Walking Home: A Traveler in the Alaskan Wilderness, a Journey into the Human Heart ReviewI have read all three of Schooler's books. And, of the three, this one is my favorite. Schooler has already proven to be a descriptive and effective storyteller, yet in this book, he shows the reader more of himself, his motivations, and his human side. His story is one of how a man can cope with loss and transition. And, Schooler is a man's man who has depth, insight and humility.
I recommend "Walking Home" to any man who is in transition; who is moving into that real or metaphorical wilderness of the soul. Who becomes aware of the unknown parts of the world, and of himself. I recommend Schooler's book to any woman who wants to better understand a man's journey of moving "into" a heavy heart, walking "through" the heaviness, and, ultimately, getting "beyond" the old story and accepting "the next" one.

The Returning ReviewCam Attling left his hometown of Kayforl to fight in the war. Just a boy when he joined, Cam lost an arm but is the only person from Kayforl to survive the combat. He knows his fortune occurred because Lord Gyaar, son to the winning side's ruler, allowed him to live.
At home, he finds the townsfolk resent his surviving when other loved ones died. His family wants him to leave as they are embarrassed he came back alive while his engagement to Graceful Fenister ends ungracefully when she wants nothing to do with him. Cam leaves Kayforl for the second time in search of the Lord who spared him to learn why. On his quest for the truth he becomes friends with a boy and meets others like Diido who lost everything to the war.
This is an engaging novel that looks deeply at the impact of war on the returning vets and those in the home-front. The living must move on emotionally with what happened to their loved ones and yet must rebuild their devastated world in order to survive the ordeal. Although being an in depth character study including looking at villages like Kayforl limits the action and slows the pace deliberately as Christine Hinwood cleverly avoids dumbing down with her powerful tale that respects the middle school audience as intelligent caring readers.

Scorched ReviewLooks like this is the end of the Selina McCaffrey's story. I'm really sorry to see it end because it's been a real blast. Rachel Butler definitely knows how to tell a story and keep it going through three books. I was hoping this one would be a setup for book number four, but after getting to the end, realized it wasn't.
In Scorched, the author delved more into the psyche of the characters involved, especially that of Tony and Selena. This is something I truly appreciated since I wasn't really sure how each truly felt about the other. There were more than a few tender moments between our two lovers, and what they felt for one another was made clear.
In this book, Selena and Tony are on the run from people who want to see Selena dead. This time around, however, she receives help from an unexpected source. I'm still not sure why this person would risk life and limb to protect her though, and wish the author would have elaborated a little more on the reason. While fleeing for their lives, Selena becomes acquainted with the family members, many of whom she never knew existed. What she learns somewhat proves to be detrimental to her own safety. Eventually, Selena ends up trusting some people she should and should not have.
There wasn't quite as much action as there has been in the two previous books; however, this reader felt it was just right. As always, Butler kept me on the edge of my seat, and I will miss this continuing saga.Scorched Overview

The Next Mrs. Blackthorne (Bitter Creek, No. 6) Review"The Next Mrs. Blackthorne" by Joan Johnston" is 6th in the Bittercreek series. It follows:The Cowboy - The Texan - The Loner - The Price - and The Rivals. This series is modern day romance/western adventures that revolve around feuding families. The Blackthornes, The Creeds(descendants of the "Sisters of the Lone Star" Trilogy) and most recently The Grayhawks, who in this series were introduced in "The Rivals". The Blackthornes and Creeds had pretty much laid their feud to rest, but the Blackthornes and Grayhawks have another long standing hatred for each other, which escalated 20 years earlier by the affair of son Clay Blacthorne and daughter Libby Grayhawk, which produced grandaughter Kate, who being a Blackthorne-Grayhawk is caught in the middle.

