Historic Photos of Boston ReviewThere are coffeetable books that you rarely open - and then there are books that you go through again and again, sharing them with friends. Historic Photos of Boston is definitely a book that is great to enjoy and share.
The large format lets you really appreciate the detail in these photos. There is a wide range of images, from Paul Revere's home to Boston Celtic games, from immigrant neighborhoods to horse-and-carriage images. Organized by date, you can really see how much the city changes over time - and also how much it remains the same. Many of the buildings and streets visible in the earliest images still exist.
It is fascinating to see how the outfits change, how the horse carts change to early cars - but how the people themselves are always touching and immediate. You can sense the pleasure in the boy's enjoyment of his 5 cent hot dog. You see the pleasure in the couple's eyes as they stroll down the cobblestone path.
Boston casts a spell on many who visit it. The streets have seen it all - revolution, riots, strikes, even a molasses flood. You can walk down the same streets that many famous people traversed, hundreds of years ago. As they say, if only the walls of those centuries-old buildings could talk. With these photos, you do get a glimpse into the time of the past. A group of boys sitting on a fence could be modern kids, enjoying an afternoon in the sun. You wonder, looking at the old image, if those "kids" are grandparents now.
The captions that go with the photos really help to give you a sense of what was going on during that era.
