Best Loop Hikes: Washington (Best Hikes) Review"Nothing pleases hikers more than finding a great wilderness trail that allows them to wander in circles, never touching the same bit of trail twice. Hiking, after all, is hard work and it's nice when every step takes you into new country, with new scenery. Out-and-back hikes are okay, but a great loop hike? That's the holy grail of the trail world." -- from the introduction
That pretty much sums up this excellent guide to loop hikes in Washington State.
The novice hiker, or someone like me who hasn't been on the trails in a while, will benefit from the up-to-date information in the introduction. Topics include: permits and regulations, general trail etiquette, low-impact camping, water, clean-up, bears, cougars, weather, and gear.
A partial Washington State map near the front of the book helps the reader to locate the numbered hikes, ranging from as far west as Cape Alava on the Olympic Peninsula to Horseshoe Basin/Windy Peak in the Okanogan National Forest in the north central part of the state. The majority of these hikes are in the Cascade Mountains, from North Cascades National Park to Mount Adams in the south.
A two-page guide will help the reader select "hikes by interest," including panoramic views, solitude, old-growth forest, dog-friendly trails, kid-friendly trails, wildflower viewing, waterfalls and rivers, lakes, wildlife viewing and natural splendor. One drawback to this fine volume is that there is no simple way to find an easy dayhike without turning to the page for each individual hike.
These loops vary in length from short dayhikes to overnight backpack trips that can take several days.
Each hike selection begins with a short summary. The text provides clear directions on how to get to the trailhead, a description of each hike and things you might see along the way. A small topographical trail map is provided for each hike, and the book is scattered with black and white photos of sights one might encounter on the trail.
An appendix contains helpful contact information and web addresses to parks, ranger districts and volunteer groups mentioned in the book.
This is an excellent addition to the Mountaineers catalog of guidebooks. If you're looking for a loop hike in the Pacific Northwest--whether short or long--take a look at this volume.Best Loop Hikes: Washington (Best Hikes) Overview

Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island (Adventure Guides Series) ReviewAs the title suggests, the emphasis in this book is on adventure, and the authors deliver. They supply details about an amazing array of activities on the Big Island: diving, hiking, camping, golfing, kayaking, whale-watching and many more.
For tourists whose idea of adventure is lounging by the pool there is useful information, too; sooner or later, you have to eat. The authors have evaluated dozens (maybe hundreds) of restaurants and shops all around the island and give advice on places not to miss, as well as a few to avoid.
Written in an informal yet informative style, Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island also has abundant maps and photos. Anyone who is planning a trip to Hawaii would benefit from this book. I've already been there, but now I can't wait to go back!Adventure Guide: Hawaii the Big Island (Adventure Guides Series) Overview

Rail-Trails New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont ReviewThere are now more than 13,00 miles of open rail-trails across the country. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is an organization of more than 100,000 members and a leading advocate for trail and greenway 'recycling' of obsolete railroad corridors and rights of way. The official guidebook of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, "Rail-Trails: New England" is a thoroughly 'user friendly' guide to railroad related trails in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Profusely illustrated with maps, as well as black-and-white photographs, "Rail-Trails: New England" is the perfect planning guide for biking or hiking along pathways created from unused railroad corridors that have been converted to recreational use by the public. some rail-trails are paved and run through scenic parts of New England townships, others are unpaved paths through scenic countrysides. Enhanced with detailed maps for every rail-trail (plus driving directions to trailheads), "Rail-Trails: New England" also features icons indicating each trail's use, along with succinct descriptions written by truly knowledgeable and articulate rail-trail experts. If you are planning to avail yourself of the recreational and exercise opportunities of rail-trails anywhere in the New England region, then begin with a careful browse through the pages of "Rail-Trails: New England"!Rail-Trails New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont Overview

Best Hikes with Kids: Oregon ReviewMy father-in-law picked this book up at Costco. We keep it in our glove box for spontaneous adventures with the kids (I have a 10 and 12 year old). We've hiked several trails using the book as our guide. There are some wonderful hikes we would have missed out on had we not had the book. The book lists the length and difficulty of the trail as well as the view and setting along the way (It's nice to know ahead of time if the hike is worth the effort). With a detailed description of hiking trails all over Oregon, this book would benefit even those without children; it's a great guide for young and old alike!Best Hikes with Kids: Oregon Overview

