Planetwalker: How to Change Your World One Step at a Time ReviewWitnessing a tragedy has often been the catalyst that changed someone's life and sent them in a direction that would ultimately be a force for good in the world. Such is the case of John Francis, who witnessed an oil spill in San Francisco Bay in 1971. He was so moved by the consequences of the spill that he stopped using all forms of motorized transportation and began a 20+ year odyssey on foot that took him across America. He became a tirelss advocate for the environment and earned a bachelor, masters, and Ph.D. along the way.
The expression "He talks the talk and walks the walk" unequivocally applies to John Francis, Ph.D.
His writing is lyrical, easy to read and expresses his philosophy as well as his strong and continuing commitment to the environment. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking a story of adventure, commitment, and beautiful use of the English language.Planetwalker: How to Change Your World One Step at a Time Overview

Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island (Adventure Guides Series) ReviewAs the title suggests, the emphasis in this book is on adventure, and the authors deliver. They supply details about an amazing array of activities on the Big Island: diving, hiking, camping, golfing, kayaking, whale-watching and many more.
For tourists whose idea of adventure is lounging by the pool there is useful information, too; sooner or later, you have to eat. The authors have evaluated dozens (maybe hundreds) of restaurants and shops all around the island and give advice on places not to miss, as well as a few to avoid.
Written in an informal yet informative style, Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island also has abundant maps and photos. Anyone who is planning a trip to Hawaii would benefit from this book. I've already been there, but now I can't wait to go back!Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island (Adventure Guides Series) Overview

Inscribed Landscapes: Travel Writing from Imperial China ReviewThe editorial review is quite complete as to the contents of "Inscribed Landscapes", but I'd like to give future readers a more general impression that I was left with:
I thoroughly enjoyed Richard E. Strassberg's book as an introduction to the combined arts of Chinese travel writing, calligraphy, painting, and woodcut print making. Many of China's greatest writers are represented in chronological order, sometimes yielding interesting results when the same place is described centuries apart. I am not an expert in Chinese literature, so I compared impressions with my Chinese friends. Their only reservations were the translations of the poetry, which is always problematical. The translations in this book are good for description but one might want to compare other translations for different perspectives. (See "Chinese Poetry: An Anthology of Major Modes and Genres" by Wai-Lim Yip to gain a broader appreciation of Chinese literature and the difficulties of its translation).
This book, unexpectedly, piqued my interest in the art of calligraphy, as well as that of landscape art, too. Richard Strassberg judiciously uses examples of some of China's best art work to illustrate many of the described landscapes.
Finally, I now find myself harboring a deep desire to visit, in person, many of the inscribed landscapes and picture them anew. This is a book that will encourage you to visit both a long lost China, and that which you can still find.

The Ice King: Frederic Tudor and His Circle (Maritime) ReviewThe Ice King is a delightful read for anyone interested in an important, but lost part of American history. The story of the ups and downs of the ice business are in many ways similar to other American industries, but there are no physical remnants to be seen in American cities. The book is a good starting point for historical research on a middle or high school level. The Ice King: Frederic Tudor and His Circle (Maritime) Overview

The Waterstone (Reading Together) ReviewThis delightful book was - and yet is - the best piece of children's fantasy I have ever read. And I have read A LOT of children's fantasy (Cooper, McKillip, McKinley, Hunter, Jacques, Lewis, Rowling, White, Banks, O'Brien, Weis and Hickman, Pullamn, Paolini, etc., and many of these authors I would NOT recommend.) But I cannot say enough to recommend this outstanding author and her work.
First, unlike others who could not put this book down, I was so captivated by Rebecca Rupp's colorful, miniature world and its sensitive, hilarious characters that I read the story as sloooooowwwwly as possible, often relishing favorite passages multiple times before moving on.
Inspired by an imaginary nature God (named Pondleweed) that the author's son created as a child, this is the tale of a young Fisher boy (a pixie-ish and frog-like tribe of tiny people) who discovers a wonderful gift, and embraces the responsibility that gift entails to recover the Waterstone from the evil Nixies (water sprites.) The nature of the hopes, dreams, fears, frustrations, and challenges of Tad, Birdie and the others they meet and journey with will prove entirely recognizable to any child, as well as any adult who remembers struggling through childhood. Especially wonderful are Rupp's detailed portraits of the Fisher/Hunter/Digger Tribes and their cultures. Her interpretations of various forest animals, in particular the hawk with his hunting song and the weasels with their "earth-soft minds" provide some of the best moments in the story, effectively counteracting the otherwise heart-wrenching features.
With its rich language and vivid imgery, the text is intelligent enough to capture any adult reader's imagination without threatening a young reader's confidence. The plot is easy to follow, yet complex enough to keep the reader guessing until the end, and the climax is enough to touch any but the most hardened souls (yes, I cried and cried and cried, but how noble the sacrifice. That is all I can say.)
Though I did not want this story to end, it left me with a tidy conclusion and a necessary (although bittersweet) sense of security, which is essential to any child's world. Alas, all will be well with the Fishers, Hunters, and Diggers from now on (unless there is a sequal....) But, for now, how privileged we are to have such upstanding, quality writing at our fingertips. With originality and style so perfectly complete, Rupp's work is completely perfect. The Waterstone (Reading Together) Overview

