Northwest Garden Style: Ideas, Designs, and Methods for the Creative Gardener ReviewThe writer starts out by saying "gardening, like politics, is the art of the possible". This book is written "to help non-professionals solve their landscaping problems by showing how other home gardeners have dealt with similar landscaping issues".
Written for the gardener in the Pacific Northwest, this book offers ideas, designs and methods for the creative gardener. In each of the eight chapters the writer introduces the topic, provides some background and context, then describes and illustrates two or three gardens where the owners have successfully faced similar issues. Some chapters, for example "Gardens in Small Spaces" and "Gardening on a Slope", address problem sites that some gardeners are faced with, others, such as "Waterwise Gardens" and "Gardens for Attracting Wildlife", help gardeners implement their choices in design. Each chapter has a plant list (and, mercifully, it's quite compact), a checklist to guide planning - sometimes with how-to-do-it diagrams - and some additional ideas to enrich this style of garden.
The writer is knowledgeable about the problems and possibilities facing the gardener in the Pacific Northwest and writes with clarity, always maintaining a balance between the lyrical and the practical.
L. Quartermain Younker's photographs illustrate the richness of northwest gardens and focus on some of the successful treatments of daunting sites and the applications of environmentally friendly principles.
This book will jump-start the novice gardener in the Pacific Northwest as well as offering mnore experienced gardeners new ideas and new viewpoints.Northwest Garden Style: Ideas, Designs, and Methods for the Creative Gardener Overview

Edible: A Celebration of Local Foods ReviewI have been an Edible SF subscriber for a couple of years and wait impatiently for my next issue after reading EVERY PAGE of the magazine. This book is a wonderful compilation of inspirational stories of the mavericks of the agricultural social movement we desperately need. It is also a useful tool for locating local foods and filled with beautiful images celebrating the local foods and folks that produce them for us to enjoy. I like that the focus is on the "celebration of local foods" and not your typical cookbook. There are recipes (and wonderful ones at that), but the focus remains on the food itself. My only regret is that I will devour it too quickly and have to wait in hope that there will be an Edible II published soon.Edible: A Celebration of Local Foods Overview

Gaia's Garden, Second Edition: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture ReviewWhat I really love about this book is how much Mr. Hemenway goes into the *reasons* that these methods work. Call me obsessive, but I like authors to provide a good reason their techniques work and not just say "OMG, look at this harvest, just do exactly what I do!" Mr. Hememway gives us beautiful, well-though out tables of different nutrients certain plants accumulate, what kinds of bugs they attract, plants that can tolerate drought or provide mulch on the spot, plants that have "spiky" roots that break up tough top-soil and plants that can provide structure or shade to other plants. It's about using the attributes of different vegetation to do the work for you in a way that doesn't adversely impact the land. Armed with this information, you can create your own "guilds" and areas of companion plants that work best for your location. Outside of a textbook, this is the most complete information on gardening I have ever come across. The author even presents the downsides of the methods in, what I feel, is a very even-handed manner. No one style fits every need and Mr. Hemenway addresses that. This is my favorite gardening book, period.Gaia's Garden, Second Edition: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture Overview
