Firefly Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians ReviewThe Firefly Encyclopedia series are uniformly excellent. There are several current volumes (Reptiles & Amphibians, Insects & Spiders, and Birds). With luck additional volumes will be added (I'd be especially keen to see one on fishes). The series picks up the tradition started with the David Macdonald's "Encyclopedia of Mammals" by having numerous experts contribute information about the organisms they study. Thus, each species or group of organisms is described by the scientists who know them best. The result is a truly amazing compilation of information about each type of organism.
The Reptiles and Amphibians volume contains information from 38 separate contributors about all types of reptiles and amphibians. Contents include:
Amphibians, general information: 28 pages
Caecilians: 4 pages
Salamanders and Newts: 22 pages
Frogs and Toads: 34 pages
Reptiles, general information: 20 pages
Turtles and Tortoises: 10 pages
Lizards: 38 pages
Worm-lizards: 2 pages
Snakes: 32 pages
Tuatara: 2 pages
Crocodilians: 12 pages
The book is lavishly illustrated. There are tons of amazing photographs and lots of beautifully rendered drawings. The text is well written and generally easy to follow. Some sections are fairly technical (I have a Ph.D. in Biology and got lost a few times), but probably 90% or more should be accessible to anyone. I strongly recommend this book for biologists, naturalists, and people interested in wildlife. It would make an excellent gift for a young person (probably junior high +) who likes animals.

Amphibians and Reptiles of Baja California, Including Its Pacific Islands and the Islands in the Sea of Cortés (Organisms and Environments) ReviewFirst, let me say that I have known Lee Grismer for many years and I know the passion he has for the Baja Peninsula and its natural wonders. I have been waiting a long, long time for this book. When I received it, I scanned the book and planned to read it cover to cover when I had the time. In the last weeks, I made the time and have nearly finished this tome.
Dr. Grismer has put his heart and soul into making this book the best herpetological reference on Baja California, bar none. Baja is a mysterious place with many influences flowing into it from the Pacific, the Colorado Desert and mainland México. In this book, Dr. Grismer takes great pains to delineate the geological influences which have helped to shape this strange land and the effects on the herpetology of this 1,000 km long peninsula.
I marvel at the time he has put in studying the many organisms extant on the peninsula and his obviously meticulous note taking. I am in awe of the relationships he has built up with local ranchers and fishermen over the last quarter century. Local people are a great source of information and Lee has used their knowledge and consciousness to build a reference source the likes of which has never before been devoted to a similar chunk of land.
I would love to write more but I feel that the book will speak for itself. It is a great read and not nearly as tedious as other scientific works I have read. Just for its reference value, this book deserves to be on the shelf of any serious student of herpetology.
Now, all we need is Field Guide!Amphibians and Reptiles of Baja California, Including Its Pacific Islands and the Islands in the Sea of Cortés (Organisms and Environments) Overview

Snakebit: Confessions of a Herpetologist ReviewTruly unusual among "pop science" books, this effort manages to combine rigorous science with lots of fun anecdotes and even some philosophical insights. Mr. Anthony has captured the whimsy and edge-traveling joy that seem to personify many herpers.Snakebit: Confessions of a Herpetologist Overview

Boss Snakes: Stories and Sightings of Giant Snakes in North America ReviewHot on the heels of his pioneering volume, The Historical Bigfoot, Chad Arment has produced the first and only compilation of giant snake tales from North America, spanning centuries from colonial times through the 1960s. As in his other works, Arment makes no attempt to "sell" a theory of new unknown species at large. He retains a healthy attitude of scientific skepticism and exposes hoaxes that other researchers have swallowed, hook, line, and sinker. A must-buy volume for anyone interested in cryptozoology, reptiles, or natural mysteries in general.Boss Snakes: Stories and Sightings of Giant Snakes in North America Overview
