The A.T. Guide ReviewI'm a section hiker of the AT. I recently met a thru hiker on the trail who was using this guide. It has a nice way of graphically showing the elevations. It also shows the mileages for the next 3 shelters from each shelter showing both northbound and southbound. It shows all the parking places along the trail. That is particularly good info for us section hikers. I've had trouble finding that info in other AT guides. It has schematics of most of the towns close to the trail highlighting the eating and lodging places. It even has info on some of the people who offer shuttle service along the trail. I'm very pleased with my purchase. The A.T. Guide Overview

The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories ReviewWhen I read the short stories in this book, it reminded me of a time as a kid when I loved to hear tales spun and delivered by story tellers that could bring the characters and drama to life. Indeed, story-telling was a true art form and the memory of this is captured in "The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories".
There are some classics here: "That Spot" by Jack London relates the uneasiness of two young prospectors working hard to find their fortune while trying to shake one of their sled dogs who turns out to be more of a curse than a blessing.
"The End of the Trail" by Clarence Mulford has Hopalong Cassidy chasing down a rustler who tried to kill one of his partners. Mulford brings out the language and diction of a long in America that has long since passed but still resonates with us.
There are other great stories included here by Zane Grey and Adirondack Murray that work great both in reading them and in telling them. The Boy Scouts Book of Campfire Stories Overview

Hiker's Guide to the High Sierra Yosemite: The Valley and Surrounding Uplands (High Sierra Hiking Guide) ReviewThe 7th edition of this book, like its predecessors, is essentially a guide to the Valley and southern half of Yosemite National Park. Originally conceived as a hiking resource for the old 15' topo maps of the Sierras, this book offers 25 fabulous dayhikes which range from 1 to 16.5 miles. The nice thing about this selection is that you can even experience brief moments of solitude on many of these walks, even on the Yosemite Valley Floor; not an easy trick. With its companion volume to Tuolumne Meadows one has a pretty good guide to the park. Schaffer also throws in 5 nice backpack trips for those who would like to further explore the backcountry.
There are, however, many hiking guides to Yosemite. What makes this one stand out is that Schaffer has done more original field research into the geology and topography of the park than virtually all other guidebook authors combined. His conclusions are that the Sierras are far older than previously thought, and that glaciers had only minimal impact in shaping the Valley as we see it today. Rather, the Valley's stunning cliffs are the result of millions of years of weathering and breakage along fault and joint lines. Much of his research is condensed into this volume and following his trail routes is also incidentally a natural history lesson on the origins of this stunning place. For this alone it is worth the read and well worth a five star rating.
But this book is also quite valuable for its maps. Schaffer has lent his expertise to the maps in several Wilderness Press titles, including the 3 volume set on the Pacific Crest Trail and the guide to the Tahoe Rim Trail. The map included in this volume is far more accurate than the old 15' topo maps, or even the new 7.5' maps insofar as the trails are concerned. Between the fascinating text and the separate folded map, this book is a bargain and deserves wide readership.Hiker's Guide to the High Sierra Yosemite: The Valley and Surrounding Uplands (High Sierra Hiking Guide) Overview

Best Loop Hikes: Washington (Best Hikes) Review"Nothing pleases hikers more than finding a great wilderness trail that allows them to wander in circles, never touching the same bit of trail twice. Hiking, after all, is hard work and it's nice when every step takes you into new country, with new scenery. Out-and-back hikes are okay, but a great loop hike? That's the holy grail of the trail world." -- from the introduction
That pretty much sums up this excellent guide to loop hikes in Washington State.
The novice hiker, or someone like me who hasn't been on the trails in a while, will benefit from the up-to-date information in the introduction. Topics include: permits and regulations, general trail etiquette, low-impact camping, water, clean-up, bears, cougars, weather, and gear.
A partial Washington State map near the front of the book helps the reader to locate the numbered hikes, ranging from as far west as Cape Alava on the Olympic Peninsula to Horseshoe Basin/Windy Peak in the Okanogan National Forest in the north central part of the state. The majority of these hikes are in the Cascade Mountains, from North Cascades National Park to Mount Adams in the south.
A two-page guide will help the reader select "hikes by interest," including panoramic views, solitude, old-growth forest, dog-friendly trails, kid-friendly trails, wildflower viewing, waterfalls and rivers, lakes, wildlife viewing and natural splendor. One drawback to this fine volume is that there is no simple way to find an easy dayhike without turning to the page for each individual hike.
These loops vary in length from short dayhikes to overnight backpack trips that can take several days.
Each hike selection begins with a short summary. The text provides clear directions on how to get to the trailhead, a description of each hike and things you might see along the way. A small topographical trail map is provided for each hike, and the book is scattered with black and white photos of sights one might encounter on the trail.
An appendix contains helpful contact information and web addresses to parks, ranger districts and volunteer groups mentioned in the book.
This is an excellent addition to the Mountaineers catalog of guidebooks. If you're looking for a loop hike in the Pacific Northwest--whether short or long--take a look at this volume.Best Loop Hikes: Washington (Best Hikes) Overview

