My Enemy's Tears: The Witch of Northampton Review"My Enemy's Tears" is a gripping story of two young women growing up in 17th century New England, the different paths their lives take, and how one eventually becomes embittered enough to accuse the other of witchcraft. The author knows how to tell a story, and her characters are vivid and memorable. Williams recreates the feel of 17th century New England where people are obsessed by religion and "the invisible world" where Satan roams to catch souls. In common with several recent histories, Williams shows how the stresses of frontier life, including the "Indian wars" of the period, heighten settlers' fears of the supernatural. But the heart of the tale lies in the telling psychological portraits of the two women and their very different responses to the vicissitudes of their existance. In a fascinating afterward, Williams explains that her heroine is actually an ancestor of hers; how, as a child, she was fascinated by the story of how her relative had "triumphed" over false accusations of neighbors. In researching the book, Williams discovered a more complicated and less triumphal life, but one which will not easily be forgotten once read. "My Enemy's Tears" is a first-rate historical novel. My Enemy's Tears: The Witch of Northampton Overview
