Historical Atlas Of Native Americans ReviewI had high hopes for this large reference work, especially for its many full and double-paged brightly colored computer-generated maps. This book may find a place on a coffee table but not on the serious scholar's reference shelf. Why? Because the information is inaccurate and unreliable. For example, pages 342-357 contain clear and brightly colored maps identifying the locations of North American Indian groups in the USA and Canada. The keys to the US maps indicate that "federally recognized tribes" are marked by a yellow feather while "non-federally recognized tribes" are marked by a dark feather. In fact, the key should indicate the reverse--non-federally recognized tribes by a yellow feather and the federally recognized tribes by a dark feather. I don't know who did the editing but this serious error should have been discovered and corrected. It is bad enough that so many North Americans remain ignorant about their Native neighbors but errors of this magnitude not only confirm but perpetuate such ignorance. It is difficult to trust any of the information in this book after finding this egregious error in my first 20 minute encounter with the book. The publishing company seems to have been more interested in the aesthetics than the accuracy of its content. I will return my copy to the bookstore it came from and the publisher would do well to recall every volume printed. (It should at the very least include an errata page with every volume sold.)
