Man-Eaters ReviewDon't let the ... packaging fool you--this paperback is a reprint of a BBC book from a few years back that's chock full of information on many hundreds of cases of animals devouring people. This book imparts that more than a million people have been killed and eaten by tigers in the course of human history. There are also chapters on African lions (including a great capsule story of the Man-Eaters of Tsavo), leopards (which rival tigers in India as man-eaters), wolves (of which there are almost no known cases of them killing man in Europe or North America), and cougars, which are deadlier than I had realized. There are also chapters on more cold-blooded denizens, sharks and crocodilians. Very entertaining, though you'll reconsider letting your kids play outside for a while.Man-Eaters Overview

Walking Home: A Traveler in the Alaskan Wilderness, a Journey into the Human Heart ReviewI have read all three of Schooler's books. And, of the three, this one is my favorite. Schooler has already proven to be a descriptive and effective storyteller, yet in this book, he shows the reader more of himself, his motivations, and his human side. His story is one of how a man can cope with loss and transition. And, Schooler is a man's man who has depth, insight and humility.
I recommend "Walking Home" to any man who is in transition; who is moving into that real or metaphorical wilderness of the soul. Who becomes aware of the unknown parts of the world, and of himself. I recommend Schooler's book to any woman who wants to better understand a man's journey of moving "into" a heavy heart, walking "through" the heaviness, and, ultimately, getting "beyond" the old story and accepting "the next" one.

Connecticut Wildlife: Biodiversity, Natural History and Conservation ReviewThis is a great reference book for Connecticut wildlife, from deer to aphids, and trees to lichens.
Many of the entries are written in a conversational tone, with the author sharing his experiences with that species in Connecticut. He will say something like, "I have often seen this species breeding in shallow pools of Milford in April" or "This species is limited to the traprock ridges of central Connecticut". That is what makes this book different from so many other reference books out there.
The book is not necessarily an identification key, although it would certainly be helpful when trying to identify a species. It is more a description of the species found in the state and how they live. That is certainly handy when all you've got is a guide for, say, trees of North America and many of the trees shown do not even live in Connecticut. Here you would find out that Chinquapin oak or yellow oak are rare on limestone ridges and ledges in western Connecticut, that scarlet oak is shade intolerant, and black oak is typical of dry, sandy soils.
There is also general information about wildlife and the many types of ecosystems found in Connecticut. You can use this book to learn about vernal pools, salt-marshes, or the Connecticut River. There is a discussion about how insects tolerate being frozen and another on how galls are made.
There are a lot of pictures in the book, but there is not a picture of each species listed, which I think is a drawback.
Entries are organized by biological classification, for example, 'segmented worms', with a brief introduction of that group.Connecticut Wildlife: Biodiversity, Natural History and Conservation Overview

A Bird-Finding Guide to Costa Rica ReviewI have been hoping for a long time to get to Costa Rica for some outstanding birding. I purchased this book after reading other positive reviews and I'm very glad I did. This book gave us the information and the confidence to schedule a three week trip in 2010 that includes the Caribbean Slope, the mountains, the Pacific slope, and the Pacific Coast. Detailed, current, and right to the point. Great maps, driving directions, bird lists, and pointers. Our kudos and thanks to the author.
Update: We just came back from our 20 day trip to five different Costa Rica locations! We had a wonderful time. We saw 188 species of birds, explored mountains, remote beaches (including Corcovado), and various rain forest habitats. I can definitively say that the reason everything went so smoothly was in part because of the detail, thoroughness and accuracy of this book. Even if you are going on a guided trip arranged for you by someone else, I would read and bring this book!A Bird-Finding Guide to Costa Rica Overview

