New York City (Step by Step) ReviewWhat a shame to see that the publisher decided to follow the lead of other leading travel guides by trying to incorporate "all things" to "all people" in this newest (7th edition) guide. By doing so, it has lost it's previous uniqueness as a magna cum laude example of superb photography and biting commentaries. By trying to pack a ton of travel information into a smaller format with postage size photographs and heavily edited narrative pieces this edition is moving into the same look and editorial direction as full color Fodor, DK, and many other guides are doing, resulting in a heavier but not as useful travel aid as exists with the more specialized city guides on the market. You're better off getting an earlier Insight edition (5th edition or earlier) at less than $0.50 and avail yourself to all the wonderful writing and photos that preexist this current edition.

But if you are in need of a more timely and comprehensive travel info, then I would refer you to "Time Out" city guides which are published annually and have the most detailed information for it's size. An even more compact but tremendously useful (but neighborhood oriented) guide is "NFT". Both Time Out and NFT even have their own nifty iPhone apps to complement their books!
As for the best overall one volume travel city guide, you can't beat Frommers with the best editorial commentaries on virtually every aspect of travel sights & places on NYC. Same can be said for the Rough Guides. I know this because I own and have used over 35 different travel guides just on New York City alone.New York City (Step by Step) Overview
