Blossom ReviewAs with all of Merritt's works, Blossom engages from start to finish. Merritt is a master at creating and sustaining rich relationships between people and their environments. His evocations of place, in Blossom as in his other exceptional novels, are rendered with both exquisite grace and raw focus. Blossom's protagonist, David Early, is complex and finely wrought. Both like-able and hate-able, he's a man with flaws and goals and fears that develop (blossom!) through the course of the novel. Early's relationships are beautifully executed and described, and Merritt consistently writes fine, sensual scenes that drive his plots and fuel the emotional intensity of this novel and all of his others.
Early's involvement with the Civil Rights Movement elicits conflict not only between his parents, but also throughout the members of his town. Merritt does a fine job of illustrating these violent tensions, which course with both fear and excitement. Historically accurate, emotionally rendered and, as with all of Merritt's works, finely written, Blossom engages from start to finish. Merritt is a writer who strives for literary quality, beauty really, at the sentence level, and that focus comes through on every pulsing page of Blossom. The novel left me shaking and weeping; thanks, Don Merritt, for another beautiful novel.Blossom Overview