Into the Wild ReviewThere is little suspense (in the traditional sense of the word) in Krakauer's Into the Wild, as anyone who reads the synopsis or picks up the book instantly learns that it is the story of a young man, Chris McCandless, who ventures into the Alaskan Wilderness and who never gets out. Chris' body is found in an abandoned bus used by moose hunters as a makeshift lodge, and Krakauer skillfully attempts to retrace his steps in an effort both to understand what went wrong, and to figure out what made McCandless give away his money, his car, and head off into Denali National Forest in the first place.
His book was one of the most haunting, unforgettable reads in recent years for me. I was mezmerized by passages in the author's other best-selling masterpiece Into Thin Air, such as the passage involving stranded and doomed guide Rob Hall, near the Everest summit, talking to his pregnant wife via satellite phone to discuss names for their unborn child. However, I was unprepared for the depths of emotion felt in reading Into the Wild - it literally kept me up at nights, not just reading but thinking about the book in the dark.
Some reviewers criticized the book because they thought McCandless demonstrated a naive and unhealthy lack of respect for the Alaskan wilderness. This is no hike on the Appalachian Trail - Chris was literally dropped off by a trucker into the middle of nowhere, with no provision stores, guides, or means of assistance nearby at his disposal. He had a big bag of rice and a book about native plants, designed to tell him which plants and berries he could eat. "How could he have been so stupid?", they ask.
Well, I certainly didn't feel compelled to give away my belongings, pack some rice and a Tolstoy novel and walk into the woods after reading the book, but the author does a remarkable job of exploring McCandless the person, including passages derived from interviews with the many poeple whose lives he touched in his odyssey as he drove and then hitch-hiked cross country from his well-to-do suburban home. Some of the more touching parts of the book involved tearful reminisces by some of these old aquaintances when they learned he had perished.
Krakauer also throws in for good measure an illuminating passage about a similar death-defying climb that he foolishly attempted at about the same age as McCandless, with little training and preparation, providing insight into what makes a person attempt a dangerous climb or hike. He even tells several fascinating tales, all of them true, of other recreational hikers who were stranded in the wilderness.
By the end of the book, I thought I understood McCandless' character, and I thought Krakauer was probably right in putting his finger on exactly what caused his death. I was moved by his plight regardless of his possible foolishness in venturing into Denali, and the final scenes involving Chris' family were emotionally devastating. You need not be an outdoorsman to appreciate it, and in fact unlike Into Thin Air the book is completely accessible to those who know nothing about the subject. I think this book is destined to become a classic.Into the Wild Overview

R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH ReviewI loved Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH every since I was in middle school. I read an excerpt from it in a literature textbook and had to read the entire novel. It became an all-time favorite of mine!
I was well into adulthood when I found out the daughter of the late author Robert C. O'Brien had written two sequels. I eagerly bought them and read them. I can't tell you what a joy it was to go back and visit those beloved characters again and pick up where the first book left off. I have to applaud Ms. Conly for continuing this series in the way she did. You really do believe it is the same author writing them! This was a very fitting tribute to her father. The way the original book ended, you know O'Brien intended to write a sequel, had he lived.
I enjoyed this third installment for the most part and liked the introduction of the two human characters. The only real problem I have with R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH is the fact that you have animals talking to humans. I can suspend disbelief when animals are talking to other animals, but with people it is a bit of a stretch, even if the animal is super-intelligent. But that is just a minor complaint, and this is a children's novel, right? So it can be overlooked. I would recommend this book to anyone 9 to 13 years old, but only after they have read the first two books. I did like it, but not quite as much as the others.
Now if only Jane Leslie Conly would continue the series! Why stop at a trilogy? And why haven't these books been released as a high quality hardback box set? Oh well, maybe one day..R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH Overview

