A Manual of Acarology: Third Edition ReviewA fine edition of old Krantz's book on mites, very updated. It is my opinion that it will be very useful to grad students and first level acarologists all over the world.A Manual of Acarology: Third Edition Overview

Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates, Second Edition ReviewThe other reviewers' descriptions are correct: this is a valuable reference. I would like to like to clarify this a little however. The text is an important tool for taxonomists and ecologists working with aquatic macroinvertebrates. However, its emphasis is clearly on non-insects. If you need to identify insects-the most abundant aquatic macroinvertebrates, you should use Merritt and Cummins (1996) text: An introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America. If you will be identifying samples for stream bioassessments you will need both of these books-and probably some others-as bench references.
To use these references to identify organisms, you will need access to a laboratory because you will need glassware, forceps, microscopes and other tools and chemicals. Sometimes a dissecting scope is required. Sometimes you will need to mount parts of organisms on microscope slides to view them on a compound scope at high magnification. If you represent a volunteer group and don't have access to (or experience with) this type of equipment, this book may not be for you. You might be better off with Resse Voshell's book: A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America. His text generally has family-level taxonomy based on characteristics observable in the field. Both books contain interesting ecological information in addition to taxonomic identification.
So yes, this book clearly deserves two "Thumbs Up" but you should consider your experience level, taxonomic need, and how you will use this book before you purchase it. I hope this helps you decide if the book is right for you. Feel free to email me with questions if necessary (brett@thebugguy.org). Best regards.Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates, Second Edition Overview

Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates, Third Edition (Aquatic Ecology) ReviewAs an instructor for Freshwater Ecology I purchased the e-textbook version of this textbook so that I could use the taxonomic keys up on the smartboard and my class could all follow along as we practiced keying out some inverts. I started bookmarking the keys for each phylum and found out that the e-textbook stops at chapter 18, while the hard-copy text continues on to chapter 22. This edits out 200 pages of text, and a number of taxonomic keys for taxa such as : Ostracoda, Cladocera, Copepoda, and Decapoda. I was very disappointed and I assume there was some kind of error when this e-text was made since I can't see why it would intentionally be omitted by the publisher.Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates, Third Edition (Aquatic Ecology) Overview

A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America ReviewThis book is an excellent guide to family-level invertebrate identification. It has wonderful pictures and excellent background information on the organisms.
Section I has the fundamentals of freshwater invertebrate biology. It discusses basic ecology of invertebrates and provides generalized information about habitat, feeding, movement, breathing, and stress tolerance. This section also discusses common methods of studying freshwater
invertebrates and provides references for further study.
Section II has an identification mechanism for identifying the invertebrates. The authors call it Quick Guide. The guide uses line drawings with written distinguishing features. It functions in a similar manner to a dichotomous key, but is not as complex.
Section III has natural history and ecological information for each group in the book. This section presents distinguishing features, explanation of names, habitat, movement, feeding, breathing, life history, significance, and stress tolerance for each specific group.
I have only two minor criticisms of this book. One criticism is that the book shows only adult beetles, when many times the larval forms are collected. This book would not help in their identification. Second, since most of the identification is pictoral, some groups (especially snails) would be difficult for beginners to distinguish. Once again, these are minor criticism and I use this book a lot.
Overall, I enjoy this book on many levels and it contains a wealth of information. As an aquatic ecologist I "live and die" by McCafferty and Merritt and Cummins, but those are large, cumbersome tomes. If I need a quick check on a fact, or to see a picture, I can easily take this book into the field or wherever I need it. I strongly recommend this book to you.A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America Overview
