Walking Home: A Traveler in the Alaskan Wilderness, a Journey into the Human Heart ReviewI have read all three of Schooler's books. And, of the three, this one is my favorite. Schooler has already proven to be a descriptive and effective storyteller, yet in this book, he shows the reader more of himself, his motivations, and his human side. His story is one of how a man can cope with loss and transition. And, Schooler is a man's man who has depth, insight and humility.
I recommend "Walking Home" to any man who is in transition; who is moving into that real or metaphorical wilderness of the soul. Who becomes aware of the unknown parts of the world, and of himself. I recommend Schooler's book to any woman who wants to better understand a man's journey of moving "into" a heavy heart, walking "through" the heaviness, and, ultimately, getting "beyond" the old story and accepting "the next" one.

Wilderness Comes Home: Rewilding the Northeast (Middlebury Bicentennial Series in Environmental Studies) ReviewFinally, I find a book that is relevant to the east and will hopefully inspire the west to support the rewilding of the east as we did with the wolves in Yellowstone.
This book is well written, understandable and is well connected between chapters.Wilderness Comes Home: Rewilding the Northeast (Middlebury Bicentennial Series in Environmental Studies) Overview

Maine's Golden Road: A Memoir ReviewBeing one who visits the Golden Road almost yearly, I purchased the book with enthusiasm. My experience was mostly positive.
Gould demonstrates vast knowledge about the area. He describes: the realities of the Maine woods experience, personalities of the inhabitants, varieties of visitors, wildlife, history and industry.
One area of disappointment was Gould's frequent choice of vocabulary and references. While reading, a dictionary had to be at my side. Also, frequently used french, latin and some historical references made reading more difficult and not fun.
Mr. Gould did at times poke fun at his intellectual perspective. However, his choice of words does not seem suited for most.
All in all, the book is a positive experience. One can take a trip to Maine's Golden Road, from their favorite arm chair.Maine's Golden Road: A Memoir Overview

North to the Night: A Spiritual Odyssey in the Arctic ReviewIn 1994-95 the author, his wife Diana, and their cat named Halifax, sailed to the Arctic in their 36-foot cutter, the Roger Henry, for an arctic experience. They spent a year in Baffin Bay, off the coast of Greenland, completely frozen in during the winter. His excellent writing is full of facts, from the mechanical details of getting making their boat seaworthy, to the history, geography, wildlife and interactions with the Intuit people.
Beyond that, though, there was something more. The challenges he faces are stark and realistic and he makes mistakes along the way nearly costing him his life, grappling with internal challenges as well as external ones. Along the way he learns great lessons in life.
As I read this book, I was right there with him, feeling his awe at the natural beauty, his thrill of the adventure as well as his loneliness and his fear. I was also constantly impressed by his ingenuity in solving the many constant technical unforeseen problems.
I couldn't put the book down, staying up almost all night to just keep reading and reading. I know I'll never take a trip like this. But I thank him for writing the book and giving me the privilege of experiencing just a little bit of this wild and frozen landscape.
Highly recommended.North to the Night: A Spiritual Odyssey in the Arctic Overview