Desolation Wilderness and the South Lake Tahoe Basin ReviewThis is a nice book with a serious flaw. To understand this flaw, think about why one might buy a hiking book. Reason 1: to find out what trails exist in a given region, and how to find those trails (ie, the directions to the trailhead for each trail). Reason 2: to get detailed information about specific trails.
For me, the most important information about a specific trail is the distance in miles to one or more points on the trail and the elevations at various points along the trail. If we are deciding which trail to walk, we need to know how difficult the trail is. Difficulty is a function of BOTH distance and elevation change.
Remarkably, this book provides no information about elevations at any point on any trail described, not even the elevation at the trailhead or at the furthest destination reached on the trail. This is unusual among hiking books, and it is a SERIOUS OMISSION.
The book includes small reproductions of portions of topographic maps at the back, but the elevation numbers on the maps are rare (mainly summits) and it would take a long time to decipher the contours for each trail. I pay money for a book assuming someone has already done that for me, and summarized the information in the description of each trail.
Why not follow the example of the Yosemite National Park Service and other hiking books, and include a "trail profile" image for each hike? This image shows distance on the horizontal axis and elevation on the vertical axis, with text labels to indicate specific landmarks or trail junctions along the way. If there are side trails or alternate routes, choose one route for the main profile and add separate profiles below that for the segments of the trail that differ. Or at least state the elevations for the final destination of each side trail.
Aside from this serious flaw, it seems like a good book. The trail descriptions appear to be clear, and the organization and layout are good. The photographs of lakes set in granite bowls are superb.Desolation Wilderness and the South Lake Tahoe Basin Overview

Take A Hike Family Walks in the Rochester (NY) Area (Second Edition) (Trail Guidebooks) ReviewBought the book yesterday and did the 8.2 mile hike on the Hojack Trail in Webster where I live. It was easy to find, the history about the trail in the book was interesting and we are looking forward to finding other hikes around our home we didn't know were there! Very user friendly book. After each hike there is a place where you can jot down notes, great for keeping track of hikes you want to repeat.Take A Hike Family Walks in the Rochester (NY) Area (Second Edition) (Trail Guidebooks) Overview

Best Hikes Near Chicago (Best Hikes Near Series) ReviewWe have lived on the north shore of Chicago for 30 years and driven by many of the hiking locations but never stopped to enjoy them. We have a lab named Murphy and wanted some information about new adventures we could have with him. This book lays out lovely hiking spots many of which are within a half hours drive of our home. We are able to check before we leave the house to see if the location allows dogs. That is a big help. The individual descriptions of the trails is also very helpful. As members of the nearly retired generation we are not looking for difficult hikes but of course this is Illinois so the topography is quite gentle. Never-the-less we were very pleased to find some elevations changes on our first hiking adventure. The trail was exactly as described in the book and so we were prepared...
I would recommend this book to dog owners...for sure.Best Hikes Near Chicago (Best Hikes Near Series) Overview

Afoot and Afield: San Diego County: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide ReviewJerry Schad is a remarkably prolific outdoor author. He has written extensively on hiking in southern California including the wildlands within Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. But San Diego is where Schad's heart truly lies and it shows in every edition of 'Afoot and Afield San Diego.' I have owned each one since the first in 1986 and this book just keeps getting better and better. The 4th edition (2007) features over 250 hikes and is sure to keep outdoor enthusiasts busy.
Most of the 30 or so hikes new to this edition are in the chapters dealing with Beaches and Bays and the Coastal Strip/Foothills sections. In the last 20 years San Diego County has made remarkable progress at putting aside open space for recreation and this version of Afoot and Afield chronicles many new preserves that have appeared over the last decade. New hikes include the Hosp Grove, a walk among Eucalyptus Trees just south of Oceanside, the addition of three new routes in Mission Trails Regional Park (along with the banishment of one path up Cowles Mountain), and multiple new trails in the Alpine/Jamal area.
While urbanized areas have seen many changes, the mountain and desert portions of the book are similar to previous editions. In Rancho Cuyamaca State Park, only one new hike was added, a pleasant jaunt along Cuyamaca Reservoir. Sadly, although the book has not changed much, the surrounding mountain landscape has. The 2003 Cedar fires destroyed much of the park and Schad's assessment that it will recover in a decade or two seems highly unlikely. As an aside, I was disappointed that Schad repeated the park claim and attributed the fire to "a century of fire suppression." That was, of course, part of the problem. But rampant mismanagement by the state park also shares the blame. Thinning, controlled burns, and spraying for bark beetles would have done much to mitigate the 2003 catastrophe. Happily, Palomar Mountain State Park has learned from the disaster that overtook Rancho Cuyamaca and is returning to active management of its resources, beginning with clearing away brush and downed wood. Because of this careful management, the many beautiful trails and cross country routes Schad describes on Palomar will be safeguarded for generations to come.
In conclusion, this is a very good guidebook. It retains most of the best features of earlier guides and all of the best hikes. I miss the little icons that appeared in previous editions, but the heading for each hike provides all the information you need in a concise, readable format. The trail sketch maps are also for the most part adequate, but you will want to supplement these with more detailed recreational maps where available. Still, this is the most comprehensive guide to San Diego County, a four season outdoor wonderland. If you want to explore the region, you would do well to get this book.Afoot and Afield: San Diego County: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide Overview

