I'm an amateur hiker (if even that), and this guide is perfect. It's well organized (with hikes rated by difficulty -- easy for me, thanks), with just the right amount of information: maps, GPS coordinates, brief histories of the trail, photos, and one-page hike-spec boxes that include directions and trail contact info. This isn't a dry ol' hiking guide; the different hike descriptions are actually engaging and fun. Who knew that awesome hikes are just a subway ride away?! It was easy to find, the history about the trail in the book was interesting and we are looking forward to finding other hikes around our home we didn't know were there! Very user friendly book. Mountains for Mortals: New England: Scenic Summits for Hikers ReviewAs a 1-3 times a year hiking couch potato I was delighted to discover so many easy to moderate, max. 4 hour hikes within a reasonable drive from Greater Portland area. I appreciate the detailed directions to the trail head, with difficulty ratings and, and whether one could expect to find facilities nearby - although not essential, definitely always a plus.