My Enemy's Tears: The Witch of Northampton Review"My Enemy's Tears" is a gripping story of two young women growing up in 17th century New England, the different paths their lives take, and how one eventually becomes embittered enough to accuse the other of witchcraft. The author knows how to tell a story, and her characters are vivid and memorable. Williams recreates the feel of 17th century New England where people are obsessed by religion and "the invisible world" where Satan roams to catch souls. In common with several recent histories, Williams shows how the stresses of frontier life, including the "Indian wars" of the period, heighten settlers' fears of the supernatural. But the heart of the tale lies in the telling psychological portraits of the two women and their very different responses to the vicissitudes of their existance. In a fascinating afterward, Williams explains that her heroine is actually an ancestor of hers; how, as a child, she was fascinated by the story of how her relative had "triumphed" over false accusations of neighbors. In researching the book, Williams discovered a more complicated and less triumphal life, but one which will not easily be forgotten once read. "My Enemy's Tears" is a first-rate historical novel. My Enemy's Tears: The Witch of Northampton Overview

AMC's Best Day Hikes Near New York City: Four-season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey ReviewFull disclosure -- I am the author's brother. That said, I genuinely enjoyed this book, and more importantly, have used it in planning local hikes for my two boys (ages six and three). The write-ups go beyond "follow the path for three miles and turn left at the bridge by the stream," as many guide books do. Readers get wonderful context to help enjoy an excellent selection of local hikes -- a great antidote for those of us in the NYC metro area who feel like there is no outdoors left. There is -- you just have to know where to go to find it. Bootleggers, Lobstermen & Lumberjacks: Fifty of the Grittiest Moments in the History of Hardscrabble New England ReviewGritty indeed. These stories paint a fascinating portrait of a fascinating place (one where I'm lucky enough to live). Matthew P. Mayo brings the compelling writing style he's developed in his fiction to some of the most intriguing tales of old New England. Apparently, he's lived in several states in our nation's northeast corner - he definitely seems to know the people and places. This is rich stuff. I felt like I was learning a lot, but at the same time I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to check out some of his novels now.

Moon New England Hiking: The Complete Guide to More Than 400 of the Best Hikes in New England (Moon Outdoors) ReviewThis is an excellent guide. All the classic hikes are in there. The best part is that all the hikes are rated, and I have found that they are very accurately rated for both difficulty and scenic value.
There are no hiking maps in the book though, so be warned about that. For about 300 of the 400 trails, that's totally fine and you likely will not get lost. You should get a separate map for any of the longer-distance or above-treeline hikes. I highly recommend buying a separate map for the White Mountains and another for Acadia National Park.
Get out and enjoy this gorgeous region!

100 Classic Hikes in New England: Maine / New Hampshire / Vermont / Massachusetts / Rhode Island / Connecticut ReviewJeff Romano's 100 Classic Hikes in New England is an easy way to pack my gear, pick a hiking spot, and get on the trail. He has done a thorough job listing multiple options for length, duration, difficulty, and fitness levels throughout New England.
Particularly, I like the following about the book:
- DURABLE stitch binding, printed on laminate heavy paper. It has been stuffed in my backpack and used for navigation on several hikes with very little sign of wear.
- CONSISTENT RATING of hikes: I was able to correctly guess my time and ability to complete hikes from ratings. While I do go faster than an average hiker, I could properly estimate how the rating of a hike applies to fitness level.
- VARIETY of hikes difficulty ranging from some I was able to do with young children to overnight backpacking trips.
- TOPO MAPS included to give an indication of the elevation profile and terrain.
- DIVERSE geography across the six states, high mountains, near the ocean, and on islands.
- DETAILED descriptions and pictures to help prepare for the hike and navigate the trail.
I only wish the book had included a CD with GPS files for each hike. I did buy the National Geographics's TOPO software used in the book, but it had very few of the trails marked in it. For the most part I had to copy the trails by hand from the book.
While some will argue that one or another of their favorite hikes belong in the list of 100 classics, I say we are fortunate to live in an area so rich in beautiful hikes. Take this book with you and enjoy it.
PS. The video is from Rugged Mountain (hike #17) in CT.
