Inexpensive as it is, it gives a nice overview of the trails complete with fold out maps. Not for Tourists Guide to Chicago ReviewThis handy and highly portable guide does have a lot of maps -- maps for every single neighborhood in Chicago. And while a GPS might be more practical once you are actually out and about, these maps are invaluable for helping to chart your course. No other city guide covers the entire city of Chicago border to border (it also includes Evanston, Skokie, and Oak Park). Restaurants and shops and nightlife are all suggestions by people who actually live and work in the neighborhoods. And the book is very sturdy. I've used it faithfully over the years (and I've lived inChicago fro 20 years) and never had a book fall apart on me. I've also used Atlanta (found a great soul food restaurant off the beaten track that I'd have never known about otherwise), in New York, and in Los Angeles (where the maps are especially useful). Great for people new to a city, visitors, people who live in the suburbs but come in for work or special events, and for those city dwellers who enjoy urban exploration.Not for Tourists Guide to Chicago Overview

Hiking Acadia National Park (Regional Hiking Series) ReviewThis is an invaluable guidebook for hikers at Acadia National Park. Our family -- including children ages 12, 9 and 3 -- visited Acadia for four days this summer and used this book to select a variety of trails. The authors describe the grade, distance, degree of difficulty and sights of nearly 150 miles of trails. Following their advice, we went along the Wonderland Trail to an enormous tidal pool, and chose the most appropriate route for our group up 1,200-foot Penobscot Mountain; there are many trails to the top of the mountain, and the book helped us choose the right one for our skill and fitness level. The older two children and one parent also climbed the cliffs of the Beehive; it's rightly described as a strenuous trail, but if you're not afraid of heights, the view of the coast is spectacular and the taste of wild blueberries at the top makes it special. (This hike is listed as one of the authors' favorites.) We found the book extremely useful. The book would also be useful for more experienced hikers; the authors have been on all of the park's trails, in all kinds of conditions. And the book fits neatly in a backpack, for handy reference in case you need to check the maps while hiking. Highly recommended.Hiking Acadia National Park (Regional Hiking Series) Overview

Frommer's Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard 2011 (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewI bought this at the last minute when I realized the people I was going with hadn't been there in 10-20 yrs! I benefitted from the restaurant reviews & detailed descriptions of several towns, with accompanying one-page maps for most of them AND: a pull-out map (main reason I bought the book!) that had at least the major highways numbered for the whole Cape (although some were shown but were not numbered which was confusing!) and included lighthouses, ferry routes and beaches.
I've used Frommer's books for other trips and have been pleased as well.
I supplement all my travel guides with a look at TripAdvisor.com because (contrary to what Arthur Frommer says) I value opinions from travelers like me and if you use some common sense when evaluating the legitimacy of the reviews, the reward is there. By looking at TA, I compared the reviews to those in this book and they proved to be spot on. Also, I found several great restaurants (& not new ones, either) that were totally omitted from this book...or I would give the Frommer's 5*'s.

Waterlilies and Lotuses: Species, Cultivars, and New Hybrids ReviewI just bought this latest edition of Waterlilies and Lotuses after owning the last one for a few years and I was glad to see photos and information on many new varieties.
Some of the new listings, with photos, include Foxfire, King of Siam, Carla's Sonshine, Islamorada, Innocence, Miami Rose and many others.
A lot of great species lilies are also listed, with photos, such as the Victoria lilies, the Australian Gigantea lilies, Eurayle Ferox and others.
All descriptions of the lilies include information such as flower size, shape and fragrance and leaf sizes colors and spread. Also included on most lilies is the date of introduction, the person who hybridized them and the parent plants of the hybrids when known.
The authors also give recommendations as to what size pond or tub is best suited for a particular lily.
