Dogfish Memory: Sailing in Search of Old Maine ReviewThe writer is lyrical. I'll grant that as the one positive I found in this mess of a personal history and memoir of fishing and sailing the Maine coast. I don't recommend it as either an autobiography or for information about boating or Maine.
What stands out most for me is the sense of his cold heart, especially as it turns to the women in his life. He objectifies them almost to the person, this multitude of "Linda Janes" - his woman of the moment - usually married, often to an alcoholic (those seem to be his speciality areas). As he says early on in one of the first mentions of a Linda Jane: "And there must have been a woman involved in all of it - Linda Jane - and it hardly mattered who this woman was or what our future was together." Or in closing, "Yet I never grew into that second future I imagined, just into that peculiar indifference of one who walks in the field frost or along a cobblestone shore. I say now nothing is crucial or of consequence, whether Linda Jane laughs in the arms of a lover or waits on the wharf for me with her heart all aflutter." Huh? Don't read this for messages from a life well lived I guess.
So we drift from Linda Jane to Linda Jane with no indication that Dane had genuine feeling for any of them. Or for anyone else in his life for that matter. From the beginning of the book he seemed so disinterested that I kept track - he mentions some people loving him but no real indication that he reciprocated. A lot of people die along the way as relatives and lovers tend to do over decades, but there's no sense that their deaths are mourned.
The sailing and fishing stories are vague and salted with his annoying - too cool for school - self-conscious approach of always letting us know he's "playing Maine." Seems to me this guy is playing life. The book left me cold.Dogfish Memory: Sailing in Search of Old Maine Overview
