Exploring Florida's Botanical Wonders: A Guide to Ancient Trees, Unique Flora, and Wildflower Walks (Wild Florida) ReviewThis book on the botanical treasures of Florida is an excellent antidote for those of us who picture our southernmost state (on the North American Continent), as a land of alligators, hurricanes, Disneyworld, and retirement communities. The only other book on Florida's botany that I had previously read was The Orchid Thief: A True Story of Beauty and Obsession (Ballantine Reader's Circle) by Susan Orlean, which focused on the family Orchidaceae.
Orchids also abound in "Exploring Florida's Botanical Wonders" and the reader is urged to take "an interpretive stroll through the streets of Key West with the Orchid Lady..." The author also describes her own search for the elusive ghost orchid (Dendrophylax lindenii) through the wilds of the Fakahatchee Strand, where "Navigation is tactile. You feel the bottom of the swamp with your feet."
Instead of merely listing spectacular botanical sites, the author sometimes records her own adventures in Florida's 81 distinct biological communities, rather in the style of Edwin Way Teale's four-volume pilgrimage through the AMERICAN SEASONS VOLUMES 1 to 4 A Naturalist's Record of a 20,000-Mile Journey Through the North American Winter Spring Summer Autumn.