Hidden Hikes in Western Washington ReviewThere are stacks of hiking books available for Western Washington, and some are even touted as "hidden" hikes (they aren't) but Karen Sykes has written the real thing. These are hikes that for whatever reason don't attract the hordes that commonly hike the most common trails. Many of them are "secondary" hikes that either don't have the splashy payoff commonly associated with the most popular hikes; but many more hikes are special by virtue of their history or their charm. These are hikes for those who miss the adventure of trying the unknown. And because Sykes is safely conservative in her recommendations, the reader can feel assured that the conditions will be no worse than expected.
For armchair hikers, the book makes good reading.Hidden Hikes in Western Washington Overview

Frommer's Iceland (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewHello
Since I like to have my time well spent on trips,I usually do considerate research before going backpacking and I was really excited before going on this one. The problem is- there are very few guidebooks that are dedicated to backpackers and trekking. I've seen the "other" famous guidebooks on Iceland, but they all seem to be all about hotels and restaurants!
This guidebook, although definitely not dedicated only to backpackers, has the perfect combination and was great for planning. I found plenty of information on trekking opportunities including doing it on your own, operators, shuttle services, access ways and lots of "pearls" missed by other rushing tourists. I found their recommendations to be very close to the average backpacker's taste.
Of course, like all guidebooks, it had hotel/hostel info for different levels of budget and also popular attractions.
I found the list of attractions and best towns to stay to be very good.
I saw in another review that someone was upset about the fact that the book has no pictures and he asked how he was supposed to decide where to go with no pictures?. Come on! just Google the name of whatever sounds nice or interesting and you'll see better photos than any guidebook has. Another advantage, part of it due to the fact there are no photos- the book is really light-weight (around 300g or less I think)- all other guidebooks are around 0.5kg or more!, again, just what a backpacker needs!
Spending the last few days in Reykjavik, I found the info on dinning, shopping and museums very helpful and precise.
To sum it all- I would like to mention that I was traveling and trekking around Iceland for a full month, only by hitch-hiking (yes, Iceland is probably the best place in the world for a solo hitch-hiker), and I found everything I needed in that book.
What I would add: More maps, especially of parks and trails. And well, It wouldn't hurt to add a FEW pages with photos, I guess most people would like that.

Thank you Frommer's!Frommer's Iceland (Frommer's Complete Guides) Overview

75 Hikes in California's Lassen Park & Mount Shasta Regions (100 Hikes In...) ReviewThe old saying "You can't judge a book by its cover" simply does not apply to this new edition of '75 Hikes' by John R. Soares. Indeed, the cover photo of Mt. Lassen reflected in the pristine waters of Lake Helen is almost worth the price of the book itself. If that photo doesn't sell you on the joys of the southern Cascade range, nothing will. As soon as I saw the cover, I was already dreaming about another visit.
Just as Mt. Lassen dominates the cover of this book, trails in and around Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park dominate the text. Although the book has 5 chapters, each corresponding to a specific area, the first two make up almost 2/3 of the hikes described here. This is as it should be. Mt. Lassen is probably the most accessible of the major peaks in the Cascades. The rest of the park is also heavily geared towards hikers: numerous lakes, peaks, meadows, cinder cones, waterfalls, and thermal features invite hikers to linger in this remarkable place and Soares does an excellent job of describing short and long hiking opportunities for these destinations. Most of the routes he suggests make for pleasant day hikes but he also includes numerous backpacking options.
The material for Mt. Shasta and Lava Beds National Monument is understandably more limited. The main thing I got out of this section is that if I want to climb Mt. Shasta I should sign up with a guided expedition. I have lots of hiking and backpacking experience at high elevations, but none with ice axes and crampons on glaciers. Judging by Soares's descriptions, this is an absolute necessity for a successful climb on Shasta. Soares does list several options for hikers not intent on bagging the summit.
On the whole, this is an excellent guidebook. If you are interested in hiking northeastern California, '75 Hikes' is a good starting point. All the classics are included: Burney Falls, Captain Jack's Stronghold, Bumpass Hell Themal Works in Lassen Park, and many others. Nice black and white photos accompany the text which is well written and moderately humorous in places. In all, this book is a worthy investment for any vacation in the region.75 Hikes in California's Lassen Park & Mount Shasta Regions (100 Hikes In...) Overview

Desolation Wilderness and the South Lake Tahoe Basin ReviewThis is a nice book with a serious flaw. To understand this flaw, think about why one might buy a hiking book. Reason 1: to find out what trails exist in a given region, and how to find those trails (ie, the directions to the trailhead for each trail). Reason 2: to get detailed information about specific trails.
For me, the most important information about a specific trail is the distance in miles to one or more points on the trail and the elevations at various points along the trail. If we are deciding which trail to walk, we need to know how difficult the trail is. Difficulty is a function of BOTH distance and elevation change.
Remarkably, this book provides no information about elevations at any point on any trail described, not even the elevation at the trailhead or at the furthest destination reached on the trail. This is unusual among hiking books, and it is a SERIOUS OMISSION.
The book includes small reproductions of portions of topographic maps at the back, but the elevation numbers on the maps are rare (mainly summits) and it would take a long time to decipher the contours for each trail. I pay money for a book assuming someone has already done that for me, and summarized the information in the description of each trail.
Why not follow the example of the Yosemite National Park Service and other hiking books, and include a "trail profile" image for each hike? This image shows distance on the horizontal axis and elevation on the vertical axis, with text labels to indicate specific landmarks or trail junctions along the way. If there are side trails or alternate routes, choose one route for the main profile and add separate profiles below that for the segments of the trail that differ. Or at least state the elevations for the final destination of each side trail.
Aside from this serious flaw, it seems like a good book. The trail descriptions appear to be clear, and the organization and layout are good. The photographs of lakes set in granite bowls are superb.Desolation Wilderness and the South Lake Tahoe Basin Overview

