The Birdcatcher ReviewThe author of this book maintains a website supporting the shy, solitary, autistic person who has experienced pain trying to fit in our socially complex world. He maintains that such a person retains the genes of those small groups of hunter-gathering families existing over 40,000 years ago. [...]
This novel is told in the first person by Christoper, an insurance adjuster. The industry rings of an impersonal, cruel, and economically expedient money-making machine. The clients, attempting to obtain assistance for their broken bodies and spirits, must encounter a system which betrays them. They encounter deceit and corruption complicating their already existing difficulties.
Christopher marries, has two children, and hopes to escape the pain of his childhood where he is rejected by those who consider him as "an outsider--a person who doesn't quite fit-in." While he finds love in his relationship with two children, he must confront the inevitability of marital breakdown. Marriage is not always well suited to the person struggling with its complex social demands. Friendship and romance are also different from that of the extrovert.
Throughout the book, Christoper comes to terms with his solitary nature. He does not want to change. Told that he "lives in his own little world," he increasingly embraces his many passions--one being the love of silence and nature's beauty. He offers hope to those of us who have always been placed in a diagnostic category because of our quiet, solitary make-up. We can feel a burst of freedom in daring to recognize that we have intrinsic value because of who we are and would ever hope to be.
For me, this story opened up a world where I could feel welcomed. The Birdcatcher Overview