Top Trails: Sacramento: Must-Do Hikes for Everyone ReviewA lot of people think of Sacramento as a place that is "close" to everything -- the Bay Area, skiing, the Sierra -- but nothing to write home about. This book shows that Sacramento is a place in its own right for outdoor lovers. It has easy hikes for families and challenging ones for people who aren't shy about a little elevation gain. There are some Sierra gems -- after all, Sacramento is too close to the Sierra NOT to include some spots. But the book's great asset is in showing people what's close to home: where to go on the American River trail (on foot or bike), the Gold Country and in the flatlands.
The author is an engaging writer and his descriptions are lovely enough to make you feel like you've gotten a little exposure if you don't get beyond armchair exploration. There's also essential stuff, such as whether DOGS are allowed (yay!), and where to find waterfalls.

John Muir Trail: The essential guide to hiking America's most famous trail ReviewWilderness Press continues to update some of their classic guides regularly and this new version of their John Muir Trail Guide is well written with a new author, Elizabeth Wenk. At its heart, the guide is similar to previous editions in giving a mile for mile description of the trail. I found it very accurate for all portions of the JMT that I have hiked. It also includes new features: numerous GPS coordinates for landmarks, updated regulations, appendices listing campsites, mileages, and resupply points, and new topographical maps from Tom Harrison.
All these new features come at a small cost, however, in that the book is more than twice as large as the previous edition, by Kathy Morey and Thomas Winnett. And while you will need these new features in planning your hike, they are less important on the actual trail. Backpackers trying to save space and weight have a couple of options. One is to simply tear out the sections of the book you will be using. You hardly need the classic South to North directions if you are hiking the other way. Another is to use this edition for planning, but to get one of the older editions for the actual trip. These can be found here (1998) or here (1986). But this book is still worth purchasing. Having it will improve your odds of completing the trail and dramatically increase your enjoyment of it as well.John Muir Trail: The essential guide to hiking America's most famous trail Overview

60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Diego: Including North, South and East Counties ReviewThe author of this guide has put together a sensory smorgasbord for anyone who loves the outdoors. She details the flowers and plants you'll see (no more do you have to wonder what that fuzzy gray-green plant is, she tells you!), birds and other wildlife, challenges of the terrain, and where to find a spectacular view. Cross-referenced lists help you choose which hike to do (or helps you prioritize--I want to do all of them!) Best of all, she covers the damage from the 2003 wildfires around San Diego, so the book is way ahead of other guides right now. This guide took this New Englander from "Man, southern California is so dry" to amazement at the variety the San Diego area has to offer, from coastline to forest to mountains.60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: San Diego: Including North, South and East Counties Overview

60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Chicago: Including Aurora, Northwest Indiana, and Waukegan ReviewThe title of the book caught my eye, and the book itself more than lived up to it! I live in downtown Chicago and was looking for hikes that could be done as day trips - the 60 hikes included are within this distance. The book makes it easy to search by type - for example, river hikes, lake hikes, hikes for wildlife viewing, hikes with children, and then also by distance (1-3 miles, 3-6 miles, and 6+ miles). Each hike has a trail map, directions, a full description, and key info at a glance (e.g. length, configuration, difficulty, scenery, facilities, and even exposure - shady, sunny etc.).60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Chicago: Including Aurora, Northwest Indiana, and Waukegan Overview
