The Rough Guide to Beijing 3 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) ReviewThis book was great--I don't know how we would have managed without it--it gives great, accurate information about places to go (not the nightclubs though), had great maps. We went to some of the most amazing restaurants that we would never have been able to find if not for the really detailed directions in the book (for example, this famous, but out-of-the-way roast duck restaurant hidden in the depths of the hutongs at Qianmen.) The maps were very useful, especially to show taxi drivers where you want to go, though you have to read the pinyin names to them since they can't read english. But definitely, you can't go wrong in Beijing with this book.The Rough Guide to Beijing 3 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Overview

Inscribed Landscapes: Travel Writing from Imperial China ReviewThe editorial review is quite complete as to the contents of "Inscribed Landscapes", but I'd like to give future readers a more general impression that I was left with:
I thoroughly enjoyed Richard E. Strassberg's book as an introduction to the combined arts of Chinese travel writing, calligraphy, painting, and woodcut print making. Many of China's greatest writers are represented in chronological order, sometimes yielding interesting results when the same place is described centuries apart. I am not an expert in Chinese literature, so I compared impressions with my Chinese friends. Their only reservations were the translations of the poetry, which is always problematical. The translations in this book are good for description but one might want to compare other translations for different perspectives. (See "Chinese Poetry: An Anthology of Major Modes and Genres" by Wai-Lim Yip to gain a broader appreciation of Chinese literature and the difficulties of its translation).
This book, unexpectedly, piqued my interest in the art of calligraphy, as well as that of landscape art, too. Richard Strassberg judiciously uses examples of some of China's best art work to illustrate many of the described landscapes.
Finally, I now find myself harboring a deep desire to visit, in person, many of the inscribed landscapes and picture them anew. This is a book that will encourage you to visit both a long lost China, and that which you can still find.

The Rough Guide to Beijing (Rough Guide Beijing) Reviewdecent info on sites. very few restaurant listings.
not only are there only 5 or 6 maps in the whole book, but several of them are flat out wrong. especially the sanlitun map. somebody at rough guide doesn't know east from west. we wasted hours looking for places that were on the other side of the street. also, would it kill them to put shopping listings on the maps? why only hotels and food?
overall rough guides are my 2nd option after timeout. but the timeout beijing book is almost 4 years old, thus useless. lonely planet is ok too (much better maps) but many of their listings are terrible (aimed at travelers who buy tourist crap and seek out bad western food everywhere they go). since we've had luck w/rough guide before, and since this beijing book was brand new, we expected good things. very disappointed. their country guides are ok. their city guides are awful.The Rough Guide to Beijing (Rough Guide Beijing) Overview

Chinese Architecture ReviewThis survey of pre-modern Chinese architecture is very similar to the other books ("Chinese Sculpture" and "Chinese Painting") in the Yale series: it's big and expensive; generously photographed in color; multi-authored; organized by usage type (palace, temple, other) within dynasty; and consists essentially of a parade of individual items (buildings, in this case) with commentary. If that's your thing, then go for it!
The book is very skimpy on technical topics like bracketing, joinery, roofing, and decorations. Its lack of a glossary, and its hit-and-miss index, are additional minuses. There are hardly any architectural drawings. It does have numerous site diagrams, although *none* of them has a distance scale attached.
In short, this book omits an awful lot of needful information, just in order to survey an endless parade of individual buildings. That's why I think it will be more often consulted in a university or public library, than purchased by individuals.Chinese Architecture Overview