The Sierra High Route: Traversing Timberline Country ReviewThis book outlines a magnificent experience following an off-trail, higher version of the Muir Trail through the High Sierra. We have followed most of Roper's route over several years: sometimes we thought we were lost or overwhelmed, but it always turned out fine, and usually excellent. He treads a fine line between complete instructions that would allow no mistakes, and an experience that gives the hiker their own opportunity for route-finding, discovery, and growth. This is one of our favorite books, and we keep an intact copy plus another one torn apart for each journey and sometimes given away to people met along the way who need it. We still travel the trail some of the time, but genuinely value this alternative farther away from the crowds. The Sierra High Route: Traversing Timberline Country Overview

John Muir Trail: The essential guide to hiking America's most famous trail ReviewWilderness Press continues to update some of their classic guides regularly and this new version of their John Muir Trail Guide is well written with a new author, Elizabeth Wenk. At its heart, the guide is similar to previous editions in giving a mile for mile description of the trail. I found it very accurate for all portions of the JMT that I have hiked. It also includes new features: numerous GPS coordinates for landmarks, updated regulations, appendices listing campsites, mileages, and resupply points, and new topographical maps from Tom Harrison.
All these new features come at a small cost, however, in that the book is more than twice as large as the previous edition, by Kathy Morey and Thomas Winnett. And while you will need these new features in planning your hike, they are less important on the actual trail. Backpackers trying to save space and weight have a couple of options. One is to simply tear out the sections of the book you will be using. You hardly need the classic South to North directions if you are hiking the other way. Another is to use this edition for planning, but to get one of the older editions for the actual trip. These can be found here (1998) or here (1986). But this book is still worth purchasing. Having it will improve your odds of completing the trail and dramatically increase your enjoyment of it as well.John Muir Trail: The essential guide to hiking America's most famous trail Overview

100 Classic Hikes in New England: Maine / New Hampshire / Vermont / Massachusetts / Rhode Island / Connecticut ReviewJeff Romano's 100 Classic Hikes in New England is an easy way to pack my gear, pick a hiking spot, and get on the trail. He has done a thorough job listing multiple options for length, duration, difficulty, and fitness levels throughout New England.
Particularly, I like the following about the book:
- DURABLE stitch binding, printed on laminate heavy paper. It has been stuffed in my backpack and used for navigation on several hikes with very little sign of wear.
- CONSISTENT RATING of hikes: I was able to correctly guess my time and ability to complete hikes from ratings. While I do go faster than an average hiker, I could properly estimate how the rating of a hike applies to fitness level.
- VARIETY of hikes difficulty ranging from some I was able to do with young children to overnight backpacking trips.
- TOPO MAPS included to give an indication of the elevation profile and terrain.
- DIVERSE geography across the six states, high mountains, near the ocean, and on islands.
- DETAILED descriptions and pictures to help prepare for the hike and navigate the trail.
I only wish the book had included a CD with GPS files for each hike. I did buy the National Geographics's TOPO software used in the book, but it had very few of the trails marked in it. For the most part I had to copy the trails by hand from the book.
While some will argue that one or another of their favorite hikes belong in the list of 100 classics, I say we are fortunate to live in an area so rich in beautiful hikes. Take this book with you and enjoy it.
PS. The video is from Rugged Mountain (hike #17) in CT.

100 Classic Hikes in Northern California ReviewI just got this book. It is the most beautiful hiking guide I've ever seen. It's an updated edition of 100 Hikes in Northern California, and it has thorough descriptions of all my favorite hikes, and many others my wife and I are planning to do this winter (in the Bay Area) and next summer (in the Sierra Nevada and maybe in the Trinity Alps). We have two other hiking books on Northern California, but this one is definitely our favorite. If you are only getting one hiking guide for the north state, this is it.100 Classic Hikes in Northern California Overview

The Best of the Appalachian Trail: Overnight Hikes ReviewJust bought this and Best of the AT Day Hikes and am really enjoying them. I know I will never hike the whole trail, but these two books give me the best that the Appalachian Trail has to offer without having to hike evey inch of it. The books are well-organized and you can glean a lot of information at a glance; later you can go back and get the specifics of the hikes. This is edition has been a major revision of the first edition with more than a third of the hikes being brand new and all of the hike information--length, difficulty, trail route, driving directions, etc.--updated. I (and you will too) will be making great use of them. The Best of the Appalachian Trail: Overnight Hikes Overview