So in the last book "The Rivals", teenaged Kate had been kidnapped and Libby and Clay had to work together to save their daughter. You knew that sparks still flew between them and hoped someday they would put aside their differences and marry and bring together these two feuding families. But alas, Clay is engaged to another and neither admit their true feelings. Now in "The Next Mrs. Blackthorne", Kate is once again in serious trouble as a result of trying to trick her parents into reuniting. She announces her engagement to an older mysterious fellow who's reputation is not exactly pristine, in hopes her parents will unite in order to stop the relationship. Clay now a federal Judge, is trying a high-profile case of a "bomber" and Kate has also befriended the son of the defendant. Now she has turned up missing and the hunt for Kate, her kidnapper and a bomb makes for an exciting and suspenseful adventure.
I enjoyed the mystery/adventure aspect of the story and found that quite intriguing, and also following the family saga, but the rest didn't seem up to par with the earlier romance stories. Libby who we want all the time to be The Next Mrs. Blackthorne, and make some of those sparks fly with Clay, doesn't even enter the picture until chapter 6 about 125 pages in. Clay's fiance, Jocelyn and Libby's brother North, are the focus at first, and although their story eventually becomes pretty hot(romantically speaking), it begins with an unrealistic ploy by Jocelyn as she offers her body to North, in exchange for some property the Blackthornes do not want to lose to him. Also, Kate, now a college student seems as mischievous and naive as a grade school girl, especially taking into consideration the life-threatening situation she had already had in the last story.
This is also the one book in this series, that I would say does not stand on it's own. You really need to read, at least "The Rivals" to get a full understanding of the characters. If you have already been following this series, you probably want to read it for the adventure and to catch up with the families. At the end of the book, Ms Johnston lets you know that the next story will continue to tell Kate's story(but doesn't give the title, so I am not sure if it is even out yet). I am hoping the "older/mysterious" guy(Jack) she pretended to love, will be back in the next story. He was the most interesting character in the story.
All in all, a good story to take you away for a while, just not quite up their with some of the others in the series. Enjoy the read....LaurieThe Next Mrs. Blackthorne (Bitter Creek, No. 6) Overview

Charming the Highlander (Highlander Trilogy) ReviewThe book starts off, on the sad side, as our heroine Grace Sutter, is at the bedside of her younger sister Mary, who was in an accident and just delivered a baby. In her last dying breaths, Mary tells Grace, the rocket scientist, the incredible story of why she had fled the baby's father; and makes Grace promise to bring the baby back to his father who is all alone in the world. Further she is to promise to sprinkle Mary's ashes on their childhood home on Tarstone mountain on the day of the summer solstice which is four months away. Taking a sabbatical to grieve and care for `Baby' Grace travels home during a winter ice storm. The charter plane crashes into a mountain but Grace, the baby, and another traveler, Greylon MacKeague survive the crash and through superhuman effort, Grey is able to bring both Baby and Grace, to safety.
It is of course, no consequence that Grace and Grey have met or have this incredible `lusty' attraction to one another - very sensually described! Also, in the background you have this delightful wizard who cast the spell (after a few mishaps) that brought this 12th century warrior, along with a few others that were not necessarily planned for, to the 21st century to find Grey's soul mate who would bear the child, that would one day be the wizard's heir. Grace, in the meantime, has secrets of her own and continues the deception that the baby is hers, while trying to determine if the Baby's father is sane enough to raise the child - being a scientist, Grace does not believe in time travel! Discovering that the baby's father is an arch- enemy of Grey's makes the complications of her attraction to Grey and growing love of `Baby' all that more heartbreaking. The relationship between Grey and Grace as the scientist, comes to terms with this purely alpha male is divine.
What I found unique in this book was that the 12th century warriors had four years to become acclimated to modern day life prior to the time period the story takes place in. As such, you didn't have the normal `awestruck' behavior that most time travel books would depict. This initial offering from a new author was very charming and sensual and I look forward to the sequels as Grey's band of `merry men' get on with their lives in the 21st century. Excellent read, fast moving, humorous and intelligent. Bravo on this first book from an author who I predict has a very bright future!Charming the Highlander (Highlander Trilogy) Overview

Red-Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park (Vintage Departures) ReviewAs I write this at the very end of 2004, a red-tailed hawk drama has hit the press: The nest of a minor celebrity, Pale Male, the hero of the non-fictional "Red Tails in Love," had his nest summarily and probably illegally removed from the tony 5th Avenue address where he has nested for many a year.
I happened to be in the middle of this divinely wonderful book when the news hit the airwaves, and I took it hard. Marie Winn, the ornithology (for lack of a more romantic word) columnist for The Wall Street Journal, wrote this lovely account of a band of birdwatchers who discover nesting raptors right across from Central Park in 1998. This was before 9/11 by a few years, and it has that wonderful innocence we all felt about life before the attacks.
The story concerns a red-tailed male hawk, dubbed "Pale Male" by the birdwatchers because of his unusually pale coloring, and his various mates and fledglings who live and breed in the most exclusive of addresses: New York's Upper East Side. We get to know the birds, their babies, their nesting triumphs and tragedies. We learn about the phenomenally prolific wildlife in Central Park, from birds to turtles to raccoons to dragonflies to butterflies to edible plants. We learn to know and love the dedicated band of independent souls who track these wonders of nature from season to season, year to year.
I hope that all will go well with Pale Male this year. And I hope that anybody who has any doubt about the beauty of the human spirit and the creatures who inhabit the earth with us will read this simply wonderful book!Red-Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park (Vintage Departures) Overview
