The strengths of this book lie in its collection of hundreds of vintage photographs of the era outlined, stretching all the way back to the Twenties. Whatever text is to be found is only in the captions - that's all. There isn't much of a narrative or a historic context lent to shagging found in the caption of these photos. Were the beach scenesters rich? Working class? Complying with segregation or resisting it? Seen as rebels and hooligans or good kids having a good time? What of the bands playing the scene - was there a living to be made? National success or regional heroes? Caption reading makes it hard to tell. Folks with nostalgia for the Carolinas' beach scene, however, will find these photos to be real treasures, well worth the purchase price.
