architectural Guidebook to New York City Overview

The Art of the Japanese Garden ReviewI ordered this book somewhat "blind" without having seen it in a bookstore, etc. When it arrived, I must say that I was thrilled with the quality of the text, photos and other illustrations. The book thoroughly covers the basic history, principles and aesthetics of Japanese Gardens. Then it takes an in-depth look at some of the finest gardens of each type found in Japan. Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture ReviewIn this book, the reader is exposed to the integrated building concept through the exposition of theory, and the presentation ofindividual case studies. The case studies are organized into seven categories: Laboratories, Offices, Airport Terminals, Pavilions, Residential Architecture, High Tech Architecture, and Green Architecture.
The author states, "What gravity is to structure...ecology is to Green." Through the case studies, icons of modern architecture, located all over the planet, are examined via an analysis of their systems. Through this vehicle, the reader learns from the masters.
Each case study starts with a project description accompanied by a fact sheet. Program is broken down into client, brief, site, and climate. The case studies are enriched with biographical information on the individual architects. The analyses continue with details of intent, critical technical issues, etc., and conclude with a discussion of the success of the different aspects of the project.

A mastery of the concepts in Leonard Bachman's book can arm the architect with valid thought processes to free his/her design intuition from the constraints prevalent in early 21st century construction management.

Weekend Utopia: Modern Living in the Hamptons ReviewI'm a bit mystified by the comments below that seem to implicate this book and its author in what the Hamptons have become. To the contrary, Weekend Utopia celebrates happier days pre-mega mansions: when culture and architecture and some fascinating characters created some truly exceptional houses, most of them modest in scale. In fact, today's Hamptons home-builders could learn a lesson or two from this book (like small can be very beautiful), and stop the further despoilment of what the Hamptons used to be: something Weekend Utopia shows with great clarity and style. The Chicago School of Architecture: A History of Commercial and Public Building in the Chicago Area, 1875-1925 ReviewThis is Condit's most significant contribution to the history of architecture-- a must-read for anyone interested in Chicago, its architecture, and the broader themes of American vernacular inventiveness in design and engineering. Condit is not forgiving of the reader-- prepare to learn more than you might have planned about caissons, load-bearing structural systems, windows, etc.-- but on the other hand there's little or no sense of being instructed in "good taste" here, either. Condit makes a plain-speaking argument and provides the information to support it. Those who wish to delve deeper will want to look to Condit's two-volume study of architecture in Chicago, long out of print but still available used. I purchased this book as source material for 3D modeling, and all the hand drawn illustrations are simply amazing! Many interior, exterior and close-up shots of Japanese architecture. Several floor plans and isometric views of various homes and temples.
Having only recieved my book the day before, I have not had a chance to read it from cover to cover, but what I have read was informative and well written. While you may not be able to build your very own "to code" Japanese home with this book, as a source of information and inspiration, it's a tremendous book!What is Japanese Architecture: A Survey of Traditional Japanese Architecture Overview

The Autobiography of an Idea (Dover Architecture) ReviewAny student of architecture, particularly the modern movement, will enjoy reading this work by the mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright and, arguably, the father of modern architecture. In it, Louis Sullivan writes about himself growing from a child into a man, and recounts his personal drive, his fascination with nature, his love of man, bridges, engineering, and buildings, and his desire to create something new without the help of the dusty books of Neo-classicism. Louis Sullivan was never known for his modesty, and the tone of this book is nothing less than self-celebratory, which lends an overall optimistic tone to it. A bonus is the extensive photo plate section - it's interesting to see how his works grew as he did. Unfortunately the plates don't coincide with the text, which is the major flaw in this edition. Chinese Architecture ReviewThis survey of pre-modern Chinese architecture is very similar to the other books ("Chinese Sculpture" and "Chinese Painting") in the Yale series: it's big and expensive; generously photographed in color; multi-authored; organized by usage type (palace, temple, other) within dynasty; and consists essentially of a parade of individual items (buildings, in this case) with commentary. If that's your thing, then go for it!
The book is very skimpy on technical topics like bracketing, joinery, roofing, and decorations. Its lack of a glossary, and its hit-and-miss index, are additional minuses. There are hardly any architectural drawings. It does have numerous site diagrams, although *none* of them has a distance scale attached.
In short, this book omits an awful lot of needful information, just in order to survey an endless parade of individual buildings. That's why I think it will be more often consulted in a university or public library, than purchased by individuals.Chinese Architecture Overview

Robert A. M. Stern: Houses and Gardens ReviewThis book on Robert Stern, the latest in a series, is very well executed. Mr. Stern really has a knack for anachronistic grand homes, they are a throw back to another time, but with all the modern luxuries money can buy. Stern has a real feel for the kind of gardens that complement each type of home, and the interaction between the two is often quite breathtaking. The images in this book are first rate and the homes are amazing. Exploring Martha's Vineyard by Bike, Foot, and Kayak, 2nd ReviewI've been vacationing on the Vineyard for about a decade - but only last year picked up this great book, packed with terrific suggestions on places to go to see the "real" Vineyard -- on foot, on bike and even on kayak. The format is easy to follow - providing local history, step-by-step directions, and details on what you'll see along the way, such as the types of flowers, birds and trees. There seems to be a wide variety of activities (I didn't try any of the kayaking options), geared to people of all ages and fitness levels. The book is very well-researched, and since the summer I've recommended it to many Vineyard residents as well as to vacationers - there's something in it for everyone. I did found it helpful to tear out pages of interest and bring them with me, as the book is a sizable one. An Elegant Wilderness: Great Camps and Grand Lodges of the Adirondacks (The Architecture of Leisure) ReviewI really wanted to like this book. Which isn't to say it doesn't have good points. Written in collaboration with the Adirondack Museum, the author drew upon the museum's archives to assemble a very nice array of period photographs. The text is informative. In particular it discuses each camp's chain of ownership across the generations. This is material which is not readily available.
So why was I somewhat disappointed? For a book written in collaboration with a museum, I would have expected something a little more scholarly. In particular, Elegant Wilderness is lacking with respect to maps and diagrams. At the very least there should have been an overall map of the Adirondacks indicating the location of each camp. Also sorely needed were sketch plans of the layout of each camp. A half a dozen photos for each camp, with no clear indication of orientation, made it impossible to visualize the overall arrangement of the buildings.
One example of this: the day before I purchased this book, I took the guided tour of the Sagamore camp near Raquette Lake. I was struck by the layout of the buildings, the contrast between the "upper" and "lower" camps, the isolation of the staff buildings, the magnificent setting of the main camp and dining hall overlooking the lake, etc. But when I looked at the Sagamore chapter in Elegant Wilderness, none of this was apparent. I could glean little about how the buildings related to one another and how the camp overall was oriented. Something that a simple sketch plan could have alleviated.
Let me be clear: I don't regret purchasing Elegant Wilderness. I have a long standing interested in the Adirondacks and the Great Camps and I usually reflexively buy anything related to that topic. In that sense this books fits in well with my interests and I enjoyed perusing it. I just wish it had better realized its potential.

We were delighted with all of the recommendations. Though we stayed in Hyannis we traveled and visited towns across the Cape and took a day trip to Nantuckett. We visited several (4-5) 'Fodor's Choice' restaurants of various price levels and were delighted with what we found! We also tried out several beaches based on Fodor's recomendations and our four year old had an excellent time.
