Frommer's New York City with Kids (Frommer's With Kids) ReviewI have two things to rave about - the book and the service from Amazon.com.
First, the book. I wanted to take my 12-year-old son to New York City but had no idea how to plan it, not being terribly familiar with the city. The book made it so easy!
Not only does it describe in great detail the plusses and minuses of activities, it tells what ages are likely to enjoy the activity, the hours, the cost and even how to get there.
After just 2 hours of going through the book and looking at the terrific maps that break Manhattan into three parts, I was able to plan our four days to perfection. Because of the maps with each destination circled and numbered for easy reference, I knew where all the places were within an area, and we didn't waste time traveling on the same day from one extreme of the island to the other.
The restaurant section was terrific, too, and very "right-on."
Now about Amazon. com. I ordered my book at 9 a.m. one Saturday morning. To my amazement, it arrived just a little more than 48 hours later in my maibox! I've been raving about that to everyone.

Frommer's New England (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewI have never bought a Frommer's Guide Book before, and now after I purchased this one, I am a loyal customer! I found it extremely insightful as to the most quaint New England towns to visit, which are the best routes to get there, practical information on the restaurants in town as well as their price ranges for any type of budgets - as well as advice on the many different bed and breakfasts that are available. This book caters to all travel styles, preferences and budgets. I planned most of my vacation with this book because it had phone numbers, prices, excellent directions... I could probably go on and on. Definitely a must for anyone who is traveling and not familiar with the area. It's like talking to someone who has lived in New England their whole life and is on hand to give you all the practical information you need to have a successful and fun/relaxing vacation. As if the book weren't great enough - they give you a wonderful full-sized pullout map that has all the towns marked on it which are mentioned in the book.Frommer's New England (Frommer's Complete Guides) Overview

Frommer's Family Vacations in the National Parks (Park Guides) ReviewThis book gets an A+ with one caveat.
First, for the parks included in the book, the reviews are comprehensive and detailed. After trying to plan my southwest vacation using just the web (and getting that "glazed over" look in my eyes), I found this book helped me immensely. It's become my "travel bible". He really does focus on the family part of "family vacations".
He presents a good arguement for the benefits of taking children on "natural" vacations, no matter what the age.
The one caveat...he only reviews 16 national parks! (There are over 300 in the National Park System). Granted, reviewing smaller parks that don't qualify for "family vacation" status wouldn't make sense, nevertheless I was disappointed to see that none of the South Dakota parks such as Mount Rushmore and the Badlands nor Glacier in Montana, Shenandoah National Park in VA, or any of the Alaska Parks were included. Obviously, this book is so good that it has left me wanting for more.

So it's easy to find a spot to match whatever you're in the mood for. Plus, there's a section on fun festivals and special events even lifelong New Yorkers might not know about.
Even if you own a car, this book might make you think twice about using it (especially with currently high gas prices). The author demystifies mass transit and gives all the information you need to feel confident about being "without wheels."

Frommer's Chicago 2005 (Frommer's Chicago) ReviewI tried a few recommendations from Frommers and a few from local Chicago residents. I found the book's suggestions were more accurate that the residents'!
Frommer's isn't shy about giving opinions about places (e.g. "all the restaurants in Greektown are about the same") whereas Lonely Planet & other books tend to sound objective for their restaurant reviews & end up giving the traveler no guidance at all. Beware to call all the places you want to visit though. Even though my Frommers Chicago book is current (2004), I came across 1 restaurant in the book that already closed down, and found hours to the Art Institute had already changed.Frommer's Chicago 2005 (Frommer's Chicago) Overview

Frommer's Chicago 2007 (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewFrommer's Chicago 2007 was useful in our recent trip. The tear-out map is excellent. We already had hotel reservations so didn't need the book for finding a place to stay, but the book was very valuable in finding eating establishments, and knowing in advance what price to expect. We recommend the Russian Tea Time, Heaven on Seven, and Giordano's. For a big night out, try Arun's - probably the best Thai food you'll ever have, and expect to pay $100 -$150 per person. Grab a hot dog at Portillo's, or let the vintage clothing-clad waiters put you down (for good clean fun) at Ed Debevic's. Come to think of it, although the book is good, our vacation was perfect - just try our eating choices, visit the Field Museum and the Art Institute, take the el out to Oak Park to tour the Frank Lloyd Wright home and other houses he designed, and spend some time playing on the Navy Pier.