Red-Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park (Vintage Departures) ReviewAs I write this at the very end of 2004, a red-tailed hawk drama has hit the press: The nest of a minor celebrity, Pale Male, the hero of the non-fictional "Red Tails in Love," had his nest summarily and probably illegally removed from the tony 5th Avenue address where he has nested for many a year.
I happened to be in the middle of this divinely wonderful book when the news hit the airwaves, and I took it hard. Marie Winn, the ornithology (for lack of a more romantic word) columnist for The Wall Street Journal, wrote this lovely account of a band of birdwatchers who discover nesting raptors right across from Central Park in 1998. This was before 9/11 by a few years, and it has that wonderful innocence we all felt about life before the attacks.
The story concerns a red-tailed male hawk, dubbed "Pale Male" by the birdwatchers because of his unusually pale coloring, and his various mates and fledglings who live and breed in the most exclusive of addresses: New York's Upper East Side. We get to know the birds, their babies, their nesting triumphs and tragedies. We learn about the phenomenally prolific wildlife in Central Park, from birds to turtles to raccoons to dragonflies to butterflies to edible plants. We learn to know and love the dedicated band of independent souls who track these wonders of nature from season to season, year to year.
I hope that all will go well with Pale Male this year. And I hope that anybody who has any doubt about the beauty of the human spirit and the creatures who inhabit the earth with us will read this simply wonderful book!Red-Tails in Love: A Wildlife Drama in Central Park (Vintage Departures) Overview

America's National Wildlife Refuges: A Complete Guide ReviewOverall an excellent guide to our National Wildlife Refuges. Introductory chapters review the NWR history and key conservation issues. Then each of the refuges (over 500 of them) are described, state by state. The descriptions are generally quite thorough and interesting.
The biggest flaw with the book is a total lack of maps to show you where the refuges are located. If the section for each state just had a small map, the reader would instantly be able to visualize the refuge location. Also, the book is divided into "Featured refuges" and "Other refuges", with each section arranged by state. This sometimes makes finding a refuge confusing. It would be simpler if all the refuges for each state were grouped together, rather than in two different locations.
All in all a very good guide; I just wish there were some maps.

Wild America: The Record of a 30,000 Mile Journey Around the Continent by a Distinguished Naturalist and His British Colleague ReviewLet me just quote my favorite line from the book. It is when James Fisher, an Englishman, first sees the Grand Canyon:
"I went down there a few yards. The world ended; began again eight miles away. Between the ends of the world was a chasm."
Now I have never seen the Grand Canyon, but reading about it with such wonder through Mr. Fisher's eyes was extraordinary. It brought tears to my eyes. It goes to show how truly amazing and beautiful America is. I highly recommend this book, not just for the birds these two men see, but also for all the wonderful sights they come encounter. It made me want to retrace their route.Wild America: The Record of a 30,000 Mile Journey Around the Continent by a Distinguished Naturalist and His British Colleague Overview

Chimney Pond Tales: Yarns Told by Leroy Dudley ReviewThis collection of Penobscot tales is a real winner. I don't say this lightly. I am an Abenaki and there are few books out there by non-Indian writers/storytellers that are worth reading. This is definitely worth reading. It is the kind of book you think you will read and pass on to someone. Then you find that you don't WANT to pass on your only copy, so you buy more copies to pass on to others.
Rarely there comes along a book that is fitting for youngsters and adults. Chimney Pond Tales is one of those rare birds of a book that crosses the border of age. The "character" Pomola is a traditional trickster figure. He is trouble with a capital T. But you cannot help but side with him, even when he is being his most contentious self. Stories that feature tricksters do us humans a huge service: they show us our own frailties, allow us to be ok just as we are. We need this in a world where everything tires to be at odds with everything else. We need to be shown that sometimes we are just problems ourselves. This book of tales does that service in the world. Each tale is both entertaining and instructive.
Get yourself a copy. Buy a couple extras to give away. Read the tales when the weather is icky and you need to cheer yourself. Take it in the car to read when you are given a few precious moments you hadn't planned on. It is a treasure.
Chimney Pond Tales is in its 20th year. Why are you waiting to get your own copy?Chimney Pond Tales: Yarns Told by Leroy Dudley Overview
