Born on a Buzzard's Stump: The Epic Saga of a Man and his Myth ReviewOn casual examination this work could be see as a somewhat self-aggrandizing series of adventure stories by a man of modest origin from within the distinctive but fading culture of east coast North Carolina watermen. Read deeper. This is a complex mixture. It is epic in its focus and dedication to a central theme pursued for a noble purpose - the fullfilment of a promise to a loving father. There is "hero myth" in this story in that the hero left home with an objective, faced formidable challenges and dangers, and returned home vindicated in his purpose. Conspicuously and somewhat a distraction to other aspects of the story, there is an element of "jokester myth" in the story. The author did not proceed directly to his objective but was frequently distracted by the pursuit of pleasure and adventure, and it was usually on these diversions that "stuff" happened. He often disregarded conventional boundaries and established authority, sometimes the letter of the law. He had his own code based on a morality of take what you need but waste not. His stories of his time in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War illustrate the incredibly difficult and dangerous duties that service performs for those of us unaware. His professional zenith was the attainment of a Ph. D. degree and completion of a productive career in teaching and research, retiring as a full Professor. I suspect he was not a creature of board rooms, faculty meetings and social formalities. He would have been happiest and truest to himself on a commercial fishing vessel or mucking through a swamp or marsh with a shotgun or a sack of steel traps. The world of the author's youth is gone. But, from that origin he lived a life that exemplified courage, persistence, hard work, productivity and a spirited pursuit of adventure. He has a lot to teach. His "Daddy" would be very proud.
