A Voice of Thunder: A BLACK SOLDIER'S CIVIL WAR (Blacks in the New World) ReviewMost books and reports on Civil War events come from white writers and voice white viewpoints. This one speaks with a black voice, as George E. Stephens wrote as correspondent for the (New York) "Weekly Anglo-African," from the events of John Brown's rebellion (Nov. 1859) through September, 1864. Along the way he shifted from member of the press to acting patriot-soldier, recruiting and then enlisting in the Massachusetts 54th, that leader among black regiments depicted in the movie "Glory." Donald Yacovone provides not only notes for the letters but also information on Stephens' family background. After the 54th disbanded Yacovone follows Stephens' ongoing struggles to educate freed slaves in Virginia; the story of many black patriots' efforts to move their people upward by finally granting them some education is not widely told or appreciated. These chapters fill a need today. So the life taken as a whole is both glorious and tragic: it's distressing to follow Stephens' hopes, from fresh optimism through disillusionment to despair, time and time again from the events of Fort Wagner to the last anguished efforts of his life. At its end he had to sue the government he'd served all his life to obtain the commission denied to him because of his race (though illegally), and provide for his wife with a higher pension. He never lived to receive it, dying in 1888 before the promotion came through.In this Stephens is typical of black men of his time, and it's deeply saddening.This is not a happy, but it is a useful, book, and a corrective for many cheap heroics about how well we treated our black veterans. Confederate Money ReviewThis book is great!! It accurately tracks much of the war. The adventure brings this time period alive and answers many questions about how the war actual ended for the South in Florida. The decline in the value of Confederate money, The benevelance of the people of the time, and the tendency to do good in hard times are central themes of the book. One is caught up in the adventure to the point that it is hard to put the book down. The battles at Shiloh Church, Chicamauga, and Olustee receive excellent coverage. However, the best parts to me were rescue of some white slaves that Sherman sent north, and the daring raid on the Confederate treasury as the war ended and the treasury was being divided in Archer Florida. Thunder on the River: The Civil War in Northeast Florida ReviewDaneil L. Schafer wrote a rarity in today's history field - an engaging, readable, yet scholarly book on a topic that has not been well covered in the Civil War field. I can add little that hasn't been said in the previous reviews, but will state that the breadth and scope of research combined many sources, from the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion to hard-to-find contemporary journals, diaries, and accounts, is quite impressive. I did find a bias toward the Unionist perspective with a focus on emancipation of African Americans, Union troop movements and actions, and a little less on the Confederate or southern perspective. This does not detract from the presentation of information, and I found myself learning even more about a topic that I had a good foundation on to begin with. Those who want only the southern perspective will not appreciate this book, but those who want to learn or increase their knowledge of the Civil War in northeast Florida should have this book on their shelves as required reading.Thunder on the River: The Civil War in Northeast Florida Overview

Failure in the Saddle: Nathan Bedford Forrest, Joe Wheeler, and the Confederate Cavalry in the Chickamauga Campaign Review"Would you like to go on a battlefield walk in Chickamauga?" Answering "yes" to this question introduced the author to me. Each year, I spend a weekend in March following him from site to site marveling at his knowledge of the Chickamauga Campaign. If you are listing experts, David Powell will be very high on the list.
The book opens with a look at the leaders of Bragg's cavalry from Corps to Brigade, starting with Joe Wheeler and Nathan Forrest and the strained relationship between these men, Wheeler a West Pointer and Bragg supporter just is not a fighter like Forrest. Following is a detailed look at Bragg's Cavalry, training, discipline, accomplishments and failures.
With this foundation, we quickly cover Tullahoma. Coverage of the Union movement from Chattanooga gives us an understanding of Bragg's problems and the challenge of determining their route. Done in a straightforward manner this section makes clear complex issues and the importance of cavalry to a Civil War army. Using his knowledge, experience and considerable ability, David shows us the cavalry's influence on the campaign and actions during battle. The reader sees cavalry theory as practiced by the Army of Tennessee in 1863, a story of personalities, ambition and management going awry at a critical time.
The heart of the book is a detailed look at CSA Cavalry operations leading up to, during and after the Battle of Chickamauga. This is not a pretty picture, showing how little good information Bragg had. Both Wheeler and Forrest fail, for different reasons, to provide realistic timely information. Wheeler, often disobedient, consistently is out of position or making bad decisions. Forrest suffers from being a new Corps commander having a Division or Brigade commander mentality. This is the first detailed look at the pursuit of the Army of the Cumberland I have read creating questions about accounts written after the fact. The author looks at what is said and done at the time not what people remember.
The book ends with an appraisal of the Confederate Cavalry and how historians evaluate the campaign. While a major victory, Chickamauga did little for the Confederate cause in the West. This book explains why this victory was more luck than anything was.
The book is fully footnoted with a full Bibliography and index. Fifteen full-page maps keep the reader positioned. A fully illustrated driving tour with 31 stops complements the text. Appendix 4 looks at the Forrest-Bragg confrontation, tracing the roots of the story and taking a historical look at it.
The author has a clear style that is easy to read and very informative. Savas Beatie is a top shelf publisher dedicated to producing high-quality histories. David Powell and Savas Beatie result in a must have book for anyone interested in Chickamauga, the Army of Tennessee, N.B. Forrest, cavalry operations or just wanting a good read.

He includes countless examples, both good and bad, of encounters between Yankee soldiers and the people of Georgia. If you want to know more about the personal side of the March, as well as the dates and places, this is certainly the book for you.
A teacher could easily use "To the Sea" as a text for a course in the March alone. The margins are wide to provide plenty of room to write notes. Thank you Jim Miles!!
