Eatontown and Fort Monmouth (NJ) (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) ReviewHaving hailed from this part of New Jersey, I was very interested in learning of its history and development. The book was very informative, but I wish it had contained even more information, particularly about Fort Monmouth. All-in-all, I felt it was very well done.Eatontown and Fort Monmouth (NJ) (Images of America) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) Overview

Atlas & Gazetteer ReviewThe Southern and Central California Atlas and Gazetteer by DeLorme always travels with me on my frequent road and rock-hounding trips in SoCal. These maps are a cross between road maps and topo maps and may or may not be what you need. If you want a standard road atlas, you will probably find the contour lines and dirt road details distracting. For these folks I'd recommend Thomas Bro's California map book or a trip to AAA. For folks who know what 7 1/2 minute quadrangle they'll be exploring, I suggest you visit the USGS map sales room at the Menlo Park office [it's self-serve...I always spend at least 3 or 4 hours pouring over the topos] and find the specific quadrangle you need. I generally use this atlas on trips when I'm going to visit areas I've never been to before. I need more details than the standard road atlas offers, but I usually don't buy the USGS topos for an area unless I intend to go back and spend some time at that location. This is the atlas that guides me when I first visit a new rock-hounding site. My friends and I refer to the atlas as the 'orange map book' since the old editions had an orange cover. I'm on my third copy [but I keep my older trashed copies for all the annotations I've made in them]. As any experienced map user knows, no one set of maps will work for all purposes. I recommend you add this atlas to your map reference library.Atlas & Gazetteer Overview

Dogs That Point, Fish That Bite: Outdoor Essays (Chapel Hill Books) ReviewI came across this book while looking for something to read on a rainy day. The title was amusing and I was somewhat aquainted with Jim Dean's work as editor of "Wildlife in North Carolina" magazine. This is a truly remarkable collection of stories that celebrate the outdoor life. These stories are not just about hunting and fishing, although hunters and fishermen would certainly enjoy them. Mr. Dean has captured a unique way of approaching life. His stories are quite entertaining and will remind you of a time that many think has passed away. A time when life wasn't so complicated and things didn't seem to move so fast. The stories with names such as "The Summers Before Air," or "Dogs Are a Better Class of People" should make you wonder what this man considers important. I highly recommend this book. You will be glad you bought it. These stories will make you feel good, especially on a rainy day. It also makes a great gift for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.Dogs That Point, Fish That Bite: Outdoor Essays (Chapel Hill Books) Overview

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Official Game Guide for PC and Xbox 360 ReviewFor once, Prima's Oblivion guide is actually worth buying. With full walkthroughs of almost every quest, detailed explanations of skills and skill stacking, map locations, and a bunch of miscellaneous information that can conceivably save hundreds of hours of gameplay it's obviously been extraordinarly well-researched and gives anyone who buys it a leg up. 5 stars for both the guide and the value proposition.
Prima's guides have gone dramatically downhill in recent years. Some of it isn't their fault as their testing often gets crammed by publishers rushing out gold titles that are really beta versions, but often the reviewers just seem harried to write the guide in a week so to get it out in time for the release and aren't exploring in depth the way those who buy the guides do. (Read my reviews of several of their useless MMORPG guides as to how bad they've gotten.) Almost always, online help guides are both far more comprehensive and a far better value.
This one is different. Part of it is that the game itself is structured ideally for a guide like this, with extremely limited ingame linearity and direction, and basically no discussion of skill mechanics. Any guide would help. But this actually is magnificently researched (likely thanks to the long delay Bethesda had in launching Oblivion) and when the manual starts with character building and skill discussions at levels that would take months of experimenting by players to figure out, you know you're in good shape. As you'd expect, another key element is walkthroughs of what looks to be every quest in the game, but what makes this outstanding is that the reviewer actually took the time to figure out what happens if you do a particular quest when a particular NPC is dead or if you've done another quest that might conflict with the first - critical for non-linear play. Everything else you'd expect from a top quality guide (maps with detailed locations, treasure drops, and mechanics) is there. Only thing missing is a vendor list and indexing of more than a couple pages worth of topics, but for something this comprehensive it's a minor oversight.
For once, well done Prima. More kudos on the value proposition. Given how heavily Amazon has this discounted, it's probably worth buying this and the non-collector's edition rather than the collector's edition by itself - you'll get a slug more help and gameplay will speed up dramatically for basically the same price. Expect this guide to be dogeared in a month.Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Official Game Guide for PC and Xbox 360 Overview

Painless Science Projects (Barron's Painless Series) ReviewThis is the science project book we wish we had found first. It is not a list of project ideas, like other books. Instead, it is a very practical guide to doing a science project. How to break a big idea down into a managable project. How the parents can be sure to let the student do the work and benefit from the experience. Full of good tips, warnings of impending mistakes, and a very good reference on what a science project is all about. I'm also sure that science teachers would be impressed with its informative and guiding style and could easily make use of the book as a student reference for any project.Painless Science Projects (Barron's Painless Series) Overview

The A.T. Guide ReviewI'm a section hiker of the AT. I recently met a thru hiker on the trail who was using this guide. It has a nice way of graphically showing the elevations. It also shows the mileages for the next 3 shelters from each shelter showing both northbound and southbound. It shows all the parking places along the trail. That is particularly good info for us section hikers. I've had trouble finding that info in other AT guides. It has schematics of most of the towns close to the trail highlighting the eating and lodging places. It even has info on some of the people who offer shuttle service along the trail. I'm very pleased with my purchase. The A.T. Guide Overview

Native Waters: A Few Moments In A Small Wooden Boat ReviewThis book arrived at my home with Tuesday's mail. By Wednesday's early hours, I had reached page 100, unable to set "Native Waters" down. Roger Stouff has a way of expressing those hidden thoughts and feelings in a manner in which few authors can, feelings that many of us never knew were there.
The writing in this book is writing you feel. Ghosts are everywhere. Self-examination is prevalent and insightful. Writing this honest, this poignant can only be uplifting and rewarding if only because you, the reader, must turn some small bit of light toward your own truths, examine your own roots and beginnings. For myself, I won't be finished with this book until I've read it over and over, across several seasons, maybe through many years. There is a prized spot reserved on my "favorite books" shelf for this novel, books I return to over and over, year after year. (Some other authors on this shelf are J. Conrad, E. Hemingway, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald, Dickens, Dumas, Twain, and Stevenson, just to mention a few) I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
