The A.T. Guide ReviewI'm a section hiker of the AT. I recently met a thru hiker on the trail who was using this guide. It has a nice way of graphically showing the elevations. It also shows the mileages for the next 3 shelters from each shelter showing both northbound and southbound. It shows all the parking places along the trail. That is particularly good info for us section hikers. I've had trouble finding that info in other AT guides. It has schematics of most of the towns close to the trail highlighting the eating and lodging places. It even has info on some of the people who offer shuttle service along the trail. I'm very pleased with my purchase.The A.T. Guide Overview

Trail Ways, Path Wise Review"Trail Ways, Path Wise" is an entertaining and inspiring tale. John Illig shares every thought with the reader so that it feels as if you could be the one hiking solo on the Appalachian Trail. The detail John uses in his descriptions and the great dialogue between characters that he incorporates really make the journey come alive. You will suffer with him when he starts the hike with 75 pounds on his back and later, when he hikes an insane number of miles with a dysfunctional shoe. You will rejoice with him when he reaches his PO boxes and gets to take warm showers. You will laugh with him during his encounters with other hikers--all of whom have their own quirks and unique trail personalities. You will admire his determination and feel inspired to follow in his footsteps. You will not want to put the book down as John will never fail to amuse you as he recounts his interactions with others and describes his own thoughts and reflections. I recently read several chapters aloud to my dad as we were on our own journey--a road trip home from college. My dad laughed so hard the he had tears in his eyes and had to be careful not to run us off the road. Also, if you are interested in hiking part or all of the AT in your lifetime, reading this book is a great way to become familiar with the trail and learn what experiences to expect.Trail Ways, Path Wise Overview

The Appalachian Trail--Onward to Katahdin ReviewThe author showed a tendancy for too much self-pity in his first book (based on the first half of his AT hike), but in this one he lies down in the middle of the trail and wallows in it. Curran approaches things in a way that is rational, carefully thought out, even scientific. The essence of this book is his efforts to apply this method to figuring out his relationship with God. It's a bit like trying to paint a cloud.
For those interested in the actual hiking itself, Curran comes off as a bit too harsh in his judgments of people and businesses he encounters along the way. His comments hint that he often doesn't feel properly respected or treated. I wonder if it has something to do with his being a retired Army colonel, and if he realizes that the world doesn't know or even care about that.

Walking with Spring ReviewEarl Shaffer was a laconic, introverted naturalist, and through his journey developed a deeper appreciation for the wilderness and deeper distrust for the modern world. This chronicle of the first thru-hike of the AT is highly factual, and quite literal. Shaffer did an excellent job of describing the varied terrain and geographic route of the trail. He was intensely serious, and at times the book seems a bit dry and too much of a literal account of the journey. Overall, however, the book is certainly one of a kind and a necessary read for anyone interested in the AT.Walking with Spring Overview

The Best of the Appalachian Trail: Overnight Hikes ReviewJust bought this and Best of the AT Day Hikes and am really enjoying them. I know I will never hike the whole trail, but these two books give me the best that the Appalachian Trail has to offer without having to hike evey inch of it. The books are well-organized and you can glean a lot of information at a glance; later you can go back and get the specifics of the hikes. This is edition has been a major revision of the first edition with more than a third of the hikes being brand new and all of the hike information--length, difficulty, trail route, driving directions, etc.--updated.
