Field Guide to Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores: Cape Hatteras to the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the Caribbean (Peterson Field Guide Series) ReviewWhere Kaplan's "Coral Reefs" manages to take a difficult field guide topic and conquer it, "Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores" Takes an impossible task and muddles it. I don't know what the people at Peterson's Field Guides was thinking! The topic is far to broad to include in one book, and Kaplan seems to try and make it broader. He includes coral reefs and things distinctly NOT on the shore as well as including topics already in other field guides. I do NOT want to belittle Kaplan (whom I enjoy) or Peterson's (who I think makes the best mass consumption field guides available) but unless you really need it, I would stay away from this book. It does win points for it's illustrations and Kaplan's knowledge and writing style.Field Guide to Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores: Cape Hatteras to the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the Caribbean (Peterson Field Guide Series) Overview

A Practical Guide to the Marine Animals of Northeastern North America ReviewLeland W. Pollock's A Practical Guide to the Marine Animals of Northeastern North American is what I have been searching for ever since getting into inverts. For the region, I have been using Kenneth L. Gosner's Guide to Identification of Marine and Estuarine Invertebrates--Cape Hatteras to the Bay of Fundy, but my copy is very worn, not to mention it is out of print. I have bought two copies after it was out of print, with my last one purchased for much more than the original cover price. And although esthetically pleasing and good for a second, conformational source, books such as Peterson's guides lack the minutia that I need to truly identify an invert to species. Pollock uses a tabular key system which works well with his many illustrations. It's neat that he included animals with spines, because someday I might get into them. This is a good text for an individual who wants to identify more than just shells that have been washed up onto the beech. I recommend this book.A Practical Guide to the Marine Animals of Northeastern North America Overview
